“adding University of Michigan…”

UMich nursing students to stay and complete clinicals.

Emory extending Spring break until March 22 then transitioning to online learning.

My son has to go back to school (currently on Spring break) to pack up his room, then fly back home.

In a sign of how well technology is going to work for the next three months:

Williams sent all students a notice that, due to a technological glitch, none of the requests to stay on campus were actually submitted, so all students should resubmit their requests starting from scratch.

Online learning is going to be a mess.

Roanoke College in VA going online until April 6th as of now.

I’m guessing in 48 hours it will be easier to make a list of everywhere still having classes as normal. My guess is it will be a very short list.

My D said several of her professors invited students to attend in-person when the on-line classes are being recorded.

Kind of defeats the purpose…

Stanford University confirms two more cases of coronavirus

Stanford University, in California’s Santa Clara County, has confirmed two new cases of the coronavirus – one from Stanford Medicine and another case from the main campus.

A faculty member of Stanford Medicine was also confirmed with a case of coronavirus last week, bringing the university’s total to three cases, Stanford said in a letter to its community.

Stanford and health officials are now working to conduct contact tracing on the patients. The letter added that the university would not provide additional information on the patients to protect their privacy.

Stanford is holding online classes: The university canceled all in-person classes for the final two weeks of its winter quarter, and will continue with online classes during the spring quarter.

Stanford is also asking students who live on campus to leave at the end of the quarter if possible.

This comes as a wave of universities across the nation enact similar measures. Harvard University, for instance, gave students five days to move out of their dorms – sparking panic and anger among some students, who complained of inadequate administration support. (CNN)

[ and this is why colleges closing down isn’t a bad idea. It’s not a good place to quarantine everyone ]

Laurentian University on Ontario became the first Canadian university to go remote.

EDIT: That was posted earlrer.

Dear Wake Forest Community,

I write today with important information for the Wake Forest community. Let me begin by saying how deeply grateful I am for all the dedicated professionals in our community who, in recent days, have worked diligently to enable the University to respond to the current COVID-19 situation. In these efforts, our first priority has been to safeguard the health of the Wake Forest community and our neighbors, even as we sustain our vital educational mission. In coming days, the disruptions caused by this situation will demand much from all of us.

Throughout the past week, we have continued to monitor the spread of COVID-19, particularly in North Carolina. We have been in regular contact with peer institutions, many of whom are moving to remote delivery of class instruction, to share plans and best practices. After extensive consultation with public health officials, we have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interest for our campus community, local Winston-Salem community and the broader community, that we take measures to help contain and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Therefore, we have decided to suspend all in-person classes, both in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, until further notice. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates.

Classes are cancelled from Monday, March 16, through Sunday, March 22, so that faculty and staff can plan for academic continuity and prepare for remote delivery of course instruction.
Classes will resume remotely on Monday, March 23. Students should expect to hear directly from their respective professors and/or degree program leaders soon about how to prepare for class. It is unknown at this time when classes will return to an in-person format.
Students should not return to campus if at all possible. All undergraduate residential students must register their plans with the Office of Residence Life and Housing at go.wfu.edu/housingportal by Friday, March 13. Housing will be made available for students with appropriate circumstances.
Campus will remain open. Deans will provide additional information and guidance to support remote course delivery and continuity of needed student services. Staff should consult with their supervisors about specific expectations and resources to complete job assignments if remote work is needed due to health concerns.
With such a significant disruption to studies, research and work, we know there are many questions and concerns. More information is available on The Wake Forest University COVID-19 website. This situation is changing rapidly, and we will continue to communicate as the situation changes and decisions are made.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the continued support of Wake Forest staff working to sustain our community, especially our front-line staff serving in health care, custodial, law enforcement, security, housing and food service roles.

The safety and wellbeing of our Wake Forest community remains our first priority. I am grateful for your patience, cooperation and flexibility.

Sincerely,

Nathan O. Hatch
President

Moving to online classes and closing dorms

Purdue just cancelled all admissions events through May 2. They aren’t doing tours.

Wake Forest - it isn’t clear / doesn’t say in the President’s letter, but does say on their website that students are permitted to return to their dorms to get personal items and then vacate. Must be out by Tuesday, 3/17 unless you have approval to stay on campus ( I assume very limited circumstances - perhaps international students from highly affected areas)

It doesn’t say they have to move their stuff out. However, I think it makes sense to do so in the event remote learning remains in effect for the balance of the semester (which I suspect it will). Don’t want to have to come back later just to move your stuff out (if they even allow you to).

Here is a good list of colleges closing and those still open for tours. At least for now…

Vassar is currently on Spring Break until the 22nd. Just announced online learning until 4/10 with a re-evaluation on 4/6 as to whether or not kids can return. The kids are expected to delay their return to campus if at all possible.

@TheGreyKing , I hear ya! Yes, Bates is also going to struggle with digital learning, as will most LACs. Williams is a top school, and I am sure they will manage it the best they can.

Yesterday I felt sick and sad and enraged. Today I’m still pissed off, but at least we have roofs over our heads, running water, food. We are so much more fortunate than so many others. It’s still okay to be pissed though. ?

Just got an email from UNH saying classes will resume Monday, March 23rd (spring break is next week). They are requiring students in certain risk groups (mostly travel related) to self quarantine for 2 weeks.

Vassar:
Therefore, effective March 23 through April 10, Vassar will move all classes online for distance learning, and where possible, employees will be able to work remotely. These efforts are being taken with the goal of reducing the probability of spreading COVID-19 on campus. After this three-week period, we hope to return to regular classroom-based learning again; however, we cannot predict the path of the pandemic, and we will reevaluate this decision by April 6.

@Lindagaf Same here. I’m so sad. Bowdoin just had a town hall with the president and he also looks so sad and flat out said that the staff is feeling all of the feelings that the kids and parents are feeling. I’m slowly coming around to reality. Plus, we need to figure out the logistics of getting S19’s stuff home. Luckily, he has good friends who are going to pack him up. He’s going to choose what he needs for summer and we will reimburse them to send those home.

Bowdoin is also offering to help with staff ready to do kids’ packing if necessary. The college will keep kids’ stuff packed up on campus until the end of the school year and we can come out to get everything “later”. They just don’t know that date yet. There’s a possibility they would even keep the stuff over the summer for them.

This just happened so fast. It’s going to take some time to fully accept it.
