Browsing the Yosemite lodging website I’m noticing lots of vacancies. This is unusual. It may be the effect of the cancellation of China outbound tour groups.
Didn’t Yosemite have a norovirus outbreak recently? It sounded pretty bad.
This may be a good year to visit Yosemite. I love that place except it is so crowded.
This is the second article I’ve seen about Colby College quarantining students. Are they going a little rogue and overboard here? This is outside the scope of the CDC’s quarantine it appears.
Yes, they did have a norovirus outbreak at the Ahwahnee. I had forgotten about that when I wrote the post. That could account for some of the drop off in tourism. But there are plenty of vacancies at the other lodge also. Perhaps places that have been complaining of being ruined by too many tourists will get a respite this year.
Article on Boston tourism industry and Chinese impact.
Per the other cc, the Westerdam has been denied entry to Guam and is currently in a holding pattern off Okinawa. They are working to finalize a new port of disembarkation. There are no known cases aboard and no quarantine.
Read that Diamond Princess passengers quarantined on their ship will get their meds delivered to them free according to what one passenger on that boat heard.
Another passenger on that boat who is diabetic was initially very concerned that they weren’t given any food from 11pm until past 11am and was concerned about getting food soon so his diabetes would stay under good control. Lots of logistical issues quarantining so many older folks who have medical issues and getting timely meals to all.
What if some of the Chinese passengers from the cruise ship in NJ are found to have Coronavirus? Thousands of passengers were allowed to disembark - how will they be found? What if they are carrying this virus? Does this concern anyone???
@Artist2233 respectfully, PLEASE calm down.
China is a massive country with over a billion people. The odds of any random Chinese national having nCoV are extremely low.
They have been out of the country for nearly 2 weeks (Jan 26) and are still showing NO SIGNS and have tested negative. They are NOT from Wuhan or the province. They are now leaving the country- due to depart today.
So no, I’m not concerned. At all. I’m way more concerned about the one person who tested positive for the flu.
If I wasn’t concerned about the fact that there were two suspected cases from Wuhan in the hospital I frequent (they later tested negative), I’m not going to be concerned about random Chinese people who have shown no symptoms in nearly two weeks they’ve been outside of China and are not from the epicenter.
Well, there is a family in HI who is canceling their upcoming Asia cruise for 8 people and stands to lose $32,000! Costco said no refund and initial response is that travel insurance won’t cover an epidemic. They’re still trying to cancel and very stressed about trying to get as much of a refund as possible.
So far, haven’t booked any travel and just going to the neighbor islands is looking better and better (if we go anywhere).
I hate that this virus has made folks more xenophobic and prejudiced against Asians and especially Chinese, including Chinese Americans. Yuck! We really need to work together and stop prejudging folks.
This.
I am guessing they are not too contagious until virus count is high, meaning until they are quite sick. They didn’t have a known case. Chances are it is ok.
Not being “xenophobic”. I am more concerned at the thousands of people of any race and background who were on a cruise ship and may have been exposed to this virus who are walking around locally at this moment.
@Artist2233 Yep. Got an email from a cousin who lives nearby. You betcha it concerns thrm.
@romanigypsyeyes I think it is wholly disrespectful to tell someone to calm down. If you don’t like what someone is saying you can ignore it or post something that interests you ( which you have done repeatedly).
I find it odd that some people are discussing and exchanging some good information and others are trying to be the “experts” when clearly the whole situation cannot yet be assessed. There are a lot of unknowns.
There is a lot of fear in some quarters. Heck, it’s been in the news way too much on every radio station. Why?
There are a lot of options and things to consider. Planners and information gatherers should be able to share info too.
I’m learning a lot from others. Pls keep sharing. For those who believe fear mongering or rumors are taking place maybe cite your alternate source so we can all learn.
Very little coming out if China is likely to to true. I hope we LEARN more. And continue to share.
There are a number of categories of people who are exempt from this. I hope whomever is enforcing this gets the word and doesn’t start dragging people off to jail (including Americans).
Two weeks of hotel bills for quarantine sounds expensive, but I’m sure many may be nervous about being in a government center.
Interesting read about panic buying and hoarding in Hong Kong with photos and videos.
I’m sure it would be the same here under similar circumstances. I’ve seen what people do for snowstorms, hurricane warnings, etc.
Check out this video from an American woman evacuated on the first flight that took consular staff out. Notice the plane is just a converted cargo plane, very basic. Also shots from inside medical facilities in Wuhan.

“There is a lot of fear in some quarters. Heck, it’s been in the news way too much on every radio station. Why?”
Fear sells. People keep coming back for updates. The more clicks or views, the better.
I live in one of the states with a confirmed case. There has been little on the local news or in the local papers other than some very level-headed, fact-based reports.
Dally tallies from Hubei province. No reports from China overall yet.
81 new deaths and 2,841 newly confirmed cases. Both are up from the previous day.
Of the new cases announced on Saturday their time, 1,985 were confirmed in Hubei’s capital of Wuhan.
