Colleges Worry They’ll Be Sued if They Reopen Campuses

@theloniusmonk, my daughter’s roommate already got notice that she is getting more than $900 from the school. She didn’t get any need-based aid, so we’re hoping D gets a good amount, too. She’s still waiting to hear, though.

Notre Dame is the latest to announce on campus classes, with students returning to campus mid August. Sounds like they are following Purdue’s model of cancelling breaks and ending in person instruction before Thanksgiving:

My daughter will be getting $448 from Susquehanna. Not as much as she expected from what her friends said, but still not bad. She also got a surprise check from SU today for $196 - reimbursement for her senior art show materials. She has NO idea what that’s about. I guess they felt bad that kids spent money on the show and then it was canceled.

We live in NJ, and my daughter will be a senior at U of SC. The majority of kids live off-campus because there is very little housing after freshman year. She is down there now, as are many of her friends.
I expect that she will stay through finals if our family isn’t having Thanksgiving as usual. The weather, her friends, and continuing her independent lifestyle are all important factors.

@jagrren So how is it going down there for the students who stayed at USC? I assume they can’t go into any buildings on campus. Has your D heard of any students with the virus since class went online?

I live in a college town where many many students remained in their off campus apartments and some dorms stayed open for students who couldn’t go home (Purdue did the same). I haven’t heard of any student cases here at home. Purdue had one student test positive during spring break but that was not a student who remained or returned to campus.

@homerdog UofSC had some students stay on campus. One did get covid. No details except that all students staying in that dorm were quarantined -likely international students.

UofSC did close the campus, library etc. I don’t know if they have any covid numbers for kids who stayed that are in off campus housing.

So just heard that DePaul University BFA theater program is being delayed till next year…ouch. Not sure what these kids will do for a year.

I can respect that though. I think the performing arts from a distance is just not a good plan, and if they can’t perform and they can’t train due to social distancing… well what’s left?

This is one of the best training grounds in the United States. Just surprising. Not sure if it’s just freshman or the whole program.

I respect DePaul’s decision. Good for them.

Bet it was a tough one to make…

There will be no face-to-face lectures at the University of Cambridge over the course of the next academic year due to coronavirus, it has been announced.<<<<<<<<<<

Seems a big signal to the UK.

If memory serves, I believe the Goodman School of Drama (DePaul’s Theater School) only accepts twenty students a year…? They cut students every year too, so that makes less than seventy or sixty students total. That’s for acting…I don’t know what it is for tech. At least, that’s what it was back in the day…things may have changed over the last decade or two. My point is, that may be a very small number of students.

They stopped cutting students about 6 years ago. Not sure how many it affects since you have both BFA and MFA plus the backstage people like theater design etc.

Ah yes, I forgot about the MFA folks. It’s nice the BFA program stopped cutting people. It used to be rather cut-throat. So now I am guessing about two hundred students? I am guessing a larger program could not pull this off without severe financial consequences.

Yep
15 BFA and 3 MFA programs. Not sure how each is being affected. Just some news thrown my way and I don’t have the full details yet. I’ll have to reach out to a contact. Again not sure if this just affects the freshman class or the whole program yet.

The lectures are not a big part of the educational experience at Cambridge and many students regard them as optional. It will be interesting to see if the small group or individual tutor sessions which are the heart of Cambridge go online.

We have a friend at DuPaul for film. It’s been tough as not only did school go online, but filming in Chicago came to grinding halt, and his summer internship in Hollywood was cancelled (hopefully postponed). I haven’t heard anything from them about next Fall. :frowning:
