The numbers will sky rocket in the next week. Testing centers should be activated in all states I think this week. More testing will equal more cases found.
Two cases in Florida now, and yes, this is just because weāre finally testing. Itās clearly pretty wide spread and it seems that some of those early models suggesting the outbreak started in November were likely accurate.
This is definitely an interesting thought (interesting only used for the lack of a better word coming to mind at the moment). Since it seems the virus can live on paper, etc, for up to a week or 9 days, I suppose they could wait that long to have people handle them for safety reasons. It wonāt stop the virus spreading for anyone waiting in line or casual contact going in/out of wherever they get the paper ballots from - and can they even get them printed quickly enough?
Then my mind wonders to how the whole thing will affect the elections. Iām not considering āwhoā one votes for to handle the issue. Iām talking about how many supporters of any particular candidate figure out their vote is/isnāt worth the risk. How many times does ā1ā vote change the outcome, but if oodles think that way itās quite possibly a different ending than just a few.
Totally agree. That is what Iām ticked off about. The government is not prepared - the testing was a complete failure, yet they say we are the most prepared in the world, best system in the world. Our health system is not prepared, and we could have been testing and self quarantining weeks ago if there had been testing. Now what? The cats out of the bag. Are there going to be banned domestic flights from Washington state? The focus should have been on education. Iāve been looking for info on how this has spread - itās obviously not just from close contacts. Surfaces hold this virus for a long time.

well, theyāll have to ban flights from NY, RI, IL AND FL as well.
The administration seemed very focused on stabilizing the stock market. Does anyone here think the sock market is going to have a good day tomorrow after this weekend of cases blossoming and a few deaths with more certainly on the horizon?
Banning flights from CA and WA? Lol. That cat is out of the bag!
The stock market is gonna do what the stock market is gonna do. Sad that it takes a pandemic for VCs to realize that healthcare is more important than apps.
Just a heads up, no updates on the CDC website. Guess everyone needs to wait until 4pm on MWF despite this claim: āThis is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available, in addition to updated guidance.ā

Overnight market is Up right now after opening down. Of course, it could turn downward in the next 5 minutes, but the overnight Futures market is usually a good indication to tomorrowās open.
Personally, Iām glad to see the individual states updating as they learn more. I suspect weāll get more accurate info that way. They care about the residents of their own state and stopping the spread, not just about what the stock market might do.
US Health and Human Services launches investigation into coronavirus test manufacturing defect
"The US Health and Human Services Department has launched an investigation into a manufacturing defect in novel coronavirus tests created by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to an official at the agency.
The coronavirus tests were sent to labs across the United States but werenāt usable for weeks because of a flaw.
The agency is bringing together a team of non-CDC scientists āto better understand the nature and source of the manufacturing defect in the first batch of COVID-19 test kits that were distributed to state health departments and others.ā
Food and Drug Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said in a statement that the FDA worked with the CDC to identify the manufacturing issue with the tests and resolve it.
āFDA has confidence in the design and current manufacturing of the test that already have and are continuing to be distributed,ā Hahn said. āThese tests have passed extensive quality control procedures and will provide the high-level of diagnostic accuracy we need during this coronavirus outbreak.ā (CNN)
More cases in WA: forgive me if this was posted - Iām losing track!
"Four new presumptive positive cases of the novel coronavirus were detected in a single facility in Washington stateās King County, authorities said.
The four patients are residents of Life Care Center nursing home in the city of Kirkland, the county public health authority said in a news release. Of those four patients, one has died. All were being held at the same hospital, EvergreenHealth, in Kirkland.
The county identified the four cases as:
A woman in her 80s with underlying health conditions and in critical condition
A woman in her 90s with underlying health conditions and in critical condition
A man in his 70s with underlying health conditions and in critical condition
A man in his 70s who had underlying health conditions and died on Saturday
Two previous cases, one resident and one associate were reported at that facility Saturday.
To date, 10 coronavirus cases have been identified in King County and 12 total cases in Washington. " (CNN)
I am also curious about āunderlying medical conditionsā. I would think itās a spectrum with mild disease carrying a mild increase in risk etc., but I donāt think we have more detailed data yet.
āHypertensionā is a risk factor in the reports from China, resulting in a CFR (crude fatality rate) of 8.4%. But itās hard to know how that translates to the US. Hypertension is more prevalent in the US than in China, but that could be because new guidelines were issued here in 2017 which lowered the threshold. Also, more people in China have uncontrolled hypertension. Then again, only 1 in 4 Americans who have hypertension have it under control.
Since almost half of American adults have hypertension, it would be great to know more. Maybe when WHO reports from Italy or Germany.
Florida, Oregon and Rhode Island identify new presumptive positive coronavirus cases - 2nd cases for OR and RI plus the 2 in FL (same ones @Qtinfo previously posted)
"Florida, Oregon and Rhode Island have identified new presumptive positive coronavirus cases, health authorities in those states said.
The case in Oregon is the second presumptive positive in that state. It involves a Washington County resident who is an adult household contact of the first presumptive positive case.
The patient in Rhode Island is a female teenager who is at home with mild symptoms. She is the second case identified in the state. The first is a man in his 40s.
Both of them went on a trip to Europe organized by Saint Raphael Academy, a school in the city of Pawtucket.
All 38 people who attended the trip will self-monitor for symptoms at home for 14 days with public health supervision. They have been instructed to not go to school or work and to remain at home for the two-week period.
The school will be closed for the remainder of this week.
Floridaās Department of Health announced that stateās two new presumptive positive cases on Twitter. The governor, Ron DeSantis has declared a public health emergency to combat the virusā spread." (CNN) - one adult resident of Hillsborough County and one adult resident of Manatee County.
Does anyone think admitted students weekends at colleges will be cancelled due to this? It does seem like an easy environment to spread illness with students from all over.
