Coronavirus and US Campus issues

@homerdog Yes, they can go back later. We are only an hour and a half drive from school, so not a big deal for us, but many kids are from OOS. College has still not accepted that in-person is done for the year.

@homerdog We got home around 6 pm from Boston College. Twins, rented minivan, packed with everything from their dorm room. TV, garbage cans, posters, nothing left in their room. Maybe if a school was on Spring Break but they had just started back this past Monday.

@Twoin18 , I just read your excellent post from page 19. Part of me things this is way over-hyped, but bigger part of me understands why this is such an urgent situation.

For anyone doubting why there is so much hysteria, just google the article by Italian doctors. They are literally having to choose who lives and who dies.

I, too, initially thought this was way overhyped. But I’ve learned more, along with everyone else. This isn’t just about the elderly. It’s about my 52 year old sister who has one lung due to a pulmonary embolism. It’s about her kids with asthma. It’s about the immunocompromised. It’s about diabetics. It’s about those two perfectly healthy and young female Chinese doctors who both got it, one of whom died. And it’s about all the millions of others who also need medical treatment.

This is a historic event. Most of us will get through it. It’s going to suck. We ALL need to do all in our power to stop this, or at least slow it, as much as possible.

Yes!!! We also have to help ourselves, help our family and neighbors (sometimes that will mean staying away or leaving a need at the door). We can not expect our government to take care of this. We have to take care to do the right thing. Stay home!

Some reports suggest that similar rationing of care for the most critical patients is now necessary in Seattle, with access to ECMO machines (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which oxygenates blood when the patient’s lungs won’t work) not being allowed for any patients who are over 40 yrs old, have another organ system failing or have a BMI (body mass index) of over 25.

However, I’m seeing other reports that doctors are denying this is the case, albeit with the qualifier “yet”. I’ve found Nicholas Christakis at Yale to be posting some of the most useful historical comparisons and analyses on his Twitter feed. He is comparing this to the 1957 influenza pandemic (which was somewhat less deadly than 1918).

IMO that level of care is always limited. Ecmo is highly specialized care, it isn’t even like it would be standard in all ICUs. You won’t have many ICU staff to run it. You are sold a story of unlimited care in the US that simply never existed.

Temple U has confirmed that a student who travelled to Spain during spring break has tested positive for COVID 19.

Unfortunately, TU waited until this past Weds. to make the switch to online classes. Students were on break the previous week, and resumed classes as usual this past Monday…

Of course, I was reading posts here on CC during break week about the many other Unis closing campuses and asking students not to return to campus after spring break. I was dismayed that TU was not doing the same, with 30,000 undegraduate students! A critical opportunity to “flatten the curve” and help protect lives was squandered.

One of my D’s roommates also spent spring break in Spain…

Ohio State announced they’ll be prorating a refund for room & board for the remainder of the semester.

Purdue just announced they will have distance learning for the remainder of the semester and only international students who can’t go home are to stay on campus. My D is going to be so upset. Housing is supposed to send details tomorrow. So sad :frowning:

Add USC (So Cal) to the list of schools that have gone remote for the remainder of the semester, as announced by university president today. More info on coordinated move-outs to follow.

@momofsenior1. Right there with ya . Right now my son is good but they kinda want anyone off campus that can. He will most likely get more done staying put but we think they will change this policy soon… Sorta everything seems to be going that way… Agh
.

S moved out of his dorm at American on Sunday. Today the administration sent out an email that a student returning to campus sometime last week from another US city tested positive and is currently in isolation in a dorm room . Students and parents are still moving out through 3/23 and some are concerned they could be exposed.

Kenyon College is closing for the rest of the semester now. Details like reimbursement, getting stuff from dorms, and Commencement haven’t been hashed out yet. I’m just so sad for these kids!

We have until Sunday to move him out. Dh is swamped at work, so won’t be able to leave until late afternoon friday to drive the 7-8 hrs to school. They’re scheduled for a 3 hr window Saturday morning to move him out. Still no idea what he’s supposed to do about the microfridge we rented!

UGA moved to online for rest of semester.

Are traditional residential students living in off campus housing (i.e. not forced out by dorm closures) mostly staying there or moving back to their parents’ places?

@ucbalumnus. My son at Michigan is staying in his campus apartment with his roommate. They are locked and loaded ?. We will see if things change this weekend. I might go up to start the move or make the second move easier.

So my son had his first virtual class on Michigan’s version of Zoom and said it was a “Sxxt show” (you may make your own word ?).

He said the Professor asked a question and then… Complete silence… Lol… Maybe everyone’s mic was on mute. Then his connection was not good etc.

He has a test tomorrow like a final and same normal time like 80 minutes but he has some extra forms to fill out also. If things don’t go well he thinks he can walk over to take it live in the computer room…

He had some internship interviews so at least that went well.

He seems happy and content. My wife thinks the borders will close from the states or something but don’t think that will happen. He’s also only 30 - 40 minutes away from family ( not us), if something really happened.

Daughter and friend come to our house tomorrow and I think she wants to start moving out. She has subletters (so do her 2 other roommates) so she can finish up here and then go back for graduation in May… They better have kids at least walk down to get their diploma… Not sure how they can do that virtually but maybe they can.

UCLA now has a confirmed case (staff member). My DS is home since Thursday (OOS) when they announced that they would like students to return home, but be allowing students back by mid April when classes were to resume. and therefore he still has items left in his dorm. We have been in touch with UCLA but they still haven’t figured out how to handle this situation. Really do not want to be paying for a full quarter of housing/food just because there are still items in his room!
