Coronavirus in the US

There’s a lot of generalized fear among the US public. I’m in a city without a diagnosed case within a thousand miles but when I was in the local CVS a few day ago I noticed a large stretch of one shelf was empty. I was curious so I checked-yup, it was the shelf that had contained all the surgical masks and gloves…

This is what makes me nervous. If it takes 2 weeks to see if someone is infected, how does just coming in and “checking” a cruise ship work?

Anyone read about the Anthem in Bayonne yet? https://abc7news.com/5910452/

I’m so happy we had previously decided to nix the idea of a cruise this summer.

I saw on the news that they now suspect the host animal for the virus is the anteater. Apparently, anteaters are considered a delicacy in China and some other Asian countries.

I questioned the same. My guess was that it is too early. If it takes two weeks to develop the symptom and another 9 days to get really sick and a few more days to get well, it would mean almost a month from the time of infection to discharge.

so are they letting all of the passengers off of the ship in Bayonne?
does that sound like a good idea? (I’m not thinking so)

The article I read this morning didn’t say they are letting them off. Just that they are sending Chinese nationals without symptoms back to China. There were suspected cases, and they sent them to a local hospital. From that account, it doesn’t sound like they are letting everyone off. They will be quarantined until the test comes back and go from there, I would guess.

As much as I’ve enjoyed our cruises over the last few years, I’m really glad we had already decided not to go on one this year.

Interesting, I don’t get the sense of much fear in our community, and we were one of the first towns with a confirmation (in Orange County, CA). While the health department never released any details, the local community blogs were all over it, including the hospital to which he was admitted.

well according to Fox and Friends, the passengers are off the boat and heading home.

Boat is being fumigated for another cruise in a few days.

Makes me very nervous - as I live in NJ

Well, if it’s on Fox and Friends, it must be true.?

Yes, they’re off the ship. The 27 Chinese nationals were tested and none showed any symptoms. None were from Wuhan. None have tested positive. They have not been to China in nearly 2 weeks.

Four have been put in isolation at a hospital because one tested positive for the flu and the other 3 were connected to them.

The other 23 are on/waiting for flights back to China at the airport.

Fox is fear-mongering against Chinese individuals. At least one Chinese-American has been physically attacked and many more are being harassed merely because they are Asian American.

Artist, I think watching Fox has made you far more nervous than necessary. Maybe you should stop watching? Just a suggestion to calm your fears

Better safe than sorry I guess, although I certainly didn’t run out and buy anything but, heck, I don’t prepare for snowstorms either so I’m not the model of a boy scout. There will always be those that like to be prepared and those that like to be overly prepared - preppers, Y2Kers, Mormons with their 2 year stockpile.

The whistleblower doctor first showed symptoms on January 10th and died yesterday, so yes, it does seem to take awhile in some cases. For that reason, and the long incubation period, some experts are saying that despite quarantine efforts, we might not see a drop off in levels until April/May.

DH talks about stockpiling supplies sometimes. I say, “If things get that bad, I don’t think a stockpile will help that much.”

Coronavirus nurse describes ‘heartbreaking’ job

"Hong Kong has begun a mandatory quarantine of two weeks for anyone arriving from mainland China, in fresh efforts to contain the new coronavirus.

Visitors must isolate themselves in hotel rooms or go to government-run centres, while returning Hong Kong residents must stay inside their homes.

Anyone caught flouting the new rules faces a fine and a prison sentence.

Tens of thousands of travellers queued at the Chinese border city of Shenzhen ahead of the midnight deadline."

This is why, as harsh as it sounds, implementing an immediate, no notice quarantine might be more beneficial.

On the whistleblower death, from BBC:

"Analysts say it is hard to recall an event in recent years that has triggered as much online grief, rage and mistrust against the Chinese government.

The top two trending hashtags on Chinese social media site Weibo were “Wuhan government owes Dr Li Wenliang an apology” and “We want freedom of speech”.

Both hashtags were quickly censored. When the BBC searched Weibo on Friday, hundreds of thousands of comments had been wiped. Only a handful remain."

I don’t stock pile for an emergency itself but I may consider stock piling to use after the emergency has passed. Usually, the shelves are empty when I go shopping afterwards…

"Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director general…said there had been “widespread inappropriate use” of the equipment outside of patient care and praised suppliers who had decided to only issue stock to medical professionals.

He told a press conference: "This situation has been exacerbated by widespread, inappropriate use of PPE outside patient care.

"As a result, there are now depleted stockpiles and backlogs of four to six months.

“Global stocks of masks and respirators are now insufficient to meet the needs of WHO and our partners.”" (Independent UK)

Singapore raised alert level sparks panic-buying

"Singapore’s decision to raise its coronavirus alert level has sparked panic-buying across the island.

As Singapore’s infected tally hit 33, the alert level was raised to orange - a level reached during the 2003 SARS outbreak and the 2009 H1N1 influenza - which indicates the virus is severe and passes easily between people.

Videos posted on social media show long queues and empty shelves at supermarkets on the island." (Independent UK)

3 more cases were confirmed in Singapore without know ties to China.

Italy has one new confirmed case from an evacuee.
