IRAQ - 6 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of cases there to 19.
The ministry said two of the six are in the capital Baghdad and the other four in Sulaimaniya in the north east of the country. All had recently returned from Iran.
NETHERLANDS - A patient who has tested positive for coronavirus in Rotterdam, had been staying for a week at another hospital in the Netherlands, the news site Nu.nl reports.
The patient had stayed at the Beatrix hospital in nearby Gorchem, for a week without being tested, the site said. The hospital did not respond to comment but said it is closed to visitors and new patients.
^^
@MarylandJOE - Hereâs another reason to test more aggressively for those with symptoms and randomly. It helps avoid exposing other patients, who are already sick and thus at greater risk of dying, and also health care workers, who we definitely need to stay healthy because outbreaks will cause shortages we canât afford to have. This happened in the CA case where the patient was delayed by days in testing. Over 100 health care workers were exposed and are now in self-quarantine and canât work.
âSame thing in Italy by reports. If Chinese cases are an indication, many people donât die right away. It can take awhile - weeks or longer.â
Letâs use correct terminology, please. There are already many alarmists reading this thread⊠The above implies that all infected will die. Not true.
@bluebayou - I respect your opinions, but without the scientific confirmation, those are just opinions and not facts. Letâs please not call our scientists âstinking expertsâ - they already get a lot of flack for apparently not doing enough or waste resources.
Italy took action before the US and more complete, banning all flights. I stand by my statement. US first stopped entry from Wuhan before expanding further and flights were still happening when the USA put a mandatory quarantine on Americans returning and banned non-citizens who had been in China the previous 14 days. Flights were still happening.
Just setting the facts correctly. Donât like âfake newsâ built on propaganda. Both countries have Covid-19 spreading anyway. Weâre bound to see more.
Perhpas this patient in CA? If s/he had been tested, 124 medical staff at UC Davis Medical Center likely wouldnât have to be quarantined. By ignoring a few patients initially, we run the risk of having many more patients later. Isnât that what prevention is all about? If we donât, we may have to quarantine much larger population later.
@Tigerle From what I understand, the coronavirus very rarely causes sore throat or nasal discharge. If your family has these symptoms itâs probably just a cold.
Ok, serious question. We are holding a funeral for my dad in 2 weeks. It is expected to draw perhaps 1000 or so people who will want to shake our hands, hug and otherwise interact with us as family of the departed. I canât imagine any of us instructing everyone to just do elbow bumps instead. What do we do? Mom is 90 and several of us have asthma and a few of us have other respiratory conditions as well.
A month later we will be at a weddingâsimilar dilemma.
ITALY - 566 new cases for a total of 1694 and 5 new deaths for a total of 34. Among the 1,577 active cases, 779 (49%) are hospitalized, 140 (9%) are in intensive care. Among the 117 closed cases, 83 (71%) have recovered, 34 (29%) have died.
IRAN - Non-essential British embassy staff in Tehran are being withdrawn with immediate effect due to the virus
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - 1st confirmed case - a 62 year old male tourist visiting the country from Italy who is in a stable condition. He has been taken to an isolation in a military hospital near the capital.
BAHRAIN - 6 more cases for a total of 47. Five of the cases are Bahraini citizens and one is Saudi Arabian, all who had come from Iran.
Very good point. On the Worldometer website, which has proven to be an accurate repository of data and info, it has this on the symptoms page:
âNotably, the COVID-19 infection rarely seems to cause a runny nose, sneezing, or sore throat (these symptoms have been observed in only about 5% of patients). Sore throat, sneezing, and stuffy nose are most often signs of a cold.â
Incorrect. You are spreading a lot of misinformation. Like âsmoking protects against coronavirus.â
About 20% of common colds are caused by coronaviruses in addition to rhinoviruses that cause the majority of colds. Here is what the experts say the symptoms could look like:
Conclusion not supported by any facts. At this point we have ZERO information on the quality of the tests being used elsewhere.
Was the first batch rollout bungled by CDC? Absolutely.
Was designing their own test âincompetenceâ? Maybe, but where is the proof that CDC did not design a much higher efficacy test, and longer term it was worth the delay?
WASHINGTON
From the Washington Post
"The novel coronavirus has probably been spreading undetected for about six weeks in Washington state, where the first U.S. death from covid-19 was reported this weekend. A genetic analysis of the virus from a newly diagnosed patient in Snohomish County closely matched that of a specimen from the first known coronavirus patient in the United States, who traveled from China in January.
The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that these cases are linked through community transmission, researchers say, and that this has been going on for weeks, with hundreds of infections likely.
The first U.S. death, in Washington state, was man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, officials said. The patient had no recent travel history or contact with people known to be infected, officials said.
Officials in the Seattle area announced two cases related to a possible outbreak at a long-term nursing home, Life Care Center in Kirkland. The elderly are considered to be especially vulnerable to infection. One patient is a health-care worker in her 40s who was in satisfactory condition, according to state health officials. The other, a resident in her 70s, is in serious condition."
That would explain how the virus killed the first victim in Washington, who had not traveled outside the country, and how it made itâs way into a long term nursing care facility.
"Prof Andrew Tatem, Professor within Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton, said:
âWeâve reached a stage now where Chinaâs major efforts to stop the outbreak within its borders have meant that it likely has stronger coronavirus surveillance and detection capabilities than anywhere else in the world.
âThe fact that China is now detecting and reporting imported cases that are coming from Iran and the UK is an indication of how the geographical balance of this outbreak is shifting as we seemingly move towards a global pandemic.â (Guardian)
Wear gloves to shake hands. Maybe buy a couple of nice black silk-like pairs from an eveningwear shop? It will look nice and appropriate, and may be better than nothing.
