Coronavirus in the US

Some of us have health factors (pre-existing conditions), as well as age working against us. We are concerned about all viruses and bacteria circulating in our communities.

I am likely shelving most of my 2020 travel. May consider neighbor island travel, but otherwise not much. Will be postponing my visit to my CA doctor until some undetermined future date.

Given the stock market performance this week, the corona virus might cause more damage to invested people than infected ones.

Well, it’s definitely going to cut into travel budgets!

Spring break travel is coming up…

There is a thread on the topic of spring break and the coronavirus.

I lived five years and had my first child in a country with universal health care coverage and it was fabulous. Great care. Choice of doctors. Infinitely better post-natal care.

I am a bit bemused by the fear in this thread. I go to a class in NYC once a week, at the China Institute! Everyone seems very healthy BTW and no one is wearing a mask. One person in my class was in Hong Kong in December or early January. I do wash my hands when I arrive, but mostly because I’ve been on the subway, not because of specific fears of the Corona virus.

re: testing. In addition to the kits for confirming COVID-19, ā€œCDC is working to develop a new laboratory test to assist with efforts to determine how much of the U.S. population has been exposed to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19.ā€

But note:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/testing.html

There is plenty to be fearful of when the stock market loses 15% of its value in one week. Internships and jobs may disappear, in addition to the equity already lost. A substantial outbreak of a virus will overwhelm our already fragile health care system. Our school just sent a note that it is prepared to finish the year online if necessary,-That works for us, but won’t for others. The disruptions are very difficult, even if you never get sick.

I agree that I’m way more worried about the response to the virus than the virus itself.

Finishing school online for the rest of the year? That’s nice, but what about the students who don’t have consistent internet access? What are parents going to do about childcare?

This is precisely why people need to stop listening to the overhyping media and be logical, not panic. The shear panic is on track to bankrupt untold numbers of individuals and families and plunge us back into a recession or worse.

The ironic thing is we’re not even worried about the things that are actually very much at risk - like the global supply chain. Outside of highly specialized circles, there isn’t much chatter about this.

Nonprofits also take a hit as donations will decrease. (Donations took a big hit back '08/'09) from even wealthy individuals; corporations will also reduce giving.) For those of you associated with non-profits, time to seriously look at the aggressiveness of your budget.

They haven’t closed the school—they are preparing a plan for the worst case scenario. I trust our schools not to close in a blind panic, but I expect them to have contingency plans and communicate with us. If not this virus, certainly some disease someday will cause them to close in the interest of saving lives. Actually, our schools were closed for two weeks after hurricane Sandy. DH had to work, but I didn’t, so I would watch a bunch of kids each day. The community certainly bonded.

The Washington Post is reporting a second case of community transmission of coronavirus, a 65-year-old woman in Santa Clara County, California. I’m glad all of you are feeling so jolly about this, but I live in Santa Clara County and I’d like the federal government to start testing people.

^^ From the WaPo article: ā€œThat means the virus appears to be spreading among at least two separate populations, according to people who spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not been released publicly.ā€

Solano and Santa Clara counties are about 90 miles apart.

@Artist2233 - this site has lots of info.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

If you click on ā€œage, sex, and existing conditions at deathā€ you get the numbers that were quoted for people in their 60s. The ā€œregularā€ flu has a death rate of about .1%. For coronavirus, estimates range from 1.5 - 3%. Considerably higher!

My internist whom I saw yesterday for checkup was pleased and approved when I told her I had cancelled all plans for flights to and from the continental US for indefinite future, since I’m at increased risk due to my health conditions. We agree I would likely have a bad time of it if I catch anything, as my lungs are already working very hard on a good day.

To the extent we are closing schools, having people work from home, etc, the goal presumably be community distancing. Defeats purpose to have numbers of kids gathering at friends’ houses or day cares. Very different situation than a hurricane.

And with the large numbers of kids who are either at schools or day cares pretty much all day, closing schools presents a huge logistical issue for parents and businesses. May have to be done (at least in pockets around the country). But we shall see.

I know you all don’t have a crystal ball. But should folks be concerned about domestic air travel plans?

again please explain why the most developed country in the world (who is supposedly so ready for this) has known about this virus for 5 weeks and still does not have the testing capabilities that Italy does. Please.

We are so quick to say that we are the best… In this case we are not the best right now.

Just not Corona sales…

one possibility (CDC has issues with efficacy of other test protocols) posted previously. And as far as testing the masses, that was also covered up thread.
