That’s what I’ve been wondering about. I’ve seen reference to other countries (Australia, France as examples) doing a 14 day quarantine but have seen nothing about the plans for the American evacuees.
Flight coming to ONT does not make me happy. In my backyard-guess I’ll avoid the airport for a bit!
If they try to quarantine returning Americans I can see the ACLU getting involved.
France is keeping its evacuees in another nearby Chinese city for observation. Not sure how Australia is handling it.

I believe CDC has some special authority under the US law.

Yes, while I would not dismiss that possibility, there is a greater risk: it would make folks leery to seek medical help or come forward if they develop mild symptoms of a respiratory illness AND had been in contact with someone who has been to Wuhan etc. for fear of being forcefully locked up.
^^^^ I wonder about that…
Personally, if I was in that situation and thought there was a chance I (or family member) was infected I’d rather be at the head of the pack when it comes to available medical observation and treatment. Quarantine and high level care would be preferable to staying in hiding.
They did isolate folks for observation when they were returning from Ebola zone, but far fewer numbers of people.
Hope my relative is evacuated. She’s a recent college grad teaching English in China.

It looks like CDC and the states have some authority.

Confirmed infection cases have now jumped to 4,474 with 107 death.
@HImom Yes and a nurse returning from Africa refused to be quarantined and the ACLU did get involved. She rode her bike around her town to show her defiance.
CDC has Federal authority referred to as Final Rule. But it looks like that might be limited to 72 hours.

Big jump.
The JHU website now shows little scull and crossbones icons to indicate where deaths have occurred.
The total number of confirmed cases reported by China is even higher at 4,529 (in China alone).
As expected (in a city of 11 million and beyond) and more to come. People in poor health with no medical intervention in the early stages are the most vulnerable ones. I would be interested to see the mortality break down by ages. During the SARS outbreak, vast majority of those who died were over 65 per WHO data (50% mortality).
From what I’ve read, China has been indicating the same with this virus. Deaths seem to be focused on those with underlying health issues and most are older. Younger people seem to be having milder cases.
I suspect there are many more walking cases of this virus with nothing more than mild respiratory issues. Those folks are still contagious…
Time to order cat food and litter. In the unlikely event of mass quarantine, my cats will not be forgiving if they run out of their stuffs. Just kidding. Always a smart idea to be stocked up.
SO, what kind of shape is the CDC in after a couple years of budget cuts?
^^ Bought 120#s at Costco today and will probably add to it. Might seem excessive but we’ve way more than one cat.
The reported mortality rate isn’t really that cheery, not to mention that it’s even less so for those of a certain age. Which I might be of, along with some here.
Can’t remember what I’ve read on this thread vs. what I’ve seen elsewhere, so forgive me if I’m asking something that’s been answered.
- Coronavirus transmission is more of a contaminated hand to your face process than inhalation of an aerosol?
- Hand washing, repeated and thorough, is good but are alcohol based sanitizers better? Because they denature the virus?
- Life of the virus on a contaminated surface might be of the order of.... ?
- While a lot photos show people wearing surgical masks, are they of certain utility when they've become wetted by your breath?
