I actually have yet to see a single politician on TV with hair that was not cut during the lockdown (while the hair on female CNBC and CNN anchors does look a bit longer and less styled than usualā¦)
Bars are closed here in CT too. Itās too cold to go sit on the beach.
As of May 20ā¦Restaurants can re-open here for patio dining only, no alcohol. I thought I read someplace that there wouldnāt be waiting service but folks would be allowed to sit at outdoor tables that were sufficiently spaced. Not sure how just letting people sit at outdoor tables will help the waitstaff that has been laid off. Maybe I misunderstood!
Also opening are hair dressers, nail places, elective surgery and dentists. All with reduced capacity.
Some non-essential retail will also be allowed to open.
Governor saysā¦the data in the state will be closely monitored. If it looks good, there is a second stage, third and fourth. It sounds like each will be evaluated two weeks after the prior one.
Social distancing will still be expected, and this could take months to change.
New cases are still increasing in number in this state, probably due to way increased numbers being tested. Less have been hospitalized.
Iām going to be optimisticā¦and hope May brings some good news!
We are having landscaping work done. The crew of four was here todayā¦but they are all family members who live at the end of our road. Still, I didnāt see them congregating. One walked down to our house, and the other three brought toolsā¦arriving in three small trucks. Glad to have this doneā¦and nice to be contributing to our local small business.
NYC major Bill de Blasioās hair looked a tad long this morning on TV. On the other hand, Larry Kudlow, Trumpās top economic advisor, managed to get a barbershop to open to cut his hair through a friend.
I havenāt cut or dyed my hair in about 10 months. It is what it is. Maybe long hair will be back in style. Mr has been growing his out for quite a while in order to donate it. Heās recently learned how to do his own pony tail lol.
My tattoo artist isnāt reopening any time soon even if sheās allowed to. She donated all of her PPE to local hospitals and even if she could get more, she doesnt want to take it from medical personnel.
I think people are going to form circles as part of social distancing. Like this summer I plan on only letting close family over. Theyāve only been seeing each other. So yes, if one gets it weāre all at risk but I also donāt think people will realistically continue to stay away from everyone for years. This will be the way people go imo. Towards these types of social circles.
Iāve said before Iām not counting on a vaccine. Iām counting on a treatment. Itās the only realistic way to reopen semi safely imo.
Being in Michigan, it has been interesting to watch northern Michigan demand openings so people can go to their summer homes. The UP for example has 59 ICU beds total. 30 are currently available. Good luck when you open up and people from down here bring the virus up there.
I went out for a few hours and came home to over 100 new posts. @TatinG our mailman has always worn gloves. I figure he wants to keep his hands clean.
Regarding skiing- I read an article where several early cases came from helicopter skiing and know of one of those infected who got the virus helicopter skiing in Canada.
Today was a big day out for me. Dropped off a few things at my S. Noticed the wholesale nursery on our way was now back open to contractors and landscaping contractors.
Went to CVS to pick up a prescription. They had a sign requiring masks. The pharmacy line was marked on the ground. Plexiglass and a table in front of the pickup desk. No longer needed to sign anything. No wipes, dish soap or paper goods in stock. Everyone wore a mask. Went into Vons next and no line to get in. Everyone was wearing masks and they had one way aisles set up. No dish soap or wipes but they did have some TP including Charmin. They had you line up along the outer perimeter of the store to check out in one line. A clerk directed you to the next available check stand. Overall not a bad experience but not as well organized as the higher end market.
Picked up lunch at a restaurant. They were doing all the business at the outdoor patio. No patrons allowed inside. I had preordered so just paid and picked up. They had a sheet attached to the bag explaining the steps they were taking to keep things safe and sanitary.
We took our lunch up to a park above the beach. Picnic tables were open. We found a good one with a view. Lots of people having lunch, the tables are all spaced quite far apart so easy to distance. The walking path was busy with all ages. Very few people in masks. Took the steps to the sand and took a walk. A lot of people out on the sand with towels but all spaced a good distance apart. No masks. My observation is that female swimsuit bottoms are tiny this season. People were giving each other space. On the stairs up and down people stopped at landings to let others have each flight to a single group. It was our first time out on a Friday in 6 weeks. This location is a spot we used to walk at frequently. It seemed liked a normal Friday.
I have mixed feelings about opening up. Like many of us itās easy to say stay home when we have money in the bank. I know people who are hurting financially and they want to go back to work and feel they can do so safely, I also know some who donāt feel safe going back to work or are still working but go anyway because they need the money.
I would be very skeptical of any numbers coming out of China. Singapore is an island smaller than NYC. It would be difficult to scale their strategy to the whole US.
Anybody annoyed that President Obama had the secret service drive him to his country club, have it opened just for him and some friends. In a hot spot area with very strict sah rules right now and the courses etc closed for everyone else.
On the same exact day the DC area sent out a voice mail to all cell phones recorded by First Lady Michelle Obama telling everyone to stay inside.
My sister who lives there loves them and was super angry.
One big difference, though. After prior scares with air quality on planes, the airlines greatly improved the recirc systems. Most airplanes are equipped with HEPA filters so that the air thatās recirculated is not just spreading germs and is pretty clean. One of the recommendations for avoiding getting sick on an airplane is to direct your personal air jet at your face so itās blowing that filtered air to you and pushing away any sneezes, coughs or things generally floating around.
Most workplaces - especially old school manufacturing buildings donāt have HEPA filtering unless itās a clean room environment.
Iām not saying airplanes are clean - theyāre not. But the air circulation isnāt one of the high risk areas of planes, itās the people around you coughing/sneezing/breathing on you and the incredibly filthy surfaces that you touch.
This would be disappointing, but on grand scheme of things that politicians have done since the beginning of this pandemic, this is a small blip on the radar.
Do we have any proof seniors are dying of loneliness? Because we do have proof that theyāre dying of COVID, in massive numbers, largely by themselves without the ability to say goodbye to anyone.
"That said, I agree that there is beginning to be real suffering in this country. We have few safety nets. Something should be done to ease it.
Other nations are imposing restrictions, or slooooowly reopening, while at the same time ensuring the well-being of their citizens. The US is bad on both counts.
I believe we have the money to subsidize those who have lost their jobs due to CV. Those who remain at high risk could continue to receive subsidies while the nation opens slooooowly, until there is a vaccine. We have the money to do it. All it would take is a few cuts to our defense budget and a hike in corporate taxes/1%."
Thank you, Katliamom for your many comments here. As a country, we could do so much more for our people if we wanted to. Thank you for continuing to point that out.
California has done a remarkable job in handling this crisis with some of the lowest death rates in the nation despite serious population density in large cities. I suggest the rest of us refrain from any criticism-They clearly know what they are doing, and did something right.
California was good, and mostly let the public health people take charge, but California was also lucky. We could have had superspreader events before we locked down, but luckily we didnāt. We could have had someone like that New York guy who infected 100 people all by himself, but luckily we didnāt. We could have had a dozen people returning from China with the virus, but luckily we didnāt.
So, I did the google and this only came up on two news sites - neither of which I would ever read because of their slanted reporting.
Whatās really interesting is both articles mentioned he was photographed, but one didnāt even have a picture at all and the second had one - but from a photographer who took many, many photos of Obama when he was President.
Iām sure, OTOH, you have seen an article with all the facts of this outing to his golf club and witness confirmations and with the picture taken on Saturday - that can be verified as to the date, place, and time. So, if you wouldnāt mind, either post it here or just PM the link with that picture to me.
I donāt expect my mother to survive the lockdown, even though the coronavirus has not been detected in her CCRC. She is walking less, not getting dressed every day, getting weaker and sadder every day. But Covid 19 wonāt be listed on her death certificate.
