Coronavirus in the US

As long as it is > 60% alcohol + water, you can DIY hand sanitize/spray or similar, but IMO steer clear of ingredients like Aloe Vera. You might find a gelling agent (try lotioncrafter or similar) if you require a pump-able option, or easier, just make a spray.

I have not been looking for it, but saw a note on the local moms’ FB page about the shortage. Suggestions were to check Office Depot, Staples, or Target for in-store pick up. Someone commented that Costco does sell it, but since I don’t buy it, I have never noticed it.

I just checked and my local Home Depot sells it for in-store pick-up, so perhaps check there or Lowes.

The Gilead trials.

I am not concerned. I have been bringing work home every night

And the school employee? The two canceled days? The relative tested NEGATIVE. At least the school is now spotless.

"First, at the park I often go to, a kid was attacked by a lion. Now, in a local hospital that I have in the past been treated at, someone has been diagnosed with COVID-19; presumably before she was hospitalized she was out and about at places I go to. It’s a dangerous world out there. "

I guess you had better stay home in isolation for the rest of your life.
That way no one can hurt you

Now that CDC has complete step 1, testing, just in nick of time for possible community spreads viruses, we can now start criticizing why they don’t have a cure, yet. (sarcasm font)

Since it’s been pointed out numerous times upthread, that one could fly from China/Asia to a number of places and subsequently into the US - avoiding the travel restrictions put into place early - shouldn’t come as a surprise it’s been circulating out there.

Good news is, here in a little bit, if I want to risk eating out I’ll give the same jaundiced eye to the BBQ shacks that I’ve been giving Chinese restaurants for the last couple weeks.

Denatured alcohol is kind of rough on your hands but Home Depot, etc. carries it in gallon tins. Might cut it with water or hand lotion, since I believe it’s 100% ethyl alcohol other than the additive to discourage consumption.

Do recall seeing that 60% ethyl is the lower limit advised for the purpose.

Please DO NOT follow that advice!!! Denatured alcohol might contains toxic or nasty additives. Chemists handle denatured alcohol in GLOVES. For a reason.

A bit better - use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). Just do not overdo it.

I was just looking up suggestions for homemade wipes to disinfect surfaces. They suggest mixing water with a bit of Dawn detergent and some rubbing alcohol, plus a bit of baking soda. I wonder what to mix rubbing alcohol with for an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

would anyone here be concerned going to a doctors office or medical facility/ hospital as we begin to find more cases positive for this virus? wouldn’t doctors offices be an obvious place where people will come - and spread the virus.

Any thoughts on how to deal with that?

Postpone any elective procedures. Call ahead if you do need care. Some clinics will have ill/well entrances and waiting room. Our pediatric clinic did.

For the hands, just use good ol’ soap. Works better than any sanitizer. ’

Just use soap, rub hands and use lots of water!

I use hand sanitizer in places where there is no running water.

“Just use soap, rub hands and use lots of water!”

We use hand sanitizer in our car as soon as we leave a store. I also use as soon as I get off and on the commuter train. We wash with soap and water when we can. But there’s just a lot of times there’s no opportunity for it.

I’ve purchased bulk hand sanitizer from Costco before, also Walmart. We used to have it when we had a clinic at health fairs. Our Costco sanitizer purchases were many years ago, so that may have been discontinued.

So many people in our country can’t even handle an unexpected $500 expense.

If they are in a job where not working means no money, it could mean not meeting their rent or having money for groceries. Personal bankruptcy won’t help these people.

Not even a little.

As people who follow my other thread know, I’m at the point in my (high risk) pregnancy where I’m going to the main hospital (Univ of Michigan) 2-3x a week and various clinics almost every other day.

Almost every suspected case of COVID-19 in the state has been taken to the U of M hospital. I know this. I don’t fear it at all. I also know that when I give birth sometime in the next few weeks, there will likely be cases of COVID-19 at the hospital.

Of anywhere, the hospital and clinics are probably the places I fear least. Not too many other places that constantly disinfect and where you are screened for illness and are forced to wear a mask if TPTB deem you a risk or a potential risk.

US State Department raises travel advisory for Italy amid coronavirus outbreak

The US State Department on Friday raised its travel advisory for Italy to Level 3, meaning travelers should reconsider travel due to the novel coronavirus.

There is only one other travel advisory higher – Level 4, which means do not travel.

“At this time, CDC recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Italy,” the State Department’s advisory says.

"“once-in-a-century pandemic” and urged leaders to both “solve the immediate problem and keep it from happening again.”

We need to save lives now while also improving the way we respond to outbreaks in general," Gates wrote. Gates went on to write that larger, more developed countries should help their own citizens in responding to pandemics, but also assist 'low- and middle-income countries" in preparing for them.

“By helping African and South Asian countries get ready now, we can save lives and slow the global circulation of the virus,” Gates wrote." (CNN)

Port of Los Angeles estimates 25% decrease in volume due to coronavirus

"The Port of Los Angeles is one of the world’s busiest seaports and the leading gateway for international trade in the Western Hemisphere, according to the port’s website

The 25% decrease in overall volumes this month compared to February of last year is “largely due to coronavirus,” Sanfield said. He explained that trade war is a factor, but coronavirus is the main reason.

The port estimates an overall decrease for the first quarter of 2020 of about 15% compared to 2019, Sanfield added." (CNN)
