At some point the municipality needs grow a pair and step in and shut down events that are large. That’s what Austin did with SXSW.
I really cannot fathom why a test kit hasn’t been made available for each and every resident and employee at Kirkland.
If Santa Clara County shuts down mass gatherings, the city of San Jose (or Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino) doesn’t need to.
Things must truly be better in Wuhan.

“Wheel of Fortune” will be played without a studio audience due to coronavirus concerns
From CNN
A classic American television game show will go without a studio audience out of concern regarding the spread of coronavirus.
“Wheel of Fortune” will begin taping episodes without an audience indefinitely, a source close to the show tells CNN.
“Jeopardy,” which like “Wheel of Fortune” is produced by Sony, is considering a similar move, according to multiple reports. The hosts of both shows are in their 70s and have been battling health issues in recent months.
“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak, 73, underwent emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage in November.
“Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek, 79, is battling pancreatic cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, “cancer patients are among those at high risk of serious illness from an infection because their immune systems are often weakened by cancer and its treatments.”
The change marks the entertainment business’s latest response to the pandemic.
Movie premieres, concerts and high profile events like the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, have been canceled in recent weeks in response to the growing number of cases worldwide."
Such a sad situation in Washington.
My work has announced that we will all work remotely from now on (in California).
"U.S. President Donald Trump has not been tested for the coronavirus, the White House said on Monday, though at least two lawmakers with whom he has recently come into contact have announced they were self-quarantining after attending a conference with a person who had tested positive for the virus, Reuters reports.
“The President has not received Covid-19 testing because he has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed Covid-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms. President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him,” White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement. (Guardian)

Not all clinical trials are randomized, placebo-controlled! There are single arm trials, and there are trials comparing dosages. The severe cases will be all given the drug. The standard of care will be used as a control for moderate cases.
"Mongolia said on Tuesday that a French national working in the country has been confirmed to be infected with coronavirus, marking the country’s first case - a 57-year-old man, travelled to Mongolia from France and transited through Moscow. The government has identified 42 people the patient has met with and another 120 individuals who had close contact with the patient, who works for Badrakh Energy in southern Dornogovi province and is in stable condition.
Mongolia has suspended all local travel in Dornogovi province, the commission said.
The infection comes despite stringent border and travel controls imposed by Ulaanbaatar to keep out the virus.
Mongolia has halted border crossings from China, imposed travel bans on people from Japan and South Korea until March 11 and suspended schools through end-March.
Mongolian President Battulga Khaltmaa and other government officials submitted to a 14-day quarantine in late February after returning home from their visit to China as a precautionary measure." (Guardian)
All but four of Apple’s stores in mainland China have reopened
China is a crucial market for the iPhone maker — Apple previously warned it would not meet the already wider-than-usual revenue guidance it gave for the March quarter. Out of the 42 stores Apple has in mainland China, 38 of them are open again following a prolonged shutdown. Three stores in Tianjin, a major city in the northwest, and a retail location in a city west of Shanghai, remain closed. (CNBC)
If Mongolia has just had it’s first case I will eat my hat. I can’t imagine they have been doing a ton of testing.
They all should have been presumed positive. Sadly.
An elementary school student in California has contracted the coronavirus
From CNN
Sacramento County in Northern California announced that an elementary student has contracted the coronavirus there.
No other details were provided. A news conference scheduled at the school district today was canceled.
California has now identified 107 coronavirus patients and reported two deaths.
The cleaning company in my office building uses white vinegar to clean all surfaces. I thought I read somewhere that white vinegar does not kill coronavirus. Does anyone have a source for that?
3 new cases identified in the US capital
From CNN
Authorities in the District of Columbia have announced three new presumptive positive coronavirus cases.
The US capital has now confirmed four patients, but there are concerns the number could rise because the first patient was a church rector who gave Communion and shook hands with worshippers. Hundreds of people who were at the service, at Christ Church in the neighborhood of Georgetown, have been asked to self-quarantine.
The church’s organist also tested positive for the virus Monday evening, according to church parishioner Rob Volmer.
The Rev. Timothy Cole is hospitalized, Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a news conference Monday, referring to the man as “patient one.”
The three new patients identified were all men, ages 39, 77 and 79. The 39-year-old had attended Christ Church.
Contact tracing is underway for all of them.
A quarter of the 43 cases identified in Santa Clara County are in intensive care. That tells me there are a lot more unidentified cases, out there infecting people.
I was out on a bike ride today. Coming home, I didn’t realize it was rush hour, because there was no traffic. On the dot of 6 pm, I crossed over Highway 280, a busy commuting freeway that normally would be backed up. I’ve seen more cars there on a Saturday at 8 am.
How many ICU beds do you think SC even has?
Snohomish School District in WA closes schools, and some other schools are closed:
How many ICU beds are there in Santa Clara County?
It’s a county of two million people. I can think of four hospitals: Stanford, El Camino, Kaiser and Valley Med. Google tells me there’s also O’Connor Hospital. So, I guess ten people in intensive care isn’t a huge strain, yet. There were probably more than that in intensive care from the Gilroy shooting.
But the point here is that there are probably more than eight hundred cases in the county and we only know about 43 of them. Soon, the hospitals will start to fill up.

"U.S. President Donald Trump has not been tested for the coronavirus, the White House said on Monday
He probably asked for one and got told he doesn’t meet CDC guidelines for testing.
