I live in a state with currently fewer than 10 identified cases.
I felt really sad this afternoon in the grocery store. There was a lovely elderly couple with a heaping full cart, wearing gloves, helping each other through the shopping. I hate to think that they are already feeling so stressed about this.
I hope the airlines had enough of a heads up about this that they are able to bring on more staff. My friendâs son is in Europe and trying to get a ticket home but the phone lines are full.
She and I were brainstorming about him flying to Aruba from Amsterdam and on to the US on an American carrier. I can feel pretty certain were are not the only ones thinking this way.
It wouldâve taken 1/2 the time to get me tested today (with results!) at the ER than it did to decide I didnât need to be tested - after meeting with the infectious disease expert, who then consulted with the hospitalâs public health team, which then consulted with the CDC who decided that I wasnât high risk enough because I couldnât prove contact with someone whoâs recently traveled or with the virus.
My state has, I think, 3 confirmed cases. Several dozen people have been tested. Thatâs it because of how strict the rationing is.
Banning travel isnât going to do much of anything if we canât test people on a large scale. Itâs really that simple.
The entire world has this virus. It would make more sense to ban all foreign nationals of any country - like Italy did. Why does the UK get a pass? They have open borders with Europe (Brexit hasnât been implemented yet). Their numbers are on par with most European countries. Italians canât travel here anyway. How about Japan? Fine to come here? This was strictly imposed to fulfill a narrative.
Yes very unfortunate. This is the case I mentioned upthread that could potentially impact DS18âs school. Doctor returned asymptomatic and went to work at the hospital on Monday. On Tuesday she developed symptoms and went home. Testing came back positive. The day she was at the hospital she saw various patients and interacted with other staff. Scary thing is that this is a cancer specialty hospital so the patients are especially vulnerable. As for DSâs school, some nursing students have their placements there and other students volunteer. Iâve got my fingers crossed that nothing comes of it.
The Pelicans - Kings game was the only NBA game today besides the Jazz - Thunder game today that had not yet started when the Jazz - Thunder game was postponed. The other games today were either completed or in the later stages of the game.
I am staying home. I have cancelled two domestic trips now. I wish everyone would limit travel for the good of the herd. The more social distancing we all do, the faster this nightmare will be over.
Guyana confirms first case of coronavirus in woman who returned from U.S.
Guyana on Wednesday confirmed its first case of coronavirus infection in a Guyanese woman who died after returning to the South American country last week from the United States, according to a statement from the president. (Reuters)
Stanford University confirms two more cases of coronavirus
Stanford University, in Californiaâs Santa Clara County, has confirmed two new cases of the coronavirus â one from Stanford Medicine and another case from the main campus.
A faculty member of Stanford Medicine was also confirmed with a case of coronavirus last week, bringing the universityâs total to three cases, Stanford said in a letter to its community.
Stanford and health officials are now working to conduct contact tracing on the patients. The letter added that the university would not provide additional information on the patients to protect their privacy.
Stanford is holding online classes: The university canceled all in-person classes for the final two weeks of its winter quarter, and will continue with online classes during the spring quarter.
Stanford is also asking students who live on campus to leave at the end of the quarter if possible.
This comes as a wave of universities across the nation enact similar measures. Harvard University, for instance, gave students five days to move out of their dorms â sparking panic and anger among some students, who complained of inadequate administration support.
[ and this is why colleges closing down isnât a bad idea. Itâs not a good place to quarantine everyone ]
Itâs tough for our state because since itâs international, we have to wait for contact tracing and to try to guess where she may have contracted it. I believe we have to have CDC contact their govt.
Itâs the 1st clear case of community transmission in our state. No cases in her Canadian area until her.
Itâs the 4th case linked to our state. 2 people came to HI and were diagnosedâone infected on cruise, one from state of WA. One tourist was here and then back in Japan was diagnosed but not clear whether he was ill and asymptomatically incubating while here.
No word on how Rudy Gobert (the player in question) was exposed to the virus, but since NBA players fly in chartered airplanes, ride chartered buses, stay in hotels, and eat in restaurants when going to away games, there are plenty of ways for them to get exposed if previous guests in those airplanes, buses, hotels, and restaurants left virus there.
Well I have an unplanned trip (flying) on my calendar nowâŠmoving my Dâs stuff out of her college (mandatory by next Wednesday). Lots of parents in a similar situation.
A part-time usher who recently worked at two Broadway theaters has tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, prompting a scramble to inform the public and clean the buildings, according to the theater owners.
The usher worked March 3 to March 7 at performances of a revival of âWhoâs Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,â now in previews at the 766-seat Booth Theater, starring Laurie Metcalf and Rupert Everett. Before that, the usher helped manage lines outside two performances of âSix,â a British musical about the wives of Henry VIII, on the evening of Feb. 25 and before the matinee of March 1. That show is now in previews at the 1,031-seat Brooks Atkinson Theater. (NY Times)
Thereâs now-disturbing video of Rudy Gobert doing this a few days ago: âAt a press conference Monday, Gobert attempted to make a point about overreaction and fear by touching everything in sight before he left. He leaned over and touched all of the microphones and recorders.â
Itâs not just the UK. As more details come out, the ban is only Schengen countries. So other countries such as Ireland, Croatia, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia and more are not included. The Acting Secretary of DHS put out this statement saying heâll have more details within 48 hours. The ban is supposed to start in less than 48 hours.
If they canât check people who have been arriving in the past few days from the biggest hot spot in the world right now, Iâm not really confident they will be able to track folks coming in from a connecting country which will, once again, make it a bit of a farce.
European officials say they were blindsided by Trumpâs new travel restrictions
From CNN
Europe appears to have been largely blindsided by President Trumpâs announcement earlier today that the US was suspending travel from 26 European countries.
Several European ambassadors in Washington tell CNN they didnât know this was coming, despite having been in contact with the administration over the past few days.
One ambassador in DC said there was âno indicationâ Trump would go to the lengths he did, while another spokesperson said German officials had no advanced warning this was coming.
âWe knew something was coming on travel from Europe (more restrictive travel advice) but not this drastic," the Belgian ambassador told CNN. "What is not understandable is the exception for the UK and the lack of national measures [domestically].â
The Trump administration notified ambassadors after the announcement: Several European ambassadors expressed a need for clarity as they worked to digest what these new measures mean. They had received calls from the State Department after the announcement â but they "have not yet answers to our questions,â said one ambassador.
State Department officials say they didnât know precisely what Trump was going to roll out, given the fact that multiple options were on the table.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the Australian Foreign Minister less than five hours before Trumpâs address â and gave no indication of the announcement coming tonight, according to a source familiar with the meeting.
Pompeo did acknowledge that things were going to continue to be painful, and increasingly so, for the next six weeks or so.
^^Have empty boxes delivered to her, including wardrobe boxes. Most colleges have a university PO to mail it home. Or have UPS pick it up. Or have a local self-storage company pick it up. (she could pack a POD if she has too much and have that stored) Once I called the hotel we usually stayed in and they arranged storage for me⊠an employee just did it free-lance.
I think it should cost less than a parent flying in.
Also, what are they going to do if students leave possessions in their rooms under the circumstances. Just tell her to get her valuables.
