Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

You’re two months too late to be going to Joanne’s. That chain has supplied the bulk of materials for all those home-made masks you’re seeing. That is why it’s an essential service. Yes, they’re short of fabric now because for the past 8 weeks millions of people have taken up sewing. Plus, a lot of fabric comes from Asia. Joanne’s supply chain was in no position to anticipate the phenomenal demand for its fabric over the winter, and now they’re in competition with everyone else for it - at a time of slowing international shipping to boot.

Why are they even considered an ‘essential’ service??<<<<<<<<<<

But you went there to shop LOL, you tell me? I haven’t been to a Joanne’s in a couple of years, but it was a zoo on a normal day. How could it be possibly worth going to a fabric store to shop to make masks to help prevent spreading? This is where we are as people, all of us thinking about what we want, as essential LOL. Exceptionalism is why there is no leadership, we just won’t do it anyway.

Really, the govt etc just needs to come out and state that this is beyond the capacity of govt to control and allow us all to be prepared for the carnage. The govt is literally throwing it’s hand up in the air.

Illinois is ready to move to opening Phase 3. It’s a cheerful afternoon here.

Library is opening soon for curbside pickup! I can see a friend or two again (while socially distancing)! Pray in a church (with SD & no services yet though)! I can get a haircut (while wearing a mask)!

I think the happiest news of the day is that the makeup exam for DD’s AP exam (should she run into the same troubles tomorrow that others have experienced in the upload process) doesn’t conflict with the concurrent enrollment class she will be starting (moved to online). WHEW!!! She’ll have a whopping 10 minute break between exam and class, but we’ll take what we can get.

I got my hair cut today (on the down low in a stylist’s basement).

It was threatening rain, which has proved to be a great time to shop if one wants to avoid people.

I went to Ace Hardware & got herbs & flowers, then Trader Joe’s, then Jewel Osco (scored hand sanitizer; my bottle in the car is running low).

All set for another 7-10 days.

Wow, groceries are getting expensive!

Everybody I saw had a mask. Not everybody had it covering their nose & mouth — but perhaps they pulled it up when close to other people. Really, all the stores had very few customers (it’s the rain, people).

Next on my list: call the vet for the dog’s heart worm meds & see if I can get an eye appointment scheduled for June so I don’t run out of contacts.

I will take this little bit of new normal & cherish it.

I had 2 job nibbles this week, but the pay is not encouraging. Im not that desperate …yet.

We are squirreling away what we can in anticipation of a very bad year (or two).

A happy day here too! Beautiful weather, all shoppers wearing masks, and I was able to get Clorox wipes at the stores. Things seemed almost normal.

Re dentists: I get frequent cleaning due to some genetic issues with my teeth and roots, including as someone else said, at a periodontist. I haven’t been since February now, and that seems like a short time for most, but not for me.

Can people who are in the know about dentistry and COVID risk, please advise me about when/how it would be safe/unsafe?

Just read in an article about Dr.Bright’s congressional committee hearing: “most members of the committee wore masks except while they were speaking”.
Really? I hope it’s the journalist’s mistake and at least our congress members have an idea what masks are for.

Relaxing the requirements doesn’t make the threat go away (and there will still be a threat absent a vaccine).

In our state the yellow phase stipulates that people can go back to work while following CDC guidelines (those that are currently working from home and are able to do so are encouraged to continue doing that), except those working at gyms, theaters, hair and nail salons.

Do you think all employees and customers are going to keep wearing masks (correctly)?

Limit of 25 people allowed to congregate while using masks.

One of our churches had two services last Sunday, they were to keep a “safe” distance and wear masks, but did they sing with masks on? I don’t know, I still don’t think that was a good idea.

Our kids have been home since the middle of March.
Online school is to continue for the rest of the school year and summer school is online as well.

But now that we are in yellow phase they want students to clean out their lockers, limit of 25 in the building, with masks on.
Why couldn’t that wait until later in the summer or fall?

I can see letting a few students in to get essential items and parents picking up medications but not everyone.

I won’t debate about Bright’s testimony, but I have to push back on the ad hominem whistleblower brush off. The idea that because YOU only have personally run into ones with issues to grind, really is immaterial. I’ll give you:

Or Deep Throat, as far as more “recent” history.

LOL @Cardinal Fang!

For fabric for masks, you could use cotton sheets, if you have any you can spare. Or, check a local facebook group, if there is one. Around here, some people have donated fabric to people sewing masks. There’s even a mask sewing facebook group that’s sprung up, and people have donated fabric, elastic, and money for supplies to sewers.

X

This is good news! I really hope all regions continue to meet the metrics so we can officially get to Phase 3.

Wow, fear makes some people really nasty.

@shellfell

The ADA (American Dental Association) is providing tons of info to dentists in terms of re-opening protocol. Around here, most closed when the ADA recommended doing so.

According to the info we get from our dentists, the American Dental Association is providing excellent guidance.

@coralbrook - have you tried pillowcases or t-shirts? This article says they are really good for masks. Tightly woven but not rigid. I find quilting fabric to be a bit rigid.

You probably have some mismatched pillowcases around just waiting to find a new purpose! You could also ask on a neighborhood list serve for donations. If the fabric is really boring, maybe you could tie dye them first.

Regarding wafting smoke or perfume, what you are sensing from afar are molecules. Heavier things, particles and droplets, do not travel that far. So wrong analogy.

But when one is yakking, droplets of saliva do fly out in droves (unlike when one is simply exhaling even when running). So embrace silence. ?

I have really changed. When this started back in late January I bought a lot of food and supplies. As we locked down in early March I really wanted everyone to follow the rules. They didn’t. People who shopped at grocery stores, essential workers of all types out a lot and many more going for take out walking without masks etc efc. Then I realized it doesnt matter. I live In a state with a huge number of cases And more than 5k dead, the only thing we can do is protect ourselves. When people pass me i smile ( under m y mask), wait until they pass or just pause.
In these tough times, I don’t have the emotional energy to negatively engage with people doing things I don’t agree with. I’ve also found so many blind to tge needs of others. People who have little to no concern regarding those who are unemployed and their sanctimiony makes me run away. I’m fine just worrying about me and mine.

Maybe the ‘hall monitor’ oriented will succeed at shaming over 300 MM people into doing exactly what we aren’t even sure is informed behavior but I don’t think so.

Where I’m at, mask wearing is maybe around 25%. Not from lack of means, either, since I’ve seen people of little wearing a bandana.

If my state doesn’t go down in the mother-of-all-spikes that keeps being predicted by a few here, we’ll have to rethink the whole deal. Fire some people, vote others out, stop listening to more than a few.

Mask wearing I’ve seen is pretty close to 100% for places where folks can’t be 6+ feet apart (e.g. picking up food, grocery shopping, etc.) Outdoors where there is breeze and sun and humidity, fewer and fewer people are wearing masks but folks are staying way more than 6+ feet apart. Everyone seems pretty polite and greets others but no one engages in prolonged conversations.

My mom is still confused about why each of us is picking her up every day and her sleeping at my sister’s every night. She’s always happy to see her “kids,” but I think the longer she’s away from her SR environment, the tougher the adjustment back to there will be. The place is still having all SRs dine in their own rooms and not allowing outside visitors, even family members.

@Midwest67 @Groundwork2022 Well, it’s the first day that the Northeast section of Illinois is under 20% positive in testing which is one of the metrics that has to be met, but we have to keep that up for 14 days in order to go to phase 3 in two weeks. I’m not sure we know that will happen.

And I don’t really get the phase 3 part where ten people can gather. Ten people are gathering and social distancing ALL the time in our neighborhood right out in the open. I’ve seen a number of happy hours on people’s driveways where everyone brings their own drinks and sits at least six feet apart. I guess, in phase three, that will just be officially allowed. I don’t think the city will make many changes to the lakefront or the beaches…

I guess more retailers and salons can open with restrictions in phase three. I wonder how many people will show up. I hope they do. I don’t want all of the small businesses in our town to go out of business!
