Coronavirus in the US

Up-thread it was mentioned that some localities were advising food and water sufficient for two weeks. Food, I understand, because while the government might not be able to force people to stay home, they might very well be able to shut down any reason to go out… like grocery stores.

The water is puzzling, unless it’s some do-bee’s idea of covering all the bases, because I can’t see that kind of essential service being neglected.

Myself, I live far enough out in the sticks that essential services, like electricity, can be ephemeral.

“Women wash their hands significantly more often”: men being told to

“Women wash their hands significantly more often, use soap more often, and wash their hands somewhat longer than men,” according to a 2013 Michigan State University field study…

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online fact sheet “Handwashing: A corporate activity,” cites a 2009 study that finds “only 31% of men and 65% of women washed their hands” after using a public restroom.

“Women wash their hands significantly more often, use soap more often, and wash their hands somewhat longer than men,” according to a 2013 Michigan State University field study conducted by research assistants who observed nearly 4,000 people in restrooms around East Lansing, Michigan.

“If you stand in the men’s bathroom at work, and watch men leave, they mostly don’t wash their hands if they used the urinal,” said one New York City public relations executive, who did not want to be identified for fear of alienating his colleagues.

Since the virus’s spread, he’s seen an uptick in men’s handwashing at work, he noted. “I, for the record, do wash my hands all the time,” he added." (Guardian)

Coronavirus: Canada’s first case of community infection announced in British

The BC woman had no recent travel history and no known contact with another patient

The first known case of infection in Canada involving a US visitor, a woman who travelled to BC from Seattle, was also announced

"Canada has suffered its first case of community infection of the Covid-19 coronavirus, involving a woman in British Columbia who had not recently travelled and had no known contact with another identified patient.

The woman was among eight new patients in BC announced by provincial health minister Adrian Dix and Dr Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, on Thursday afternoon.

Also among the cases was the first known case in Canada involving a visitor from the US. That patient was a woman who had travelled from Washington state, which is emerging as a new hotspot for the disease." (SCMP)

Duh. Women do the bulk of dirty work at home (catbox cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, diaper changes; cooking, etc. ). It comes naturally to us.

@catahoula
Not everyone has the luxury of having drinkable water right out of the tap.

For those who have to rely on bottled water, that is who needs to stay well stocked.

If your water supply is fine then you have 2 weeks prepared. In the tap.

Think Flint.

Lots of areas with PFAs, too.

Yikes, someone on twitter pointed out that exactly 7 weeks ago it was announced that Wuhan had 198 cases of the novel coronavirus and some were not linked to the outbreak market.

The three Marylanders are residents of Montgomery county. They are a couple in their 70’s and another person in his 50’s. All are doing well, they had traveled abroad (Governor Hogan did not specify where). He has declared a state of emergency in Maryland.

Charming quote from CNBC’s humanitarian Rick Santelli about stabilizing the stock markets:

Ah yes, if everyone was sick all a at once… what does he think that would look like? I’m sure the health care system could really handle that and the death rate wouldn’t be A LOT higher or anything.

This might not be a thoughtful, contemplative man you should trust with your financial decisions.

When the hospital rooms get rationed, the death rate is going to be lot higher. There may be only 20% who admit symptoms who need the hospital, but what country has that many resources all at once?

I’d hate to be on the board deciding who gets treatment to save them and who doesn’t.

If more die, aren’t those folks consumers too? Won’t that affect the market (and housing, etc) worse?

USA - 68 new cases in a day for a total of 226 including evacuees. 1 new death for a total of 12.

CHINA - 143 (126 Hubei) new cases for a total of 80,552 and 30 (29 Hubei) new deaths for total of 3,042.

Beijing reported four new cases of coronavirus on March 5, all imported from Italy

SOUTH KOREA - 663 new cases in 24 hours for a total of 6,284 and 7 new deaths for a total of 42.

Hospitals in Daegu were scrambling to accommodate the surge in patients, with 2,300 people waiting to be admitted.

JAPAN - 33 new cases for a total of 364.

COSTA RICA - 1st confirmed case, a woman who had traveled to Italy and Tunisia.

It’s amazing how many visitors northern Italy had last month from all over the world. And it’s not even peak summer travel.

Realize there are people out there with special needs but figured they would have been warned off by:

Should I have put exclamation marks around it?

At least some NYS colleges (public and private) are requiring students who travel to level 2 or 3 countries over spring break to self-quarantine for 14 days (not on school property) before they return to campus. If your country is level 1 now but jumps to 2 or 3 before you return, you’re required to self-quarantine. But I don’t know if it’s based on the student’s country of citizenship or what country they were last in before flying to the US. If they’re from a level 3 country but fly to a level 1 first could they enter with no restrictions? I don’t know.

A friend posted a letter from her dentist office on FB. It asked that anyone who has traveled to China, Japan, Korea, Italy…and Washington State…please reschedule your appointment for three weeks after you return.

Washington State?

Make that 2 confirmed Colorado cases.

Colorado reports first two cases of coronavirus
"…We don’t know much about the second case yet: Polis said he received word of the second case while preparing for a news conference about the first case.

“We hope to have details on that later today,” he said." (CNN)

I watched the press conference regarding the MD cases. They are still in the investigative phase so would not divulge much detail. They would not say where the three people had traveled but apparently, they had returned from international travel on February 20. On March 3rd, they were notified (can’t remember by which agency) that they had possibly been exposed and were asked to get tested. They were tested yesterday and the results came back today as positive. They have been at home since being tested. They are working with health officials to retrace where they have been over the course of the 12 days since they had been back from their trip. Once that investigative process is complete, it sounds like more details will be released.

Northern Italy is a popular skiing destination.

Is anything known about what is going on in Wuhan now? Are people still quarantined 24/7? Is there any plan of letting people out?

Does anyone know how many people in Wuhan had mild version of the virus but never went to a hospital?
