I was listening to earlier twiv and while the virus was raging NY in the early days the USA had the ability to 200 tests a day (CDC and all that), 200 a day in the entire country of the USA, I despise this idea that NY is picked as a scapegoat for a tactical response by a hostile executive branch of govt. It is so unfortunate that an illiterate part of the population is unable to parse this scenario and is happy to create further antagonism within the country. It is more than convenient for the failed leadership to fuel this kind of fire as a distraction.
“Correct, density in NY was a big factor. But the other factor was that millions of people come into NY from all over the world (especially Europe) and brought the virus. And there was NO testing.”
Yes, I agree there were many factors that created the perfect storm. And yes, I was not in fact being derogatory towards NY. They did make a great showing of how density plays into spread though which was my.point regarding Maine vs Florida.
In my own Maryland we have our own hotspots in our denser and more mobile areas. After nursing homes there is a clear delineation regarding the virus and urban areas. We have a county with 10 (7 of those in a nursing home) cases and a county 150 miles away with 15,000 cases.
This virus spreads so much more easily with foreign travel, mass transit, urban housing, etc.
I appreciate you giving me the benefit of the doubt regarding my intentions when referencing NY.
I guess I would be a lot more impressed by a percentage of protesters out wearing masks if at the same time many weren’t destroying cars, throwing bottles and rocks at police, burning buildings and stealing TV’s. It does seem to be advantageous when doing criminal acts (rioting) to wear a face covering though so it perhaps serves a dual purpose.
It’s funny how our discussions vary depending on the people out either wearing or not wearing a mask. Either social distancing or not. People walking down the street, at stores shopping, at restaurants eating, at beaches, at bars, in pools, playing sports, protesting, rioting.
Does anyone else think that Cuomo’s promotion of his daughter’s video contest was foolish? He had her on day after day, and insisted on showing finalist videos about wearing masks. He wanted viewers to vote on their favorite. Ridiculous!
I referenced the calculation method directly in the post that was quoted (I linked to an earlier post). I also sent a more detailed explanation to @suteiki77 by PM. It is not tough to figure out, people can choose to agree with the methodology or not.
I think everyone should be engaging in physical distancing and wearing masks when outside. But a significant difference between, on the one hand, people shopping or having pool parties or watching car races and, on the other, people protesting individuals being killed by police officers is that the latter is a fundamental right protected under the First Amendment.
I hope (but do not think) that everyone who is concerned about the pandemic-related shutdowns’ effects on less privileged individuals and groups also is concerned about racism, and institutional violence disproportionately meted out against black and brown people.
Heavy foreign travel, mass transit, dense urban living and no testing ability also describes San Francisco, for example, which has fewer than 10 deaths per 100k capita compared to NYC’s rate of over 150 deaths. Pretending this was a plot against NY by a cruel federal government doesnt help us learn the lessons of what SF did right and NYC did wrong. I think we can all agree the federal response was a disaster, but some states and cities overcame that and others exacerbated it, and we best know the difference for next time.
I couldn’t agree more. The First Amendment provides little protection for religious liberty (hardly even mentions religion) but clearly protects the desire to express rage by burning down police stations and stealing air fryers from WalMart.
As an aside, the First Amendment protects us against government limits on our freedom of expression, but it doesn’t prevent a private employer from setting its own rules.
I’d like to hope no one is supportive of these protesters for anything.
Those protesting peacefully, blocking streets, or whatever, are fine. What they are protesting for was/is horrid, including the fact that there are so many of those events happening over time. Change should have already happened, but it hasn’t. It needs to.
Those feeling they can destroy totally innocent peoples’ businesses, cars, lives, etc are causing many (at least in my segment of the planet) to reinforce their stereotypes of groups (negative, of course) and soften up toward the police. It’s hurting the cause, not helping it. How can they expect any sort of change?
It also has folks around here glad they don’t live in cities and wondering why anyone would want to live in them due to Covid + riots at this point - traffic, crowds, HCOL also brought into the conversation, but those are always there.
“As far as face masks versus social distancing by at least 6 feet, the face masks do not replace social distancing,” said Peter Gulick, an infectious disease specialist and professor of medicine at Michigan State University.
He added that makeshift masks may be useful in situations like grocery stores and pharmacies where you cannot always guarantee the 6-foot rule, but these masks should not be used as a replacement for the rule.”
H reports that the first night of outdoor dining (Chicagoland) went well.
Sales-wise, carry out remained strong (pandemic-normal) & the additional sales provided by patio dining was very welcome.
I spoke to one of the restaurant managers where I work & he said there were only three tables occupied on the patio all night long. All regular customers. Sat for hours drinking & eating.
He said it was an awful lot of work for the sales because they are schlepping all the furniture in & out of the restaurant at the beginning & end of the shift.
At noon, LA restaurants were permitted to open to inside dining. By evening, the downtown restaurants were dealing with broken windows, a mob outside, urine/feces ‘cocktails’ being thrown and the threat of worse.
Coming to a city/state near you. Unless they just choose to ignore outbreaks. Which, unfortunately is likely. But hey - what’s another couple of hundreds of thousands of dead.
“But new clusters of the coronavirus have been identified in recent days, leading the government to close not only schools but also parks and museums — and people are being urged again not to gather in big numbers.”
Ugh, NJ beaches are open and I see so many friends and my kids’ friends on FB doing their normal Jersey beach thing. Within inches face to face laughing/kissing with no mask in groups of 5-10… Yep, just like any other summer.
Johns Hopkins U podcast, Public Health On Call has a recent short episode (about 15 minutes) with tips from a psychologist on managing overwhelming feelings re: things that are out of one’s control.
