Disney world starting reopening July 11th. I love Disney, but will not be rushing back there or any other theme park - prefer to let them work out the kinks etc before spending that kind of money.
They will have temperature checks, mandatory mask wearing, lower capacity etc.
Once you get to the point of needing lockdowns, you have let things go too long and too far. A lockdown that catches things early can be very effective, though, as seen in China. A lockdown that happens late leaves enough of the virus to make slowing and stopping and controlling it very difficult. To be effective, we would have ideally had testing, contact tracining, and quarantining up and running right away. the next level would be at the very least, having them ready now before reopening. A really poor way to respond is to close things down and then reopen without having those things in place (what we are doing now). Look at the countries that are doing well. What did they do? Are we comparing apples to apples in terms of virus spread? Comparing a country hit hard that responded well to one who didn’t is not the same as comparing a country that didn’t get hit hard to one that did.
Ventured out to the pot shop today. Curbside pickup opened up on Monday. They have a small lot next to the building, so had a satellite lot for the queue. Employees and a couple of police officers directing traffic, all in masks. Very well organized. Waited 10-15 minutes before being directed to the main lot. Masks were required for customers and employees. No advance ordering, so employee came to the car to take our order. She was < 3 feet of H to take the order, but both were masked. Took the order, debit card only, then she left and then came back with our bag of goods.
Employee said the owners have been great. No one got furloughed. Store employees were reassigned to cultivation. But they’re happy to be open again. She pointed out one of the guys directing traffic was an owner of the shop, so she seemed to appreciate that he was hustling along with the rest of them.
Passed a few shopping centers along the way and all were full of cars. Like everything was normal. I didn’t see the people, but mask compliance seems to be pretty high around here.
The longterm effects of this disease are not yet known. There could be permanent, possibly devastating damage to lungs, heart, the vasculature, the nervous system and other organs it is effecting. Who knows if there might even be secondary effects to the skin, feet ongoing vulnerability to other rashes or who knows what. Studies are just beginning on the cognitive effects of hypoxia from the pulmonary impact alone. The effects of hypoxia on cognition are well known and well established. This study happens to be a new one on MS patients. And the research is just beginning https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7194705/ Lets not forget, or minimize the mental health impact, the depression and anxiety affecting many, many people both those who have had the disease, who have had a family member with the disease, and who have been isolated or otherwise impacted by the disease. To minimize this, or consider it only akin to a flu, is sadly myopic.
In this case I think it is a group who has no mechanical background thinking they know how to make cars better than automakers and mechanical engineers. I think in order to reject scientific views of pandemic response one would have to at least listen to top experts first from sources commonly accepted among experts, and then would have to understand at least the general idea of what these people are saying. I think that for most who have lots of opinions on this topic, few are doing that. I have to include myself in that in the sense that I have only listened to some of the deeper ideas because I’m not a doctor or virologist or infectious disease specialist. I trust those who are know what they are talking about. It appears to be a field where experts work together collaboratively from the world over and mostly agree on things. Who am I to question them on things they know a hundreds of thousands of times more information regarding? What kind of arrogance does it take to believe someone knows better then them in a field in which they are fully uneducated? Quite a lot in my opinion. that doesn’t mean I don’t question them or anything but that I respect that I am not qualified the way those experts are to understand pandemics.
I’m a teacher and I can’t tell you how many times I hear people sound off on topics within education they obviously don’t understand. I respect differences of opinions in general (at least I respect that reasonable people are going to have differences of opinions), but I don’t respect opinions not based on data or information that is valid and reliable and accurate.
as far as the children go, I dont think they are superspreaders. There has been daycares open for HCW and other workers during all of this. I believe our local Y provided this. Also schools are open in other countries and any information about I have seen has been more about teacher(s) having it then the children; i.e. if the children have it would it spread to their parents too, as well as the other kids. I wish there was more studies on this, but with most kids asymptomatic its hard. My friend’s husband got sick in March. he tested positive for the antibodies. the 3 kids who went skiing with him also have them None of them had any sign of being sick.
There is a theory that the reason most kids are ok is because of the MMR vaccine (the R part), that might be somehow “working” to fight off bad infections. I do wonder if the kids coming down with the new syndrome have this vaccine or not.
Think back to the fun(?) discussions/disagreements that we had about masks back in March on the other thread. The [US] scientific experts were saying no masks needed; others said masks can help prevent spread.
The “majority” scientific view in the US was no masks. Yet, those who rejected that view and wore masks were potentially better off.
Exactly, which reinforces my point. If I recall, yourself and others on cc (rightfully in hindsight) rejected the US majority scientific opinion and I assume that you did so based on what others were saying.
Are they also willing to forgo medical treatment if they become ill so as not to risk shortening the lives of the healthcare workers who will be required to them?
I ventured out today - took my daughter to DMV to get her Real ID, got gas, and went to the grocery store. The car and pedestrian traffic seems to have gone back to normal. Everyone wearing masks everywhere. The DMV was interesting. They are taking people who already had appointments, but not making new appointments. They also have a “standby line” in case they can fit more people in. I can’t believe it, but they are doing a really amazing job. Strict social distancing with marked spots outside, several employees wandering around with clipboards, forms and pens, checking in with people. They let people in only a few at a time. One guy had his mask pulled down, and was reprimanded in a drill sergeant tone by one of the employees. Lots of marked spots inside. I was impressed. The gas station said they require masks inside. The grocery store was well stocked and had one way aisles. This is the longest I’ve worn a mask. Definitely not my favorite thing to do! Sweaty face syndrome lol.
My husband has said that all the conflicting information has gotten to him. First , flatten the curve, now its keep the cases down until we find a cure/treatment. First no masks, now masks. First it was surfaces, then surfaces are not as important. Gloves, no gloves. When we first went into lockdown, it was not meant to be for months and months , and since the cases were growing so fast, it was almost like we were too late, but the time midmarch came. I remember the first few cases here, and how they were isolating them and doing initial contact tracing. But we lost that battle fast.
The question both he and I face every day is what would happen if we got this. He is 60 and I am 56. He is a heavier set male , which seems to be more at risk , as i am an average weight Female. How sick would we get.? Would we be one of those that survive but are sick for 60 days, or would it be “no worse than a bad flu”. Would we die? Or would we barely know. Would we want to go to the hospital earlier than later. Remember that to flatten the curve, stay home unless you were almost dying. I read that the reason why deaths are less in S. Korea and Hong Kong is that people are treated early in the disease.
so we wear masks when out in public. But at the same time we have started to see our friends again. A decision that the friends and us are both making. We can contact trace whom we have been in contact with except when we have had our masks on in stores I tend to go back to retail (trying to help the economy) but avoid places like Walmart Not crazy about the Grocery store either at times. I would consider going to Disney or the like , but I would wear my mask and wash my hands.
But every time I cough or sneeze, or just dont feel good, I panic. Do I have it. ? Back in March and April I was very much scared. Now, I am not as scared, even reading about people who are/were very sick, or people who died., but still get scared. Its a balancing act.
Our DMV is still closed. There are some things that can be done online. But there are others that just can’t be.
I’m hoping when they open, they will prioritize appointments for people who MUST go to a DMV office to complete their business. Perhaps they can set up computer kiosks to help those who really can do this via computer…and leave the DMV lines to those who really need them.
Our DMV has extended all deadlines for license, registration renewals out 180 days.
But that doesn’t help someone moving here from OOS who needs to transfer plates and license to this state. That has to be done…in person…and hopefully before the OOS stuff expires.
I’m hopeful that in a few weeks we’ll have a good handle on whether younger children are infectious. It would be good news indeed if they were not very infectious. Like @Midwest67 I’ve read encouraging information, but nobody is saying we know for sure.
IMO, there is no difference between addressing someone inside vs outside the CC community with these disrespectful terms. Differentiating between the two encourages an elitist membership that has chased so many away.
My friend went to the store to buy a sympathy card. There was not one sympathy card to be had. Plenty of get well cards, wedding cards, etc., but no sympathy cards. That put everything into perspective.
One big reason why scientists are tentatively thinking that kids aren’t spreaders is, if they were, we should have seen outbreaks from kids spreading the disease, and we haven’t. We know of many, many superspreading events and none have involved kids spreading the disease.
