New California coronavirus case may be linked to AIPAC Policy Conference

From CNN

"A new case of coronavirus has been identified in Los Angeles County, according to a press release from the county’s Department of Public Health.

The person who tested positive recently attended the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington D.C., where they may have been exposed.

Earlier this week, AIPAC organizers said two conference attendees from New York tested positive for coronavirus.

There are now 14 coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County, the release said."

…which you have no problem attending sight unseen

The newest person who is infected is a community physician who made rounds at Bridgeport Hospital, according to Governor Ned Lamont.

The doctor saw a limited number of patients at Bridgeport Hospital and did not show signs or symptoms of coronavirus while working…the hospital took the small number of patients who were exposed to the doctor and isolated them as a precaution.

The Centers for Disease Control is now advising that the isolation was not necessary because the doctor did not have symptoms while at Bridgeport Hospital, Diamond added.

The physician is also a New York State resident who works in Connecticut, Lamont added.

“Bridgeport Hospital officials were in direct communication with the Connecticut Department of Public Health when they were made aware of this positive case. The physician did not show signs or symptoms when he worked with patients at Bridgeport Hospital and the risk to staff and patients remains low,” Lamont said in a release.

Staff at Bridgeport Hospital will not require isolation or furlough given the nature of the encounter, but the hospital is asking all staff to self monitor for symptoms, Diamond added.

This marks the second New York state resident who works in Connecticut testing positive for coronavirus.

On Friday, a hospital employee who is a New York resident and works at Danbury Hospital and Norwalk Hospital also tested positive for COVID-19.

She lives in Westchester County and is currently there under self-quarantine, according to the governor. The positive coronavirus test was performed in New York state. She was originally tested Wednesday but the results just came back late Friday.

“We believe she was infected in New York,” said Chief Operating Officer of Danbury Hospital Kerry Eaton.

Renee Coleman-Mitchell, the commissioner of the state Department of Public Health, said both the cases on Friday and Saturday do not officially count as Connecticut cases.

Coronavirus Testing Underway in Connecticut
Connecticut has tested 42 specimens from 21 patients at the state lab with all the tests coming back negative, according to Coleman-Mitchell, the commissioner of the state Department of Public Health. At least 9 more specimens from patients are awaiting testing.

The state currently has one coronavirus test kit, which can support 600 tests, Coleman-Mitchell said. The state has a request in for an additional kit with the hopes of securing it next week."

There’s Egypt popping up again!

VP Mike Pence announces changes to cruise line industry to fight coronavirus

"There will be enhanced entry and exit screening for cruise passengers, as well as on-board testing for coronavirus, Pence said. There will also be new quarantine standards for those who took a cruise and need to be quarantined, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will coordinate.

The cruise line industry is working with the CDC, Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard over the next 72 hours to implement the plans.

When asked about reports that he may have come into contact with an infected individual at a conference in Washington earlier this month, Pence said he has “not been tested for the coronavirus.”

“We were able to confirm that I did not come in contact with that young person and we wish them and their family a swift recovery,” Pence said." (CNN)

8 more cases in Santa Clara County (aka Silicon Valley) for a total of 28, according to Santa Clara County Department of Health.

Stanford has canceled classes.

Google, Facebook & Twitter have told employees to work at home if they can. Both companies are paying their contract workers (eg food service and sanitation workers) their hourly wage, even though there is no work for them.

The jerks at SAP Center (the Shark Tank), where the Sharks play, are continuing to to put on large events where disease can be spread. With 28 known infections, we can guess there are at least ten times as many unknown. Statistically, then, we can expect a crowd of 20,000 in Santa Clara County to contain at least one infected person. Yay.

Ok. so I was in Seattle 8 days ago. I feel like I might be coming down with a cold, with a soreish throat, headache, and tireness the last few days. maybe coughed just a couple of times. No fever. I have a kid home for spring break. (I am staying as far away as I can). Normally I would not think twice, and just think , yes, just getting a cold or something similar. Now I have to wonder if I have a mild version of the new coronavirus. With lack of the amount of tests, if I call my Dr. what would be the likely hood I would get tested if things remained non critical? Would having been in Seattle 8 days ago be enough. I am trying to currently self isolate at home , but I was out and about earlier this week , including a work conference late in the week. I am driving myself crazy and the fact that there is still not enough testing kits out there. What if by a rare chance, yes, I have a mild case, whom have I infected? Whom now has to self quarantine. This is really a can of worms.

** New York confirms 13 more new cases **

FDA head says 2.1 million tests will ship to labs by Monday

"The head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that materials for 2.1 million coronavirus tests will have been shipped to non-public U.S. labs by Monday, as the Trump administration aims to counter criticism that its response to the disease has been sluggish.

Stephen Hahn, the FDA commissioner, told reporters at the White House that manufacturers have told the agency they believe that by the end of next week they could scale up to a capacity of 4 million additional tests." (CNBC)

Every story on test kits has quotes from government officials that seem to be quoting different numbers.

Very unlikely. Across the entire US, as of yesterday less than 6000 people had been tested. If you don’t have serious symptoms and you haven’t been in contact with a person known to be infected, you’ll be at the bottom of a long, long list. And this is good-- we should be testing the people most likely to be infected before we test other people.

If I was you, I’d call my doctor and maybe your state health dept as well. With the Seattle connection. It could be other bugs but better safe than sorry. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Hey, but next week there will be 4.5 million tests available, or is 1.5 million or 750,000? Who knows?

Pennsylvania reports two new presumptive positive cases of coronavirus
From CNN

Pennsylvania announced two new presumptive positive cases of coronavirus Saturday, according to a press release from Gov. Tom Wolf.

“Both individuals are from Montgomery County, have mild symptoms, are in isolation at home and were exposed to an area of the United States where COVID-19 is present,” Wolf said in the release.

There are now four presumptive positive cases in Pennsylvania.

The other two cases are individuals from Delaware County and Wayne County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Both of those earlier cases are individuals with mild symptoms and are in isolation at home, Wolf said.

@sdl0625 Have you called your doctor? Hopefully she will know the most updated version of protocols. My hospital is doing video urgent care for coronavirus (and other illnesses.) It’s online so maybe you can use it too? It’s $60, probably covered by insurance.

If not, call urgent care.

As far as testing goes, I really think it depends which state you live in, @sdl0625. Definitely make the calls.

Kansas reports its first presumptive positive coronavirus case
From CNN

The first presumptive positive case of coronavirus was identified in Kansas on Saturday, according to a press release from Gov. Laura Kelly’s office.

The patient is a woman under the age of 50 from Johnson County, the release said.

She is home on self-isolation.

There is probably some work for the food service and sanitation workers, since not all employees can do all of their work from home. Also, unless some food service or other areas in the offices are completely closed, sanitation workers would still clean everything that any of the (perhaps few) employees still coming to the office may come into contact with.

Indeed, within any organization, there may be more sanitation work, if there is desire for wiping everything down with bleach and then wiping up the bleach or some such that is not normally done.

I thought they were completing classes this term online. Has that changed?
