Pre CV I had a personal trainer, but I don’t think I’ll be going back, even if/when they do reopen. I just joined a 28 day at-home HIIT workout to shake things up a bit. I’ve been running and hiking and biking but need some options for when it’s raining or if I don’t have a lot of time. Also, I get bored easy, lol.
If you’re wondering about my post, I’m in Europe. I keep forgetting you cant see location anymore, I seem to remember it used to be part of the visible profile.
My greater concern was not so much death - but being hospitalized for days and days at a time. That would be devastating financially for us, even though we have insurance. Between job losses and my 401k decimated, a major hospital bill would be a bitter pill to swallow. 20% of tens/hundreds of thousands is still a fortune.
Interesting. If I am hospitalized for covid, my flat fee would ordinarily be $250, but my insurance company is waiving the co-pays for covid. Not sure for how much longer, though… maybe only until the end of May.
Edited to add: I wonder if the government will extend the deadline for using FSA and HSA money, given that no one wants to see a doctor right now?
Now is a great time to see the doctor. I’ve seen my orthopedist for a next day appointment followed by an MRI the day after that. No waiting for days. I don’t think that people with bone or joint injuries seeing the orthopedist would be any more likely to be contagious than the average person at the grocery store. And the doctor’s office is going to be more sanitary than the grocery store too.
Got a text from D1 this morning. She had just gotten off her weekly COVID-19 update conference call with the CDC.
The first human trial results of a RNA COVID-19 vaccination look extremely promising. None of the participants developed adverse reactions except for pain, redness & swelling at the injection site. And more importantly all participants developed COVID-19 antibodies, sometimes at higher levels than known recovered COVID-19 patients.
The trial was extremely small and was non-representative of the larger US population, but it’s promising news anyway.
Still to be answered–whether antibodies confer immunity to the disease, permanent or temporary, and how long the antibody response lasts in test participants.
We are not planning to go back to our gym right when it reopens. I loved going to the gym since I could work out on the elliptical with an ocean view, but there were too many people at the gym who did not clean their machines and no matter how many times I complained to the management it continued. Our gym will have to do a much better job of keeping everything clean before we return.
I have a treadmill and a recumbent bike in the basement, but H is using the space as his office now and the treadmill is covered with papers. I could use the bike but I’ve been lazy.
The only thing I miss is my tennis, but if/when our courts open I‘m expecting rules like only with family members or only singles (which I don’t want to play.)
I’m quite content just walking the dogs, doing yoga, and doing arm exercises with my hand weights, which I do anyway for my tennis elbow.
I cancelled my gyno appt for Thursday. Rescheduled for end of July with first appt of the day. They offer a telemedicine appt, but that really doesn’t work for an annual.
MA Gov Baker announced we’re moving to Phase 1 beginning today. Manufacturing, construction and places of worship can resume today. Retail stores (curbside pickup only), pet grooming and hair salons can resume next Monday. All with very strict protocols required.
Other service salons (nails, massage, etc), summer camps and indoor dining not until Phase 2. No date, but no sooner than June 8.
Gyms, bars not until Phase 3. Again, no date, but not before end of June.
MA never had a Stay at Home ORDER, but the Stay at Home ADVISORY has now changed to a Safer at Home Advisory. No clear on difference, but maybe more lax? Gatherings still limited to <10. And, masks (which is an order!), social distancing, hand washing, continue.
My dentist just called and cancelled my biannual tooth cleaning appt. this week; they are still only doing “emergency” procedures. I still can’t see an optometrist for a new glasses prescription (my old prescription sunglasses flew off my head and the frame broke). My dermatologist is still only offering telemedicine. So here (New Jersey) it’s still not easy to get non-emergency medical appointments for in-person procedures.
Re:gyms. Aside from the fact that ours won’t be opening before end of June at the earliest, I’m considering putting my membership on hold. I only go for the classes, mostly yoga. And even though they are doing online classes now, I’m not doing them and feel like there are plenty of free online options if I wanted to. I’ve kept my membership active up to now, but now I’m realizing I won’t be comfortable in a yoga class for a long time. So, now considering putting it on hold for a while. Not sure how long they’ll let me stay on hold though.
On my dog walk this morning, I listened to Politico’s Pulse Check Episode 193 “Coronavirus: Inside the White House’s race for more tests” (dated May 7).
Host Dan Diamond often has interesting insider information to share from his sources.
He says in the 3 month span of February, March, and April, the US conducted a total of about 6 million tests for SARS-CoV-2. He says the US has ramped up testing capacity significantly and is on track to do 8 million tests in May alone.
Diamond says although the US is still not where it needs to be re: testing according to public health experts, the trajectory is promising. I seem to recall him saying our per capita testing is now greater than South Korea.
He says one metric to keep an eye on is the positivity rate, as testing expands & SIP orders are relaxed.
There is so much we don’t know about this virus. 5 Sailors who tested negative twice but now test positive. Where did this come from, they were quarantined? I hope we wI’ll find out so much from this ship as a case study.
I am not a conspiracy theorist but I just don’t know if a negative test means that you don’t have the virus. This is the strangest acting virus. Are the tests not that reliable? I don’t know.
D19 and BF were apart 66 days, until last night at the outdoor drive-by event for the town’s seniors. His mom gave her the OK to stand and talk with him and it did DD a world of good. The counties they live and work in have total cases in the single digits, some of which have recovered, so it was starting to feel excessive to keep them apart.
