Coronavirus in the US

Trump press conference right now:

Woman who died in WA had pre-existing conditions. 4 others are critically ill.

He put the count at 22. I assume those are people who weren’t evacuated as they seem to be separating those out each time. Not sure.

Just went to Costco. They had hand sanitizer prominently displayed at the entrance for people to use and staff were wiping down the handle of the shopping carts.

I wonder do parents who hope that schools will close in affected areas realize that day care centers would also close.

My husband and I discussed this - we’re in a cautious but normal mode at the moment. He has some elective surgery he was planning at the end of March - it would be outpatient in a dedicated facility, not a hospital. But he’s “wait and see” what happens in the next couple of weeks.

I have a group of girlfriends, some of whom are hug and kissers. Last week we met for happy hour and one friend had just come back from a month long trip including a three week cruise in New Zealand and Australia. I know those countries have been very strict on the situation but still wish I had not let her kiss my cheek.

Although I’m technically in a higher risk category (age 68 with type II diabetes), I seldom get sick and never get the flu. But our son in Seattle recently got over a bad bout of the flu. He came down with it at about the time the first patient in that area was identified. He just (!) had the regular flu but I worry about his immune system. I’m glad that his employer Amazon is taking an abundance of caution.

There was an article in today’s paper about how San Diego County is setting up for potential issues. It didn’t mention the homeless, however, and there’s a substantial population here. Also it didn’t discuss any screening at the Tijuana border, although that’s really Federal.

My sister-in-law recently returned from a one month work trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, and a cousin was in India for a three week karma retreat. Fingers crossed for both of them.

Supposedly in Japan they didn’t close day care but that makes zero sense to me.

Press conference:

Pence: Level 4 for travel to Italy and South Korea.

Washington State Governor Inslee is referring to the Covid-19 patient who died as a man not a woman.

@doschicos i give you a lot of credit for starting this thread 5 weeks ago. Initially I thought the coronavirus was much ado about nothing but have quickly come to the conclusion this a a very serious pandemic. I just wanted to say “thank you” for all of the updates.

Thanks, @socaldad2002. I have contributed but don’t get credit for starting it. That is @TatinG.

If that’s true, the CDC hasn’t updated their website yet, at least for Italy (I didn’t check S. Korea).

I just heard that my son’s college decided today to send their kids home from their Florence program. They will finish their courses online. On the upside, those in the freshman year abroad program at least got the benefit on being abroad since last September, while upperclassmen only there for spring semester didn’t have much time to enjoy the program. ?

Editing to say…what is Level 4? The CDC doesn’t even show a Level 4 on their list of warnings.

Yes, I give a lot of credit collecting information on the virus to @doschicos but not staring the thread. That goes to @TatinG .

Maybe it is a State Dept Level 4.

Here’s where one can see State Dept travel advisories, and their levels. Italy and South Korea still showing as Level 3:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html/

I am on another board and it was discussed that a man died in Washington - at Evergreen medical facility - why is Trump only mentioning one death?
Can someone better than me fact check this?

By all reports, only one death in WA. Not sure man or woman. Supposedly in 50s with pre-existing conditions.

We just got back from shopping. I bought three small containers of Purell knock offs. And I got a huge jar of cashews with sea salt. I’m all set.?‍♀️

I’m surprised there haven’t been reported cases of this in India…or have there and I missed that.

Level 4 alert for Italy is for the Red Zone area…North of Tuscany/Florence…the rest of Italy remains at Level 3 and my understanding is other countries have the rest of Italy at Level 2.

3 cases in India but to my knowledge they are evacuees. Lots of places don’t have official cases yet but that doesn’t mean they don’t have cases. Depends on protocols being used. We didn’t have human to human transmission here in the USA without a evacuee connection until the past few days so…

What the heck is going on? How can either of them get that wrong?

I am thinking I need to order some wine, at least enough for 2 weeks.

I have to wonder. I recovered from a cold (or mild flu) about six weeks ago that had a lingering cough, as did my husband. We still have the cough. My doctor said there was something going around in Seattle that sounded like what we had. It makes me wonder if the coronavirus has already been in the area for months. We have heavy travel from China in the Seattle area.
