Good to hear that @MaineLonghorn and great you and your sister are on the same page.
Cuomo had to issue a new EO extending it. He just did it today.
@rosered55 exactly! My dad agreed to hospice after we carefully explained to him what it meant. Then not long after that, he started asking for more interventions and treatments that are just not permitted under the arrangement. It’s been an ongoing problem. He wants the great care and benefits provided by hospice but then tries to circumvent the agreement. My sister has to have a heart-to-heart with him every two weeks or so. “Dad, you don’t have to be on hospice, but this is what you will lose…” Then he relents but starts up again after awhile. Sigh. TBH, I’m glad I’m 2,500 miles away.
OK, I will get off this subject now!
Do they have a large sign on their front door:
EMS go away! We won’t be transported to the hospital!
I bet they don’t. I bet they are not going to turn away medical help.
Right. Just don’t know whether any of the regions have made more progress since the chart was last updated. (There’s no date on the chart.)
The sign is not on the front door, Cardinal Fang, it is on the refrigerator as that is where EMS has been told (nationwide, I think) to look for a DNR. Moreover, the facility usually knows not to call EMS to begin with, but does call next of kin. It happens all the time. DNR orders are also often posted on the bathroom mirrors of patients who do not have a refrigerator in their room. Some patients want pain meds, but often will refuse transport, even if it is called if the family demands it
@fretfulmother and others - if you can stand one more post about sunchokes —
I love them and have made them into a bisque-like soup. But I learned to stop at one bowl per day, lol. The active ingredient is inulin, which is very good for you but is digested in your small intestine and that takes a bit more effort.
They taste a bit like artichoke hearts and don’t need to be peeled, like ginger root does. You can eat them raw or cooked. I’ve grown them by just sticking them in a pot. The plant is native to North America, grows and spreads easily (watch out!), and has pretty yellow/gold flowers.
They usually show up at the farmer’s market in the fall, when the plant dies back to its knobby root. If you plant them then, they won’t sprout until spring. I’ve grown ginger root too, it’s pretty easy! Need to try turmeric. I have some outside, but there are lots of varieties and I don’t think mine are the culinary ones.
Before coronavirus, my mother (age 83) was very active in her church. I would say church was her primary social outlet. However, she says she will not go back any time soon even if they start having in person services again. Recently we were discussing some churches that were opening up even though it wasn’t recommended. She said she didn’t know what they were thinking, and I responded that some of them said God would protect them. My mother replied, “God gave them a brain - they should try using it!”. Lol!
Seriously though, I’m glad that she won’t go back now, but I do worry about her being lonely. She lives by herself, and before this she would go to church at least twice a week and have lunch with friends about twice a week. A number of people are staying in touch with her by phone and email, but of course that isn’t the same.
Ahh. Don’t know, but I don’t think the tracing part is fully up and running yet. I believe they are still hiring, training and working on the logistics, etc.
Thank you for the comments about sunchokes. As I mentioned above, I was inspired to sign up for a CSA again this year because of the pandemic and its effects on the economy and the food supply and chain. Some of my trips to the grocery store recently and the contents of the first week’s CSA share remind me of the value of being flexible about what I eat. I prefer routine to variety, so these vegetables definitely will challenge my comfort level.

No good; you’ve already had the EMS folks walk in to a house of contagion.
From Wisconsin’s COVID-19 update today:
The largest increase in new cases today come from Milwaukee County, which increased by 94, and Brown County, with an increase of 57. More than 30 percent of tests in Brown County in the past 24 hours came back positive. An outbreak at a meat packing plant in Green Bay has significantly increased the number of positive cases in Brown County, which have now reached 1,834 in the county. That’s a rate of 706 cases per 100,000 residents — far higher than the second-highest rate, 403 in Milwaukee County.
Yesterday I went for an in office doctor visit because I’ve been feeling like my ears are clogged for a few weeks, plus an infrequent light dry congestion that causes an occasional cough. I also sometimes have felt like my upper chest was hollow. Absolutely no problems breathing or any other symptoms. None of the meds (Flonase, Sudafed, Claritin) have made a difference.
I parked in the underground garage and took a solitary elevator up to my floor. An employee was waiting behind a desk to screen me and confirm my appointment. She put on her mask as I came out of the elevator (I was wearing mask and gloves). No temperature check.
I was the only one in the small waiting room. Every other seat was blocked off with a sign. The receptionist was in a mask.
After a couple of minutes, a nurse came to fetch me. She had me stop at a scale
then took me to an exam room. She took my temp with a touch forehead thermometer (97) and wiped it off afterwards before hanging it up. She was able to get a reading through the glove with the finger clip thingy (98 oxygen) and also took my blood pressure (a bit high).
A couple of minutes after she left the doctor started into the room with no mask. Before I could say anything, she said, “Oops, forgot my mask” and turned around. I’m glad she was not my regular doctor who is out on maternity leave because this did not inspire confidence! Was she walking around without a mask?
Anyway, she checked my ears which were totally clear and listened to my chest which was fine. I kept my mask on the entire time. At the end of my appointment, the nurse led me out to a back exit where I had to open the door myself, then back down the elevator and safely home.
We couldn’t figure out where my symptoms were coming from except perhaps stress or possibly a bit of an allergy. And I did get the swab test a couple of weeks ago. So I guess I’ll just ignore everything and wait for it to go away.
I don’t know how accurate these are but they are very interesting (and for me, quite disheartening):
EMS properly assumes every case is potential COVID ( and lots of other nasty bugs too) and has PPE. Morticians are also assuming all were covid and taking related precautions.
EMS properly assumes every case is potential COVID ( and lots of other nasty bugs too) and has PPE.
EMS workers are still short on PPE, training for EMS workers is lacking, and PPE is not perfect.

Wonder why there was such a run on the bank this particular day. I don’t get out much, but haven’t seen reports on bank lines in our area.
No bank run, at least by the traditional definition… just fewer employees able to help the usual number of customers, since there is only one drive through teller window and the lobby isn’t open.
Weekends still seem to be the busiest times. I suppose that even though people are working from home, they don’t want to leave their desk/computer/phone for very long. DH likes his Saturday routine, but I think after this morning’s unsettling experience, he will take the 20 minute break from work and go during the week (less of a line, if any).
Elon Musk tweeted that he will move Tesla HQ and future projects to Texas or Nevada. He is suing Alameda County for its SIP orders which won’t allow his factory there to open.
The NYS info is interesting. S1 and his family live in the Finger Lakes region, which is doing well in hospitalizations, but, like most of the state, not so great in testing and contact tracing. On Fri, S said his employer said people could come into work starting on 5/18, but that was before PAUSE got moved back to June. He was also given the option to continue to WFH and was planning to anyway since they’re not ready to send their small kids back to daycare at this point.
You don’t say.
‘72 COVID Positive After Attending Large Event’
“Two weeks ago, roughly 1,500 people gathered at the Capitol in Madison to protest Gov. Tony Evers’ safer-at-home order, saying the order violated their freedom and was problematic for businesses.
Some scheduled speakers said they were not afraid to die or afraid of the coronavirus, with many hosting signs calling the pandemic a hoax.
On Friday, the state Department of Health Services said there have been 1,986 confirmed cases since the weekend of the rally. Of those, 72 people reported having attended a large gathering, according to The Progressive. However, people who tested positive were not asked specifically if they had attended the protest in Madison.
This is a shift in how contact tracers, the people who meet with individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to find out where they have been, who they have been in contact with and what places outside their homes they have visited, approached positive individuals following the April 7 election.
In the weeks following the election, those who tested positive were specifically asked if they had participated in the election as either a worker or a voter. However, no such specific question was asked of those who tested positive in the two weeks since the protest.
When asked why health officials had asked people who tested positive for the virus in the weeks following the April 7 election but not specially about attending the protest, DHS Sec. Andrea Palm did not provide a reason. Instead, during a conference call with reporters, she reiterated the work of contact tracers.”
