Coronavirus in the US

Yes, Shanghai.

The World Health Organisation on Friday cautioned that closing borders was probably ineffective in halting the transmission of the deadly novel coronavirus from China and could even accelerate its spread.

If you close official border crossings, you can ā€œlose track of people and cannot monitor (their movement) anymoreā€, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva.

"But as we know from other scenarios, be it Ebola or other cases whenever people want to travel,… if the official paths are not open, they will find inofficial paths.

ā€œBut the only way to control, to check fever for example, to identified travel history, to try to monitor who’s coming across the border, and to see whether they have any signs of infection is through official border crossing points,ā€ he said.

ā€œThis is a huge reason to keep official border crossing points open.ā€

@HImom - I know, it’s scary. It sounds to me like there may be (many) infected people who don’t know they’re contagious and who unknowingly spread the virus. I’m just saying, if you DO feel sick - stay home!

And yes, it does give one a false sense of security in airport screeners who are targeting those with a fever, if those who are infected can spread the virus without any outward symptoms.

I’m going to suggest that my workplace close down until this whole coronavirus thing is over - just to be sure. Yeah, right…

Some fascinating tidbits in the NYT article, for example, ā€œOver all, China has about four times as many train and air passengers as it did during SARS outbreakā€. Wow.

OTOH I was comforted by the picture of the subway car.

Employers are often scornful of folks taking off because they don’t feel 100%, so many workers are wary of appearing to be shirkers which contributes to folks coming to work when they aren’t feeling good/borderline sick.

^^^ Not our company.

The person who works in the office next to mine just returned from visiting China, and we were all glad when he decided to work from home for the next two weeks.

Valid but SARS mortality rate was over 9%!

What is the CDC doing to warn people who may have had contact with a coronavirus patient? I have heard nothing so far.

For example, the woman who flew into Chicago after visiting Wuhan. Were the other passengers on her flight warned? Were other people she may have come in contact with at work or otherwise warned?

Now her husband has it. Were people at his workplace warned? Etc. etc.

It just seems very odd to me that when a measles patient walks through LAX, the news media comes out with a warning to the effect that ā€˜if you were in the Bradley terminal on X date and are not vaccinated be aware of signs of measles’. They have also reported when the measles carrier has gone to the movies or to Starbucks and so forth.

The spread of measles is much less worrisome because most people are or can be vaccinated.

If someone could explain the ā€˜logic’ if there is any, I would like to hear it.

I did read somewhere today that over 100 people are currently being monitored by the CDC in IL.

^^ I’d heard that about 100 people under surveillance, but this article says it’s currently 21 people in the Chicago area.

Also says that the Chicago couple’s grandson is now hospitalized with a fever.

I was on an internal video call recently talking to a group of 3 colleagues who were in a conference room together. One was coughing and just 2 minutes into the meeting the two other attendees, both managers, were all, ā€œwth, why are you in the office infecting people? I don’t want your germs! Go home now!ā€

It was both funny and nice to see. And yeah, they were using pretty strong language in forceful terms.

Yes, folks can get a lot of work done remotely without infecting others if workplace allows it.

Wash your hands folks. It is the best defense says the doc who was working to halt the SARS outbreak.

7th confirmed case in Germany, all related to the woman visiting their company. Fair amount of spread for someone not showing any symptoms.

From the article:

ā€œEarlier on Friday, authorities identified the sixth victim as the child of a male employee at the same company.ā€

@xanthippe Is your family still trying to decide?

Just announced. No foreign nationals who have been to China in the past 14 days will be allowed entry into US. Exception for immediate family of US citizens.

^Also, formal public health emergency declared in US. and:

"The new restrictions begin Sunday afternoon. Americans returning from Hubei province, the center of the outbreak, will be required to undergo 14 days of quarantine.

Others returning from elsewhere in China will be allowed to self-monitor their condition for a similar period."

What do you think about this?

ā€œMore than 15,000 medical workers in Hong Kong announced this week their newly-formed union will go on strike unless the border to China is completely sealed to prevent the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.ā€

Things like this and the response for the US govt and other governments must be frustrating WHO right now.

Do we know how the patients in the US are doing?

No reports that I have seen nor has the number of confirmed cases changed.

So far, only deaths from this virus have all been in China.
