Coronavirus in the US

I enjoyed reading this article about Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH’s institute for allergy and infectious disease. He has worked under six different presidents.

About the test kits,

There will be time later to study the response, learn from mistakes, and hopefully provide the funding needed to be more proactive next time. I think that Dr. Fauci is doing the right thing in focusing his energy right now on the goal of more testing and more data.

He is also 79 and only sleeps 5 hours a night, so I’m a bit worried about him (and everyone).

Good first step. Then make the imposition permanent. Hope other nations follow. Those mega cruise ships are a terrible idea and have brought a lot of misery to many a cruise stop.

How close are people getting at these conferences? Just shows you how transmittable Covid-19 is - that and all the taxi cab driver cases in Asia.

“Let me try again. The US government is acting imperfectly, motivated not only by public health concerns. In this regard, it is not better than the Chinese government.”
The only difference is, if you would have complained and posted something like that in China, well-meaning police people would have knocked at your door.
The CDC messed up and there is too much red tape which slowed the response and it is true we can’t build a hospital in seven days but we don’t have quarantine hotels collapsing on our heads either, the hospital rooms have soap and we have actual toilet seats in each apartment. I think, overall, will do much better than China.

For context on post #4543, Suffolk County is Boston, Norfolk and Middlesex are the suburbs just west of Boston.

Ugh, I’m getting nervous about our trip to France and Spain this summer. :frowning:

U.S. ride-hailing and food delivery companies to compensate drivers affected by coronavirus

(Reuters) - U.S. ride-hailing and food delivery companies including DoorDash Inc and Instacart are in discussions to compensate drivers and delivery personnel affected by the novel coronavirus.

DoorDash and Instacart are exploring options, the firms said on Sunday in separate statements.

A Lyft Inc spokeswoman said the company has decided to provide funds to drivers infected or quarantined by a public health authority. Uber said on Saturday it will offer compensation to drivers and delivery people diagnosed with the coronavirus or placed in quarantine for up to 14 days.

BANGLADESH - 1st three cases confirmed - the affected people, aged between 20 and 35, include two who returned home from Italy recently. The other was a family member of one of those two, she said. All in stable condition.

"An inmate died on Sunday after a riot at a prison in Modena [Italy] that broke out when detainees were informed that the new emergency decree bans visits and contacts between prisoners and their relatives in order to reduce infections.

Other jail riots were also sparked in Salerno and Frosinone when the news of the draft decree banning visits from relatives spread among inmates." (Guardian)

You just need to play it by ear right now.

CA Gov presser on Cruise ship to unload tomorrow in Oakland. Ill taken to local hospitals for quarantine. Other Californians to Travis AFB; most other US folks to Lackland or GA. Internationals to be tested and sent home by charter. (non-sick?) crew to remain on board and return the ship back to the ocean. Expect to complete process in 2-3 days.

Governor spoke positively of federal support, including WH & CDC.

Negative for flu. Doc said just a virus that needs to run its course.

No testing for covid and no real screening questions either. Just gave him a cough suppressant and said to stay home until 24 hours after fever.

No testing for COVID-19 - really, truly a surreal situation we are in. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to your H and for you to stay healthy.

Women more likely to survive coronavirus in China, studies find

But frontline female medical workers also report more symptoms of anxiety and depression, researchers say

Men suffer more physical effects, accounting for 70 per cent of death toll in one survey

"Women may be more likely to survive the deadly coronavirus, but they also appear to be more likely to have depression, anxiety and insomnia as they assume most of the burden of caring for patients, Chinese researchers have found.

The virus has caused less serious symptoms and lower mortality in women compared to men, according to two research papers by doctors working in the central Chinese city of Wuhan…yet to be peer reviewed. In one study of more than 1,000 patients …researchers found that men suffered more severe effects and were more likely to die, accounting for 70 per cent of the death toll, according to a study published on Thursday on medRxiv.org…“more likely to affect older males with comorbidities, and can result in severe and even fatal respiratory diseases”, the paper said… written by researchers from Wuhan Union Hospital and Beijing Tongren Hospital, who were sent by the central government to Hubei province to help control the epidemic.

An earlier study of 47 patients with coronavirus-induced severe pneumonia found that male patients were more likely to have prior lung disease, develop secondary infections, require complex treatments and experience worse outcomes.

During one two-week period, men accounted for over 83 per cent of those whose condition deteriorated from severe to critical. At the same time, men represented just 20 per cent of those released from hospital, according to the study posted on the same website on February 27.

A similar gender difference was reported during the 2002-03 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) but not with influenza, the researchers said.

…third study suggests that this year’s coronavirus epidemic has taken a heavier toll on the mental health of women caring for patients…Women respondents were 2.4 per cent more likely to report anxiety, 6.7 per cent more likely to say they were depressed and 4.4 per cent more likely to say they had insomnia than men. The survey was conducted last month and has been submitted to international medical journal The Lancet for peer review.

…more than 42,000 medical workers from across the country have been dispatched to the province {Hubei] so far. The NHC said about 28,000 of them were women."

Italian officials have confirmed the same - preponderance of fatalities among men.

As of now, if you have fever and muscle aches, assume worse case scenario until you can be tested, call work and self quarantine. Kick the rest of your family out of you little cave and work remotely or binge on Netflix. Once the big brother gives you the blessing, get tested. Of course, if nobody seems to care to the point where you are about to lose your job or default on your mortgage, drive yourself to the office of your representative and I bet testing will miraculously become available ( just kidding… ).
I made a cleaning solution by diluting bleach and will take one to the office tomorrow, since our environmental friendly cleaning supplies are not as effective.

No testing for covid and no real screening questions either. Just gave him a cough suppressant and said to stay home until 24 hours after fever.

So that’s how this will be handled for all of us who have these symptoms. It’s discouraging.

In better news, Seattle now has drive through testing for health care workers.

I’m sure the medical professionals and trained experts are fully aware of the covid 19 issues. It’s cold and flu season. We must have some level in trust in our experts.

We can’t possibly test 25 million (guess) people with these symptoms.

Bad cough and fever and no testing for Covid? That’s 2 out of 3 symptoms. Did he try and insist? I hope its just a standard virus.

Third UK death from coronavirus

A man in his 60s, who had underlying health problems, has become the third patient to die after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.

The man had recently returned from Italy and had significant underlying health conditions.

**Pennsylvania reports 2 new presumptive positive coronavirus cases, bringing statewide total to 6
From CNN

Pennsylvania announced two new presumptive positive cases of novel coronavirus in Montgomery County on Sunday, bringing the statewide total to six, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

There are currently four cases in Montgomery County, one case in Delaware County, and one in Wayne County, the health department said.

@sherimba03 the only screening question was whether or not he had been out of the country. No contacts, no asking about if anyone around him had symptoms, nothing.

He told them too that his wife was pregnant just in case there was anything in particular he or I should do. Nope.

I called my MFM too asking if I should come in tomorrow and they said as long as I’m not showing symptoms, it’s fine. Just grab a mask when I get to the hospital and to call them back if I start showing symptoms.

Poor Mr R is more worried about me and the baby than himself. He’s beating himself up for getting sick even though obviously there’s nothing he could’ve done to prevent it. He’s not paying attention to COVID at all so I’m guessing he was googling the whole time he was in the waiting room.

I hope he feels better soon!
