I dont have a clue about medical things, but this was shared on another forum I read.

Findings Of the 99 patients with 2019-nCoV pneumonia, 49 (49%) had a history of exposure to the Huanan seafood
market. The average age of the patients was 55·5 years (SD 13·1), including 67 men and 32 women. 2019-nCoV was
detected in all patients by real-time RT-PCR. 50 (51%) patients had chronic diseases. Patients had clinical manifestations
of fever (82 [83%] patients), cough (81 [82%] patients), shortness of breath (31 [31%] patients), muscle ache
(11 [11%] patients), confusion (nine [9%] patients), headache (eight [8%] patients), sore throat (five [5%] patients),
rhinorrhoea (four [4%] patients), chest pain (two [2%] patients), diarrhoea (two [2%] patients), and nausea and vomiting
(one [1%] patient). According to imaging examination, 74 (75%) patients showed bilateral pneumonia, 14 (14%)
patients showed multiple mottling and ground-glass opacity, and one (1%) patient had pneumothorax. 17 (17%) patients
developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and, among them, 11 (11%) patients worsened in a short period of time
and died of multiple organ failure.
Where are you located?
Reportedly, tiny Papa New Guinea isn’t letting ANYONE from an asian country in.
@cbreeze - My D is at Purdue. Here’s the article from the W. Lafayette paper: https://www.jconline.com/story/news/2020/01/28/purdue-tippecanoe-county-health-department-monitoring-coronavirus-no-cases-reported/4596834002/
Dual US-German citizen who is a student in Wuhan.
"The U.S. embassy offered him a $1,100 seat on a charter flight, he said.
But an embassy official told him he would have to get himself to the airport on the other side of Wuhan, 30 miles (48 km) away, he said. With most transportation down, he found no way to make the trip, and an embassy staff member told him that they would give his seat to someone else, Schneider said.
“I couldn’t believe what I just heard. That’s not how you deal with a citizen in need … it seemed like she didn’t care,” Schneider said."
“Schneider, who has lived most of his life in Germany, then turned to German embassy officials, who he said promised him a bus ride to the airport with several other stranded students and seat on a flight to Germany on Saturday.”
How different colleges are responding
I saw someone wearing a mask today in NYC. When I was heading home there was a an Asian guy one row away from me (with a very nice ink painting) who had a horrible cough. I felt a bit guilty, but I moved away.
I wouldn’t feel one bit guilty. I have done the same when there have been no pandemics present. Who wants to get sick??
I fly a lot so I just ordered an N99 mask in case the person next to me on the plane is sick. But still not sure if I want to be “that guy” on the plane wearing a mask.
@anomander My husband flew to FL yesterday, and there were quite a few people wearing masks. I think you’ll have company on your next flight.
Papua New Guinea is bigger than California and has 9 million people, so it’s not “tiny” among countries.
Ok, not so tiny Papua New Guinea isn’t letting ANYONE from an asian country in.
From an NBC article on the Americans flying home:
“Some of those expected on the flight from Wuhan were not allowed to board because they did not have documents they needed to enter the U.S. and one person with a fever was also denied boarding, Braden said.”
No surprise to see fear drive this type of behavior but seems alarmist and definitely unfortunate:

Early Transmission Dynamics in Wuhan, China, of Novel Coronavirus–Infected Pneumonia
BACKGROUND
The initial cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)–infected pneumonia (NCIP) occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in December 2019 and January 2020. We analyzed data on the first 425 confirmed cases in Wuhan to determine the epidemiologic characteristics of NCIP.
METHODS
We collected information on demographic characteristics, exposure history, and illness timelines of laboratory-confirmed cases of NCIP that had been reported by January 22, 2020. We described characteristics of the cases and estimated the key epidemiologic time-delay distributions. In the early period of exponential growth, we estimated the epidemic doubling time and the basic reproductive number.
RESULTS
Among the first 425 patients with confirmed NCIP, the median age was 59 years and 56% were male. The majority of cases (55%) with onset before January 1, 2020, were linked to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, as compared with 8.6% of the subsequent cases. The mean incubation period was 5.2 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 4.1 to 7.0), with the 95th percentile of the distribution at 12.5 days. In its early stages, the epidemic doubled in size every 7.4 days. With a mean serial interval of 7.5 days (95% CI, 5.3 to 19), the basic reproductive number was estimated to be 2.2 (95% CI, 1.4 to 3.9).
CONCLUSIONS
On the basis of this information, there is evidence that human-to-human transmission has occurred among close contacts since the middle of December 2019. Considerable efforts to reduce transmission will be required to control outbreaks if similar dynamics apply elsewhere. Measures to prevent or reduce transmission should be implemented in populations at risk. (Funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and others.)
Daily tally update:
7,158 confirmed cases and 170 deaths in China with a global total of 7,251 cases.
It’s not so much about eating than it is about hand washing, not spitting on the street, etc.
The secret formula of hand washing ( and using soap )… maybe we should get the Harvard chemistry chief to write a memo about it.
Also, minimizing exposure to crowds and being able to isolate ill people from others , particularly when seeking medical care.
Photos/videos I’ve seen of crowds of people at hospitals attempting to get medical attention are definitely concerning, whether masks are worn or not.
It’s good that folks are trying to self-isolate while they wait the virus out.
---- Okay, but what you just described is the droplet transmission mode, not the airborne transmission mode. ----
Which is what I understand the transmission method of coronavirus to be.
I’ve also seen a number of reports that somewhere in their body suggest it’s airborne. Go so far as to almost flat out say so. On the other hand, I also something in the WSJ referring to it as the Wuhan flu.
You eventually get to the point that you realize not everything you read can be true. Actually, most of it probably doesn’t stand much chance of being correct, if you read enough.
Thanks.
Japan has reported that out of the 206 citizens evacuated on a flight on Wednesday (Tuesday our time), 3 have tested positive for the virus.
Just another thing to keep in mind about China’s medical system. It does not have primary care MDs, so when folks need care, they go to the hospitals and line up—from the crack of dawn and wait to be seen.
Before this new coronavirus, providers were normally seeing and treating about 200 patients—numbers of people seeking care have increased since this novel virus. Having all those people waiting in close proximity in line while some/many may be infectious is problematic, to put it mildly.
