Coronavirus and US Campus issues

CU sent a second letter today saying all who can move out should move out now. Mostly freshmen live in dorms and others live in apts and houses surrounding campus.

To encourage this moving out, they’ve closed the rec center and are trying to close labs (non-essential) and other spaces. Many businesses are closing (in denver all public facilities and bars and restaurants for EIGHT weeks), but 3/4 of the students have leases for their apts and things won’t be any better at home.

I think it changes so fast that people THINK they are going back for graduations and to finish the semester but those plans may change too. My friend’s son is home for spring break and thinks he’s going back to a SUNY (lives off campus) but I bet by the end of the week he won’t be going back.

I don’t think our public k-12 schools will go back this year.

Picked up my D from Cornell yesterday. Students can petition to stay on campus. Those are international students or US students with financial hardship. The rest are asked to move home. Those moving out of dorms by 3/27 will get housing and meal plan (prorated) reimbursements.

Students living in their own apartments off campus do not need to return home. However, all classes will be conduct only on line starting 4/6.

So Michigan sent out a stronger letter today basically saying get your kid off our campus. But let us know if your still around…?

I plan on going Friday as stated many times. Might have to put him over my shoulder and carry him away ?. OK, that’s not happening… He’s to heavy and I am not in 100% shape ?.. But at least do the move. Daughter comes today

Damn it!!! We liked being empty nesters ?.

OK, Ok, We want them back… They both have to “Attend” classes… During the day…then we have to be quiet and listen to them tell us they have lived on their own now for awhile and we don’t have to tell them stuff… Yikes…!!!

Don’t they understand that our job is to tell them stuff! ?

@Knowsstuff My kid is home now from Michigan. Arrived last night. A paper due by 9 PM EST today and a test tomorrow at 11:00 AM. I just know somehow that there will be a EST vs. PST issue at some point. One test was moved, but the other was not.

It’s unfortunate that one professor couldn’t see past his “behind” and think that there are students moving their lives this week. And maybe a test at the same time doesn’t make a lot of sense.

@sushiritto… Yep… Son has a test today and will see how that went. I wonder if kids have issues connecting or with Michigan’s Blue Jean programs (their version of zoom) what will happen…

Northeastern has cancelled its in person commencement scheduled for early May:

From facebook comments many students are unhappy and would prefer a delayed commencement in September.

Yep Chaos is ensuing

I have to say the info from University of MIchigan was vague and not very official, where were the above posters getting their info? Ours came 2nd hand from our daughter’s RA. They were told they may not be able to use their key cards tomorrow. They could appeal for extenuating circumstances, but after doing so did not get a reply. I called the emergency help line and a very nice gentleman had no idea if the kids were actually getting kicked out or not. So we are moving her home tonight and tomorrow. I hope they are reimbursing the housing fees! That of course was another unaswerable question I asked. Not impressed with how this top university has handled communication.

@3js3ks. Hi, my son’s on North Campus in Northwood 3. Talked to him today. He said the letter he got (we got a version today) stated they are OK to stay but kids in dorms are asked to leave soon like very soon. He has to fill out a form to ask for permission to stay. He really wants to stay hmmmm…
Could it be a girl??? ?.. Hmmm… He is really fighting this one. Hmmm ?.

I am still planning on going there Friday to start the move
If things suddenly get worse then he’s coming with… Back home.

As far as crediting housing Michigan is still thinking about their next steps. They didn’t make a decision yet. I would gladly take a tuition reduction for next year. Seriously…
Lots of people might be hurting from this world issue and I am talking people that have money… Hope these kids can come back.

Ohio State announced today that spring commencement will be postponed. Date TBD.

D has a test tomorrow. Professor said if they have connectivity issues and miss the test, then he’ll increase the weighting of the earlier test and the final.

Not sure what specific info you’re not getting but we’ve received multiple “Dear Parents” emails, filled with info, from the LSA Dean and one email from the President.

Our S is hoping that Stanford gets listed by US News as the nations #1 online university. ?

@Rivet2000 , Stanford already has a highly-regarded online high school program (as do some other universities). I wonder whether they will be able to take advantage of some of that know-how now?

UIUC canceled graduation ceremonies. "Diplomas will be mailed, and we are exploring possible alternatives such as rescheduling and/or hosting virtual events to honor the Class of 2020. "

@sushiritto
I asked my son if their being a bit more lient so people can adjust etc since they work in groups etc and people are all over the world (except for my son, even his roommate just left
Hmm)… He said if anything they are piling on even more intense work. So they have to actually also present in groups
So the group has to connect together then connect to the class professor. Maybe their doing this so the kids don’t slack off??

The good news is he has an internship offer with a signing bonus ?. 2 mangers interviewed him virtual. 1 like him… I said, why didn’t the other one like you… Lol ?

My daughter has been home from Cincinnati for almost a week. She’s a nursing student, so the college is trying to come up with “creative” solutions to clinical hours per the state Board of Nursing.

Not going to lie - moving worked out for her since she has been dealing with a toxic roommate situation all year. She is a different kid.

I was waiting to buy her a TV until she moves off campus in the fall. I bought it a couple days ago, and we re-worked her room so she could have a TV in there and a desk. I’m trying to give her a bit of the privacy she has earned as a young adult, along with the free room and board.

Then she comes and does her homework in the living room, lol.

@ChaosParent23 , I bet you can just leave the fridge in the dorm room (cleaned out, and unplugged). Was it placed there for him at the beginning of the year? Under normal circumstances, fridge rentals just stay there at move out, and the company comes and picks them up. (Speaking from my experience in general, not at your particular school).

@Knowsstuff it is really good to read that your student has just secured an internship!

@TS0104 Yes, it was placed for him. I’m hoping just unplug it and do a quick wipe out will be fine. He’s not going to have time to actually defrost it and clean it like he’s supposed to. They only get a 3 hr window to move out.
I don’t know how/when dorms will be open for the fridges to be picked up and the website we used to rent it is devoid of info and customer service contacts. Very annoying.

@Knowsstuff I hope that summer internships are not impacted, but I’m afraid they will be. Our S has had one nailed down since last fall but all bets are off. Graduates with full time offers are on my mind…

Anyone know what we’re supposed to do about 529’s when a school gives a pro rata refund for room & board? i.e., we accessed the 529 to pay r&b. Do we put it back into the 529? offset the fall semester? do nothing?

Guess I should ask my accountant.
