Our college kid is enjoying a beach trip over Spring Break with TONS of others from her university. They might be having fun, but have spent much of today worried about what will happen. Will their school follow the move of many to on-line learning? Will they be able to access the items in their dorm rooms? So many unanswered questions.
@adlgel I’m a little worried about that too. Today my son was on his Zoom video conference at the same time my wife was on a Microsoft Teams video conference. Worked well, but not sure what happens when many more families are doing the same.
@Sue22 , Thank you for this thread.
BATES: I called Bates this afternoon and spoke with Dean of Student Affairs. She said commencement isn’t yet officially cancelled. I suspect it will be though.
SUNY/CUNY: All SUNY and CUNY schools will go to digital learning as of 3/19, while apparently keeping campus open, including residential halls. That makes no sense to me. I am betting that will change too.
@Rivet2000 my husband said the same thing. What’s going to happen when everyone is at home and trying to use WiFi? Dh’s company is telling everyone to work remotely, and while neither of my college kids have yet gotten word that classes will go online, I’m sure it’s coming. And then i have two high schoolers whose schools also are planning on remote teaching. It’s going to be interesting to see if I have enough bandwidth to support all this. It’s probably a good idea for me to look into paying for faster speed.
Let’s get a master list together. Add your school in alphabetical order with the latest info. and add a link to official sources if possible. Edit any older entries as needed. Let’s try to keep it to school closings and remote learning announcements. @MWolf
How wonderful of you to open up your house for your D’s friend.
If the school decides to vacate the campus, we will just send her back to Seattle.
I don’t want to burden other families in this time of uncertainty.
Her grandma is in Florida and she will be happy to have her beloved granddaughter but she is 84. I don’t know if a retirement community should have a new person from NYC.
The Force Majeure clause which is in every college contract allows them to suspend or terminate service when certain circumstances beyond their control arise, making in-person instruction impossible or unsafe. I don’t believe there will be a discount for online instruction. My DS is a freshman currently pledging a fraternity and the pledges are paying half the semester dues, but that saving is rounding relative to full tuition.
So how will the schools be handling the finances for closing the rest of the semester ?
Room and Board ?
Food ?
Activity Fees?
Online learning discount ?

My company is doing dry runs this week to have each of our offices work from home to ensure that our VPN infrastructure can support that full remote workforce load in the event we need to ask employees to work from home. However, this will NOT address the individual ISP bandwidth in each employee’s home if that employee has multiple people streaming video, etc.

Boston College. Students need to leave campus by Sunday. Online instruction begins next week.
I’m sure they are going to disinfect the entire campus as a protocol. That’s why I think it’s good that the rooms are being emptied.
Such disappointment. Spring term.
For the greater good.
Actually Laurentian just did. They had attendees at a large mining conference held recently in Toronto where one of the attendees just tested positive. I have a nephew there and I spoke to my BIL who’s indicated that though classes are going online they aren’t sending the students home.
It will be interesting to see if other schools follow suit. At DS18’s school there are no cases but a doctor at a local hospital just tested positive and they have nursing students and student volunteers who have placements there. I have my fingers crossed that they can hold off for the 3 more weeks it will take to get to the end of the semester.

My daughter’s school is closing for a week so they can set up online classes.
A program she planned was canceled… Agh…
She is bringing home some international friends that would be otherwise stranded. Then they go back to school and continue classes unless things change. She graduates this year so hope they have graduation on May ?.
My son at Michigan is holding tight for now. His conference was canceled but they are working on having it virtually.
Grand Valley is going virtual.
Maybe the list should start being schools that are “not” closed yet… Lol…
Cornell going all online after Spring Break, starting with classes April 6. Students can stay on campus by petition, otherwise are strongly encouraged to go home for Spring Break March 28 and stay home. No decision on Commencement yet.
Professors encouraged to start online instruction immediately. At least one class tried it today and it did not go well. Frustration on both the part of the professor and the students who were trying to attend online and not in person. So it’s good they are taking a couple weeks to work out the kinks.

Dh works in banking and one of the problems they’ve run into as part of their contingency planning is that they don’t have enough laptops for all the employees to work remotely and they can’t get them. There are none to be had. Now they how to figure out how to mitigate the risk of letting people use their personal home computers for work purposes.
