The bottom line is that no one is certain whether the other modes of transmission are probable for this virus. Too much is still unknown and that contributes greatly to the collective anxiety (or worse) everywhere.
@thumper1 Probably everyone. I would have thought this wasnât allowed. I thought no one who visited China in the last 14 days were allowed in. Isnât there a way to track that? And how does he think it is perfectly ok for her to travel this way possibly endangering others if she is carrying the virus?
We would presume he had taken precautions and yet was infected. It is so
I need to make my hubby read this thread! Lots of cancellations for the MWC in Barcelona this year, but hubby still plans on going. And they are in the talks of bringing him to Korea in between the 2 Japan trips. What the heck?
Anyone changed their work travel plans? @shawbridge ?
The plan seems to keep passengers aboard until theyâre all infected. Iâm not sure what the plan is after that.
Just kidding⊠a little bit. They have 3600 people in close quarters - anybody who doesnât already have the virus is probably going to catch it eventually if they stay on that ship long enough.
ETA: Looks like quarantine is scheduled to end on Feb 19. Iâm glad the end is in sight for the poor passengers stuck on board.
Sounds like MWC is trying to negotiate with Barcelona to let them cancel the conference https://www.wired.co.uk/article/mobile-world-congress-cancelled
At this point the quarantine on the Diamond Princess amounts to human experimentation⊠Yes, you keep a large number of people in close quarters you will expect it to spread. You have the crew hanging out together and serving the cabin quarantined guest and you can expect it to spread.
If the US or certain European nations were doing this I think there would be international outrage
Just saw the headline, 197 ends quarantine in California(?)âŠ
I hope they cancel!
^^^That refers to the first group of Americans removed from China to March AFB. No one showed symptoms.
Speaking of no one showing symptoms, the Westerdam cruise ship still is floating around the Pacific being denied a port anywhere. Thailand, Phillipines, Japan, GuamâŠall denied it docking.
As someone previously stated, the quarantine is to protect others at this point not the people on the ship. Sounds harsh nut I think that is the reality. There is some truth to the Chinese governmentâs use of the word âwarâ to fight the spread of the virus.
Westerdam has found a place to dock - Cambodia. Passengers will be allowed to disembark.
âGuests will disembark in Sihanoukville over the next few days and transfer via charter flights to Phnom Penh for forward travel home. Holland America Line will arrange and pay for all flights home, in addition to the full cruise refund and 100 per cent future cruise credit already communicated,â the company said.â
1,455 passengers, over 800 crew
They should send another ship and separate people who has a fever from the rest. It may minimize the spread. Getting everyone infected looks like just a matter of time. Whatâs Japan going to do then? Do they have facility enough to treat over 3,000 people?
Iâm surprised our government isnât doing more to get the US citizens off the boat and onto a quarantine base here to test/treat/isolate.
The woman in the cubicle next to my BFF in Austin just lost her mother to the virus, and her two sisters are ill. They live in Wuhan.
I found out that my BILâs work canceled all work trips to and from Asia until further notice.
Iâm surprised it took so long.
dietz199@>>>If the US or certain European nations were doing this I think there would be international outrage<<<<
The thing is, who do you think is doing what? This is a cruise ship, and this not Japanâs responsibility IMO. This is a UK flagged boat. The passenger tested positive was on Feb 1, the boat arrived in Japan Feb 3. The real question is whether Japan was even informed. Japan has been screwed over. The US can look after itâs own citizens, no one is preventing that happening.
Guam refused the Westerdam. Cue outrage.
What do you expect the US Department of State to do? (Send in the Seal Team while the ship is at sea?) Pick up the phone and âdemandâ that a foreign country open its docks to a British cruise ship bcos it has a handful of US citizens aboard? Until it docks, the US has to wait until the passengers get off like everyone else.
DS goes to Stanford on Friday for a hackathon. Itâs probably unreasonable to worry, but I still do. There have been two cases in Santa Clara county.
There are almost 500 Americans on board. Does Japan even want to potentially take care of them? I would think negotiating an exit for the US citizens wouldnât be a huge sticking point or any need to âdemand.â Itâs at the dock and people come and go every day. Put them on a bus and take them to one of the many US military bases?
The Americans in Wuhan were able to leave quarantine with government intervention.
But itâs likely that if they let the American off the ship, theyâll have to let everyone off. The issue really is, what are the limits of quarantine? Do they even work if someone can fly from China to Korea and on to anyplace? Was it too little too late? Honestly, I think most governments have done their best trying to get people who were stuck home in a manner that limits risk to others. Is it perfect, no but there are many people involved.
I think the people onboard those ships are really in a terrible situation. But I donât necessarily agree that they should land and everyone should get off.
