Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

My kid is a Barre member in Phoenix. It’s about $100 a month…and they have not offered any discount while closed or an extension of membership, or the ability to pause membership. The cost continues to be taken out of the kid’s account each month. I understand they have rent to pay…but they don’t have employees. Place is closed.

OTOH, my gym in CT…totally suspended payments until they can reopen which looks like sometime in June. And they are offering a ton of online options.

Agree, my S21 has an ingrown toenail that is infected. I handed him the mini pliers last week - seriously - but my wife found out and went crazy. We called around today to find a podiatrist and they all had availability. He’s going in to have it fixed tomorrow.

Well…our governor in CT just announced that hair places aren’t opening this Wednesday. Instead it will be sometime in June…TBD. Wondering what made him change his mind.

West coast of Florida here. I went to the beach last night to watch the sunset. We live on the intracoastal side of a barrier island. I have to cross a wooden bridge to access the beach. There are several public access points along our beaches. There was a sheriff standing ON the bridge with no mask on. Idk how wide the bridge is, but there was no way to get across without coming within six feet of her. It really kind of irked me, though idk why as I, myself, was not wearing a mask. I have only seen one person wearing a mask on the beach. It’s generally very easy to social distance with a wide berth. Not so on the bridge, but people usually take turns and wait and don’t STAND on the bridge. I wish she would have been standing at the base of the bridge on one of the ends. Then she could have backed up when someone crossed.

I don’t belong to a gym - I just exercise at home. But, my mil does. She was able to reduce what she is paying. I think one pays more for using the pool, and that is what she only does via her water aerobics classes. The gym part has re-opened, but not the pool. So, she dropped down to a no pool level of membership.

Florida reported 800 new cases yesterday. Source: MSNBC.

Back is really bothering me so I put in an phone order for heat relief packs for backs and just picked it up. They have your order at drive thru window. I’ll put it on when I go to sleep tonight.

Texas reported its highest single day in cases. 1801 on Saturday. 700 of which are in Amarillo area.

Even though MA announced hair salons can open next Monday, May 25th, my hairdresser just let me know she won’t open until mid-June. Just too scared.

There is something like that, I’d have to look up how much, but it would still be a fortune.

A neighbor started a GoFundMe page for a Denver Public Schools staffer - he’s in facilities management - who’s been in ICU and on a ventilator for 4 weeks and whose bills are expected to be astronomical even with his insurance.

Gym: mine has been pretty bad about hygiene under normal circumstances, so I’ll stick to home workouts for a while even if they open.

FSA: the CARES act did add some otc meds you can use the funds for, but did not change dates. Luckily some plans, including ours, already had a carry-over provision for the last $500.

Eyes and feet and teeth: hoping to get those appts allowed if possible soonish.

That makes nonsense since I would think Denver Public Schools have an ACA compliment plan. I can’t imagine their plan wouldn’t be ACA compliment.

“Annual limits are the total benefits an insurance company will pay in a year while an individual is enrolled in a particular health insurance plan.

Starting in 2014, the Affordable Care Act bans annual dollar limits. Until then, annual limits are restricted under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regulations published in June 2010.

For plan years starting between September 23, 2010 and September 22, 2011, plans may not limit annual coverage of essential benefits such as hospital, physician and pharmacy benefits to less than $750,000. The restricted annual limit will be $1.25 million for plan years starting on or after September 23, 2011, and $2 million for plan years starting between September 23, 2012 and January 1, 2014. For plans issued or renewed beginning January 1, 2014, all annual dollar limits on coverage of essential health benefits will be prohibited”

I have a client who is 50, a little overweight but in reasonably good shape. He spent 2 weeks in the hospital; had clots; they did not put him on a vent. Went home for a week, had a new clot and back in for 2 days. When I called him 10 days later for his session last Saturday, no answer on his cell phone, and he is very reliable. I will call his wife if I don’t hear soon to find out if he’s back in the hospital.

Even on the phone, I could hear when we had our session 10 days ago that his breathing is at least a little strained.

well the Police are not available for non 911 emergencies anymore. Yesterday someone I know wanted to file a harassment claim to start work on a restraining order. Went to the Police and there was a sign saying “call this number” They called the number and there was no answer. Would be interested if this is everywhere, where the police stations are closed (or at least on the weekends)

Looks like Covid-19 rearing it’s ugly head again in China. But, we are different in US, so it won’t happen to us.

We are members of a small gym (private or semiprivate training and group classes only). They reduced the cost while they were closed ( just charging us for one of our two memberships) and offered live and on demand classes, loaned equipment and really went above and beyond to keep us from going too stale.
They are reopening later this week (AZ) with all kinds of extra cleaning and other measures in place. We still won’t be the first ones back. I trust them to keep the equipment clean, it’s the airspace I’m concerned about. I do think they are doing everything they can, I’m just cautious, even with few cases in our city. They plan on keeping the online content going for a while as well for those of us who are cautious.

The tests , depending on which one you use, have been shown to produce both false positives and false negatives. The one in use in the WH has been said to be worryingly unreliable.

Even ACA compliant plans can have big deductibles, $8k or more.

Since this person was on the maintenance staff, he may have a different medical plan than the teachers. My sister is a DPS teacher but she is not part of the union, not on the retirement plan, and not on the medical plan (on her husband’s) so who knows if this person is using any of the DPS benefit plans. Most school buildings have been closed since March 14 (a few are still open to use the kitchens for making meals) so this worker may have been furloughed.

True. But 8k is nowhere close to astronomical.

It’s definitely a lot of money for most people so I can understand some having trouble paying a bill that size

He might be furloughed but he still has insurance according to post.

Or viewed alternately, China’s lockdown and treatment of its citizens in Wuhan was much more strict and lasted longer than anything the US did (or could do.) If the Chinese methods weren’t enough to eradicate this virus, why do we think extending the US SAH measures would eradicate it?

The answer is - no measures an individual country or state or region or continent will take will work unless every single one locked down, eradicated it in their own area and prohibited all travel until all areas of the world were totally 100% C19 free. Won’t happen. So the realistic answer is to do our best to keep economies operating on at least a limited basis as much as possible, doing reasonable steps to mitigate and keep infections at bay and reducing movement in hot spots as they arise.

At least one of the states that recently relaxed restrictions will have an uptick in cases, just like China did after taking the most draconian measures they could. Simple reality. We can’t all stay home until there’s a cure. Just not feasible.

It is likely we will never eradicate this virus.

The US SAH measure were not intended to eradicate the virus, they were initially put in place to not overwhelm healthcare systems and to flatten the curve.

I agree with your thoughts about keeping economies operating to the extent possible, while mitigating infection spread. And that there will be outbreaks when things open up, or kids go back to school, or parents back to work.

And in Colorado it might be better to NOT have insurance. We have expanded medicaid and everything would be covered if he had that.

I got the impression that the Go Fund Me was for the extra expenses there are with someone being in the ICU, and there are lots of them. Parking, gas, child care (if needed), meals, time off work for the spouse. This person may have worked a second job and that income is lost.
