Yayyy I got accepted to Arts & Science as an international student! Is this real?! Did I get into an Ivy League school?
Stats: 35 ACT (35E/36M/34R/36S), 97% GPA, a few good ECs and leadership opportunities
Congrats to everyone, regardless of the result! I’m sure everyone’s going to go on and do amazing things
@Daisy0114 Thanks again for all your insight on this thread - I meant that during my freshman year at whatever college I’m at Cornell would still be picking my classes if I was even considering transferring because of how heavy the freshman year credit requirements are (which make sense if they’re trying not to hold you back)

Congratulations to all those you were accepted! And sympathies to all those rejected. You will get into a great school.regardless. The answer to many of your questions is that admission to the top tier schools is often about convincing one person to put your file into the admitted pile. I was affiliated with a top tier school for 7 years and can tell you that what is stressed above all is a narrative, a story. That is why the essay is SO IMPORTANT. It is your only chance to express to that human on the other end YOUR STORY. And there are many stories. All the things commonly mentioned here (ACT/SAT, GPA SSAT,ECA SPORTS) are terrific accomplishments but they are all about you JOINING the group and not separating yourself from it What makes you unique? What makes you quirky? There are 36,000 high school valedictorians graduating from US secondary schools each year. Add to that another 36,000 salutatorians. There are just over 14,000 spots for all IVIES each year. Add stanford, MIT and a few other schools and lets say 20,000 top tier students. And if all they did was take number 1 and 2’s they could only take 1 out of 3.5 And that doesn’t factor in international students. Do the math. Again, most everyone here will wind up in a great school, even if its not your dream school. Make the most of it.
What about the January admission thing (around 60 get it apparently) for CAS and CALS
Yes, he showed interest. We are somewhat local and have visited the campus a ton of times. My older son got in three years ago so we are up there a lot. We are baffled. Yeah, I get the admit rate dropped and I get it is an ivy but this kid’s record is as good as his brother’s was and he didn’t even get waitlisted! He is the valedictorian of his class and the #2 kid got accepted. His resume is stronger in almost every way possible except one. She has a sister with autism and volunteers with special Olympics. My son only volunteered at the soup kitchen, various cancer charity events, the local hospital and a basketball camp he created for local underprivileged kids. He applied to CALs and, as a state resident, should have been even that more attractive to Cornell. We are beyond baffled.
@JigglyPuffs123 , my son got offered Jan admission to study info sci and technology in CALS. He is delighted. He’ll probably take some Cals distribution requirements at a local college over the summer and fall so he can graduate in May of 2022 with everyone else
I thought my son’s essay was unique, interesting and showed a very human side of him. Maybe it was too unique. Like I said above, we are beyond baffled.
I can assure you that the process is very much one of chance, although a “committee” makes the decision it is more or less up to the person responsible for your sons application. As far as NYS resident goes, i can only tell you that the Ivies and other top tiers are looking for geographical and economic diversity. Does a valedictorian from Mississippi have a better chance than one from Westchester County? Yes all other things being equal. Does an applicant living in a mobile home community with a single mom have a better chance than someone living in a Mcmansion? Yes, if they make their disadvantage part of the story and tell that story effectively
@Daisy0114 wait i got waitlisted and it asked me if i wanted to be considered for the january thing. is that what your son got or is he already in?
Did any of you get a letter if you were accepted if you couldn’t get into portal?
