Coronavirus in the US

My understanding is it is airborne as well as by touch.

Don’t know the answer to other questions. I think there are still too many unknowns about this virus at this stage to say with certainty.

I’ve read that people who are being held in isolation in the US are being kept in negative pressure rooms.

This better not interfere with D17’s summer abroad in ShangHai.

Sorry, the thread is so many pages long that I didn’t read them all.
Just here to post a link to a nifty infographic that puts the virus into some context.
2019-nCoV is the virus.

Story tonight from city official is that the old unused portion of the ONT airport will be used for returning citizens and they will be held there in quarantine. ?

https://www.dailybulletin.com/2020/01/27/flight-leaving-center-of-coronavirus-outbreak-in-china-bound-for-ontario-airport-reports-say/

ONT was not just randomly picked:

"ONT is designated as a repatriation center, whereby Americans stationed overseas can return safely, said ONT spokesman Steve Lambert.

This would be the first time the airport would be used as a repatriation center, said David Wert, a spokesman for San Bernardino County."

Nextdoor ap saying they chose ONT after pressure from San Francisco residents. Also says if they are symptom free they will be free to go. We shall see…

Hopefully they realize symptom free doesn’t mean not contagious!

Article posted above says:

"Wert said after passengers deplaning at ONT are reexamined by CDC doctors, there’s a possibility they would remain at the airport for observation for a period of time.

In a statement, the county said the Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Services, and other departments are establishing a reception area and temporary living quarters in a space at ONT removed from the passenger terminals and other public areas.

“The county’s job will be to make this location as comfortable for them as possible, keeping in mind they might be here for up to two weeks,” Wert said."

It also says this so I wonder why the original plan was SFO to begin with.

“Wert said the county and the airport have been holding numerous exercises and drills to be ready for any scenario. “Everyone’s been preparing for this for years,” he added. The airport reported that the state’s Medical and Health Coordination Center (MHCC) in Sacramento has been activated.”

@Sue22 Those skull and crossbones seemed to disappear. Maybe someone realized it was a bit morbid.

@doschicos, it did strike me as a little ghoulish.

Some takeaways:

shortage of medical supplies was a major constraint in China’s efforts to contain the outbreak and treat infected people

China was sending about 6,000 medical personnel to Hubei from around the country – with more than 4,000 already there and 1,800 more due to arrive by Tuesday evening – to work in Wuhan and seven other cities in the province. In Wuhan, more than 10,000 hospital beds had been available to accommodate the growing number of patients, she said.

some of the extra personnel could not be deployed effectively, because of a lack of medical supplies such as protective clothing.

A risk assessment report based on analysis of 2,744 infections recorded up to Sunday by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, released on Monday

main route of transmission was respiratory droplet and close physical contact.
“The virus is highly contagious, with a reproduction number [the average number of cases each case generates during the infectious period] of between two and three. There is no reliable evidence that the disease is contagious during the incubation period,” the report said, adding that the incubation period was between one and 14 days

It said it expected the number of infections in Wuhan and other parts of Hubei province to continue to increase because of obvious community transmission.

the male-to-female ratio for infected patients was 1.16:1, and that only 0.6 per cent of infected people were under 15 years old. It said 16.8 per cent of patients had developed severe pneumonia, and estimated that fatality rate would be less than 3 per cent.

Another article by the same publication states:
“National Health Commission minister Ma Xiaowei said on Sunday that, unlike Sars, the coronavirus was contagious even in an incubation stage that could last up to 14 days. Ma added that some infected with the virus may not show any symptoms and further risks from the virus’ potential mutations remain unknown.
“At present, the rate of development of the epidemic is accelerating,” Ma said. “I am afraid that it will continue for some time, and the number of cases may increase.””

(so conflicts with above)

Also:

“The infected people are mostly aged between 40 and 60, Chinese health officials said. Most of the deaths so far have been of elderly and middle-aged people with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, but the youngest-known victim was a 36-year-old man from Hubei province.”

The World Health Organisation’s director-general said on Tuesday he is confident in China’s ability to control and contain the spread of a new coronavirus, according to state news agency Xinhua.

At a meeting with authorities in Beijing, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he approved of the Chinese government’s measures to curb the outbreak so far, Xinhua reported.

Tedros also said he does not advocate the evacuation of foreign nationals currently in China, and urged people to stay calm. (Rueters)

Hmmm…

Japan will send a chartered flight on Tuesday night to Wuhan, the epicenter of China’s virus outbreak, to evacuate its nationals looking to return home…

The government is arranging for additional flights that will leave for Wuhan as early as Wednesday, he added.

“We will dispatch the first flight to Wuhan tonight, which will bring masks, protective suits and other support items for Chinese people and Japanese nationals there.”

Those with symptoms such as fever will be sent to hospital on landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport, he added, while those with no signs of virus can go home and then to work or school, but told to avoid crowds and take their temperatures twice a day.

Any who later develop symptoms such as fever, a cough or a sore throat will be asked to contact health officials.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s cabinet also decided to declare the new virus infection a “designated infectious disease,” so as to let authorities hospitalize even patients who refuse consent. (Financial Post)

@doschicos ,

You kept posting until 3am this morning. Doesn’t Hobbes need sleep?

Just kidding…or not. According to this summary of research, yes, your cat (…and your dog, and your hamster…) would eat you after you’re dead:

Just one more thing to consider during this coronavirus outbreak.

Just read in Bloomberg that China is canceling TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT testing scheduled for February.

As someone with no medical background, I’m curious. If a disease is contagious before people show any symptoms, and we decide to repatriate people from a hot spot area, would it be effective to have a remote vacant trailer park available to house those people? So everyone gets their own trailer? That way it would cut down on the risk of a non-infected person catching it from an unknown infected person? Trailers could be stocked with food in advance, and WiFi would be provided so people could work and communicate with their families and the supervising medical team. If anyone gets sick, they can then be moved to a specified hospital that’s set up to handle quarantine cases. People would have to sign an agreement that they’d go to the trailer park for observation for X days in exchange for getting to go on the plane.

How would you get people to sit on a plane without getting it from each other? Fully suited up? Is that practical?

At this point, it would be irresponsible for a company to allow their employees to travel to China in the near future. Several big ones have already suspended travel.

"Japan has announced the first case of coronavirus transmission within its borders: a man in his sixties from Nara prefecture who drove a bus for two parties of tourists from Wuhan" (Financial Times)

Taiwan also confirmed its first case of domestic transmission.

Thailand is up to 14 cases now, adding 6 new cases of people arriving infected.

Hong Kong cuts rail links to mainland China.

German has a case of domestic transmission as well-a man who attended a meeting with a woman who had been in Wuhan.
