And I’m going to go out on a limb and say if Sweden gets to herd immunity via infection their death rate is going to be way higher than 647/MM. New York is at ~1400/MM and they don’t have herd immunity. New York City is at ~2300/MM and they haven’t got herd immunity either. Swedes are healthier than New Yorkers but not that much healthier.

@Midwest67 thanks for posting the article I referenced, I am still reading in order, and only on page 33 (blushes) so I did not know if we could post links or not.

Anyone notice this article?
https://www.sanjoseinside.com/news/revelations-about-excess-deaths-in-santa-clara-county-spark-calls-for-greater-transparency/

It says that, for March 2020, 32 people in Santa Clara County died with COVID-19 listed as the cause of death. However, overall deaths increased 20% versus March 2019; deaths at home increased 17% versus March 2019. This is about 300 more deaths than March 2019. So some people are suspicious that some of those extra 300 deaths were due to COVID-19, but not diagnosed as such.

Note that in early March 2020, fear of COVID-19 was building, and some major employers in the county told their employees to work from home if they can, and in middle of March, the county’s first stay-home order was made. In other words, there was a lot less commuting, and presumably car crashes and associated deaths, in March 2020 compared to March 2019. On the other hand, it is also possible that people died of unrelated things because they were too afraid of COVID-19 to go to the hospital.

Can’t speak for SC county. But here, our paper reported that there were 25% fewer 911 calls related to chest pains and 10% (!) more DOA compared to the same period last year. Let this sink in.

I know a guy who works in a manner involved, such that he knows about the antibody testing and he says:

There are > 200 COVID-19 antibody tests that were allowed for release in the US under the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on the condition that manufacturers had validated their kits or lab developed tests. Unfortunately, many hadn’t and worse, many lied about it. In fact, 85% of the them are inaccurate, as independent researchers hired by the FDA have stated, with far too many false positives and false negatives. The FDA has since declared that ALL antibody tests must now submit their validation data for review within 10 days for ‘FDA Authorization’…thus far, only 12 antibody tests have received that certification. Euroimmun is one of the 12 tests. Many clinics are offering what they call FDA cleared or approved antibody tests, often at inflated prices…they’re not, unless they are on the FDA web site as authorized.

The March Santa Clara County excess deaths have been reported before. Here’s something from April 22 San Jose Mercury, reporting the story: https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/04/22/santa-clara-county-death-data-shows-20-increase-in-march-suggesting-more-coronavirus-victims-than-previously-known/

It’s confusing, because 300 excess deaths are too many for covid-19 for that time. Maybe they were people being afraid to go to the hospital. Certainly the emergency room visits were way down in March. Heart attacks and strokes, maybe.

It was reported that my county had the highest number of DOA in something like 17 years. Each case was an elderly person. The news article did not give the cause of each death but it cited social distancing. Apparently nobody had checked on these individuals and they may have been too afraid to call for help and go to the hospital out of not wanting to contract Covid19. Very sad.

Our latest COVID cases are a cluster, part of an extended family in public housing, including children and adults who tested positive.

Is this due to a lack of federal oversight, or just inevitable in a time of chaos/unprecedented events?

Five carat diamond ring…bought with PPP loans…

Released yesterday. Nashville is not a hot spot. There was a correctional facility cluster and, I think, another few at a nursing home. Still have cases, but doing pretty well. My county is in the Nashville metropolitan area and we currently have 0 Covid hospitalizations.

Where there’s a crisis there are those looking to profit on it, whether scalpers, businesses, individuals, or whatever. To some, money/possessions are the ultimate driving force. I suspect that goes back to the beginning of time.

Glad they caught him. Can’t help but wonder how many are falling through the cracks.

Huh, I wonder how the feds found out so quickly? We don’t have to account for how we spend the PPP funds until up to 30 days after the 8-week spending period ends.

My guess is he was bragging about it when making some of his purchases (or paying child support) and got turned in.

@garland I didn’t mean any offense by my question and I apologize. I was wondering why you ended up running your remote class the way you did because (1) most people I know, and it seems like most on CC, are mostly wishing their remote classes kept the rigor they had when they were on campus and (2) 3/4 of S19’s classes ran class exactly the way it would have been run on campus and I assumed that was the goal - to give the students the same experience as close as possible to in-person class and (3) a number of posters on our Class of 2019 site said their kids thought class was even more rigorous online.

As for as S19 could tell, everyone was showing up for his classes (they are smaller than yours so, in his case, he can see who is “there”). I’m 100% sure that, if any of the kids had bigger problems and couldn’t complete the assignments, the professors were doing what they could to help but were also understanding of all circumstances. That’s why Bowdoin went exclusively Credit/No Credit with no option for grades. It was one of very few Colleges that made this decision because they understood the disparities that exist once you send kids home to take class.

Honestly, having 70 kids in a writing class sounds difficult even on campus and I’m sure you worked hard since Covid to make sure your students got what they needed. I didn’t mean to be flippant about that.

Just the beginning of vaccine squabbles. French Pres Macron asks for meeting with Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson, after Hudson says this in an interview:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-14/france-says-unacceptable-for-u-s-to-get-sanofi-vaccine-first?sref=VGqaY5U2

My prediction: The next Sanofi President will be French. LOL

Good.

I’m hundreds of posts behind, so sorry if this was already posted.
Looks like Maryland is going to start relaxing restrictions on Friday at 5.
I don’t know all of the related “rules” yet, but will check them out.

A restaurant a few miles away from us, that’s been in business well over 40 years (maybe decades longer, I really don’t know) is talking about closing down. It’s a fairly nice restaurant, but it may have been getting less and less busy even before COVID. When we’ve gone we felt like it was an “old people’s” place. Still sad.

Yes, but <<<the barber,=“” karl=“” manke,=“” 77,=“” who=“” has=“” been=“” cutting=“” hair=“” in=“” owosso,=“” mich.,=“” for=“” almost=“” 60=“” years,=“” likened=“” michigan=“” under=“” ms.=“” whitmer,=“” a=“” democrat,=“” to=“” “a=“” police=“” state.”=“” he=“” said=“” planned=“” keep=“” hair,=“” despite=“” the=“” suspension=“” of=“” his=“” licenses.=“”>>>

Sigh.

I can’t find any updates on the restaurant in Maine that reopened. The state pulled his licenses and he said he would stay open. Why aren’t there any updates? I even messaged a local TV station yesterday and they said they hadn’t heard anything but would check. Crickets.

Just checked their numbers today on Worldometer. Daily decreasing new cases for at least a week. So far, so good. Where do you get the R numbers for different countries, @FlyMeToTheMoon ? Have you gotten any more updates from your daughter on the situation there?
