Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

Interesting article where the Norwegian PM indicates that she feels that she might have overreacted in shutting down the country, including the schools.

I am really encouraged by some of the studies coming out of Europe highlighted in this week’s Economist. Bulgaria has had some success with senior hour in public parks in urban areas. The UK has a helpful study of which jobs involve the most risk of transmission, some of which surprised me (security guards and plumbers, besides Health care workers and nursing attendants). That could be useful in phasing in return to work. I wish we would all devote more time to lessons learned and creative best practices instead of sniping at each other.

Plumbers is an interesting one. I wonder if they are exposed to the virus in fecal matter in pipes.

Lol…love it! ?

I would add one more:

The isolation competition

^^^^ Post of the Day. AND- the Sanitation Competition

Should competitors be limited to just one category?

Y’all missed:

the It’s Way Overblown Competition

and

I’m Out Doing More than You Are Competition

To anyone else wanting to argue/debate/whatever with me via pm. I’m not your candidate. Go play on FB or somewhere. I’ll just delete the pm’s like any other spam - no response necessary.

One positive outcome of this COVID event is that people are spending time with their families.
We see so many families out and about, and it’s really nice.
In our neighborhood, pre-COVID, I didn’t see many people when I walked around. Now there are tons of people out, with the kids riding bikes and scooters.
Our favorite bike paths are busier than ever, which is a drag for us, but great that people are getting out.

We had our Sunday trans-Atlantic zoom family meeting and now H is outside chatting with his friend, like he’s done every Sunday. I exchanged Amish Friendship Bread starter with a friend who gave me yogurt starter. I can live with this part of it!

But I was listening to TWiV today and they were all talking about missing things, like flying, dining in restaurants, etc. Ah well…

In funnier news, H and I watched “Outbreak” last night. It is leaving Netflix today. I remember seeing it back when it came out, but it struck me how far fetched and histrionic movies were in the 80s and 90s. I don’t think Dustin Hoffman ever stopped yelling, lol. He should make another movie with Cuba Gooding, Jr., they have good chemistry.

Plumbers, that’s surprising. They spend time in poorly ventilated areas, but it’s not obvious to me how those poorly ventilated areas get filled with viruses to infect them. I don’t think scientists have discovered entire covid viruses in the stool, so I discount that theory.

Perhaps if they go into someone’s house to repair the plumbing, and the resident there is unknowingly infected and contagious, the virus could be everywhere in the house (in the air and on surfaces) and therefore easy to get while working in the house.

I concur. I have run into many families while out on hikes with my oldest son. For him and I these numberous hikes have given us a great chance to talk about so many things as he prepared to enter college this fall. I have to say I really appreciate these moments and unfortunately they would not have been happening without this virus. That is certainly one good thing to come from this God awful experience.

MODERATOR NOTE:
Please avoid debating, calling each other out, and bickering. Several posts edited/deleted.

Hello all! As May wraps up, so will this thread. I’ve posted a [thread for June](Coronavirus thread for June - Parent Cafe - College Confidential Forums). Tomorrow I will lock this thread and post another announcement here. In the meantime, let’s wrap up the discussion here.

Thanks!

P.S. I concur with the silver lining just mentioned. I seem to be having a renewed relationship with my family because we are figuring out how to spend more time with each other.

Did anyone else watch Bob and Doug (the astronauts) enter the space station and hug the guys already there? I’m not a “huggy” person generally, but I’d love to be able to hug someone now.

You could be correct. Then we would expect people who repair refrigerators and dishwashers to be equally at risk.

interesting from a friend who has some underlying conditions (but not diabetes , heart disease, and like). She was Social distancing for the longest time. Now she is doing Distance socializing. So will be outdoors with friends, and even eat out on a patio. I think the warmer weather has caused people to start to lax, but likely if most keep outdoors and wear masks when in public and indoors I think we can be ok. Dont think we will drop the cases, but maybe not huge jumps. Meanwhile there was an article about Emory hospital and how they were successful with ventilators.

I have no idea why, but electricians were at less risk, according to the British study.

This is a great idea.
