Coronavirus in the US

The ER I’m in is completely packed, mostly with people waiting for rooms.

And we’re not widespread yet. I think people who don’t realize how bad it can be haven’t spent a lot of time in our ERs lately. We’re grossly under prepared.

Eta: by completely packed i mean the hallways are filled with beds too.

Are you ok? How’s your husband?

@romanigypsyeyes I think it is time for you to go home. You’ll be safer there than with germy people all around you.

Yes, I’m afraid we are woefully under-prepared as a nation. Most of the times I’ve been in ERs, they’ve been packed and the triage is such that the folks having trouble breathing , chest pain, copious bleeding are 1st. The rest wait and wait and wait.

Our state doesn’t even have enough lung docs period and definitely not enough on our neighbor islands. This COVID-19 often turns into pneumonia. Lung docs and respiratory therapists will have to be doing a lot. I don’t believe we have enough of either in my state.

I can totally see some doomsday financial “news articles.” Not going to post any links. There is a way to make boatload of money in the tanking market - by making short sales. Short sellers need to maintain uncertainty and panic so they can cover at a lower price.

Trump expected to lay out “path” out of coronavirus crisis tonight, source says
From CNN’s Jim Acosta

President Trump will lay out a “path” out of the coronavirus crisis, a source familiar with the Oval Office address told CNN.

Trump is expected to explain that “the crisis isn’t America’s doing but America is taking the proper course,” according to the source who was read in on some of the language in the address but cautioned that the remarks are still being tweaked.

The President’s expected description of the crisis, the source said, is an indication that Trump will likely note that the virus was first detected in China. Trump made note of this during his meeting with banking executives earlier today.

The source said the White House is hoping Trump will come across as something of a “CEO” in the speech. But the source noted this is a critical moment for Trump.

“These TV moments define a presidency,” the source said.
A White House official says Trump will outline his economic stimulus proposals and will look to put forward a message of “unity” in the face of this crisis.

The President is expected to address the nation at 9 p.m. ET.

[ Everyone knows where the virus came from - why the need to state the obvious? Leave global politics aside (and he has said this repeatedly and consistently) and address the problem at hand ]

US official says China’s response to coronavirus cost the world “two months to respond”
From CNN

Robert O’Brien, President Trump’s national security adviser, blasted the Chinese government for their response to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, saying they “covered up” the outbreak and “probably” cost the world “two months to respond.”

“There’s lots of open source reporting from China, from Chinese nationals that the doctors involved were either silenced or, or put in isolation or that sort of thing so word of this virus could not get out,” O’Brien told a crowd at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

“If we had those and been able to sequence the virus and had the cooperation necessary from the Chinese, had a WHO team been on the ground, had a CDC team which we’d offered been on the ground, I think we could’ve dramatically curtailed what happened both in China and what’s now happening across the world,” he continued.

O’Brien also urged Americans to heed the warnings of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention and take precautions to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

“If you’ve got a coworker who sneezes, send them home,” he said, adding that people should practice social distancing, wash their hands routinely, and take other protective measures.

O’Brien, whose speech notably drew a smaller-than-usual crowd amid fears of crowded places, described the President’s response to the outbreak in the US as “courageous,” particularly for his decision to temporarily freeze air travel to highly affected areas.

[ Again, I don’t get the need to play the ‘blame game’ right now. I should be all hands on deck looking for our way out of the current crisis, not presenting to the crowd at the Heritage Foundation. Priorities. Priorities. ]

^Some people always try to cover up their own failures. Instead of taking responsibilities, they look to shift the blame.

Sigh. It’s so frustrating to hear misinformation.

Don’t worry we’re leaving now. Just waiting on valet.

I was in an isolation room with a droplet warning thing so I was pretty well protected thankfully. But it was luck of timing and being very high priority that got me in there.

Amazon and Gates Foundation may team up to deliver coronavirus test kits to Seattle homes

Amazon Care, the company’s virtual medical clinic for employees, is in talks with local public health organizations about using its logistics expertise to help deliver at-home coronavirus testing kits to people’s homes in the Seattle area.

The discussions have been going on for more than a week, say three people with knowledge of the plans. The people declined to share their names because Amazon Care’s involvement is still confidential, and they have not been authorized to do so.

Specifically, Amazon Care has offered the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation its assistance with a project that aims to provide kits to Seattle residents who suspect they have symptoms of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The test kits include nose swabs that can be mailed to the University of Washington for analysis. (CNBC)

Horrible! I’m sorry.

Up to 150 million Americans are expected to contract the coronavirus, congressional doctor says

Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending physician of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court, said he expects 70 million to 150 million people in the United States will become infected with COVID-19, NBC News reported, citing two sources.

Monahan made the comments to Senate staff during a closed-door meeting Tuesday afternoon, according to NBC News. The meeting did not include senators and was for administrative office staff and personnel from both parties, NBC News reported. (CNBC)

Opps, that was a typo. Not 80%. 20% of those who get it will be hospitalized.

Apologies if this has already been posted – there’s a new article in The Lancet today, “Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a retrospective cohort study”

I haven’t read it yet, will come back & summarize high points if there seems to be anything new or different.

The problem with bashing China is that China is likely the country that will come up with a remedy (like Tamiflu, for example) and/or vaccine, and they may not share it with us quickly if we tick them off. Also, we are dependent on them for the components of most of our medications.

Everyone knows where the disease came from. What we want is leadership, clear instructions for our health care professions and concise information. And some empathy would be nice.

Touting of horns before this even starts is not what we want to hear. Just as an FYI - Italy closed their borders to China on the same day as us. Then they ignored symptoms and protocols for weeks - and didn’t test. Like Us. See where they are now.

Actually, Italy has tested - tons. They also sent supplies to China. Now, China is helping them sending a team of experts and supplies. Italy did not poke the bear in childish ways. It’s called diplomacy. Yet, our own Secretary of State repeatedly makes jabs at China. Not cool and not a good strategy, short game or long game.

they tested like crazy after Patient 1 (38 year old healthy man) went to the hospital 3 times (Feb 18/19 time frame), but they did not test much before then. That’s why it spread so bad.

Posting this link again for those who may have missed it in this fast moving thread. Very good non-partisan explanation of what happened in Italy:

Wow, the Jazz and Thunder were just about to play an NBA game (had finished warmups) when it was suddenly called off and all the fans were told to leave. Not clear if it’s coronavirus related, but I’m sure that’s the concern.
