Doesn’t that then beg the question, how many ‘completely empty’ facilities exist in the state? (Ans: likely none.) So then it gets to separating a floor, or wing or a building. (And the odds of an empty free-standing building existing are also practically nil.)
So, as a practical matter, that leaves us with a separate wing or floor for those that need the money.
We have enough other options here, besides nursing homes. Some areas are using empty hotels. The National Guard has set up facilities in tents and convention centers (they’re tearing down a large portion of the one set up in Chicago due to lack of use, but still leaving 500 beds). Some cities have previously shuttered hospitals they are looking at reopening.
The “double bubble”–pair up with one other household to expand your world a little bit–causes its own stresses. Who do you pick? What if they don’t pick you back?
I posted the original article on CA Gov Newsom ‘enticing’ nursing homes and AL facility to take COVID patients. Hey…It would net 30K a month.
@ucbalumnus At a time when optics matter almost as much as science, the decision to make such a statement, and publish that paper, makes it seem like certain areas of our State are completely out of touch with the effects of their behaviors.
SMH…wish it were a joke.
CA has lots of coast line. Lots of harbors. Why not just rent a cruise ship…I hear they aren’t very busy these days. At 30K per month/per cabin I’m sure they’d love the income. What could go wrong?
Or you just have a socially distant neighborhood happy hour like many posters on these boards have done and include everyone. I guess I get the children’s desire for closer interactions, though.
DD had to stop by his bank this morning (drive through only). He said the car line was around the building and partially up the street. TWO shouting matches broke out (with folks getting out of their cars to engage) when two new cars either inadvertently or deliberately cut the line (he said from where he was sitting it was hard to tell what the intent was, but he got the feeling one of the two cutting of the line was deliberate). The bank sent two employees outside to direct the traffic/monitor the line. Tempers are at boiling point.
Yeah, I get all that, but none of those options apply to the memo which was directed to the state’s "Adult and Senior Care licensees…’ In other words, you gotta have an existing state/local license which means an existing, approved facility.
Obviously, if Gov wanted to take over the Moscone Convention Center in SF or the Staples Center in LA he could as the Army Corps to build beds there.
Ha, that’s my feeling. And what’s the hurry anyway? I’m not in any rush to go back and sit at home.
I love my family, but being home almost 24/7 with all of them makes me appreciate the time I spent listening to audiobooks, preCovid, during my daily commute. Not that I miss the commute, but the alone time was nice. Maybe that explains the ridiculously long line at the Starbucks drive-through I always see these days when I venture out. It doesn’t matter the time of day, there is always a crazy long line and I never understood who would wait just for a cup of coffee. Perhaps they are enjoying a podcast or book!
I also enjoyed my time at the bank drive thru the other day. Wait was only about 15 minutes, but I listened to a pod, so it was all good.
NYS PAUSE extended to June 6th. If regions hit the benchmarks before hand partial opening can begin. Iirc, that would be manufacturing and construction at first.
There are 10 regions and these are the benchmarks.
A 14-day decline in hospitalizations and hospital deaths (or fewer than 15 new hospitalizations and five deaths in a three-day average);
New hospitalizations remain less than two per 100,000 residents on a three-day average;
Hospitals maintain 30 percent vacancy of their bed capacity for any resurgence, including intensive care units;
Monthly COVID-19 testing of at least 30 of every 1,000 residents in a region;
At least 30 "contact tracers" per 100,000 residents;
Hospitals in each region must have a 90-day stockpile of personal protective equipment.
My sister said that when my uncle and aunt came to see my dad, they were good about staying a long way away (they sat outside). When the subject of church came up, my dad said, “Well, I hope you have a good turnout tomorrow!” Ack. My sister tried to talk to my uncle - “You know, it’s kind of like trying to go through a low-water crossing after it’s rained. Yeah, you might be OK, but you might not. And if you’re washed away, you’re going to be putting people at risk who try to rescue you.” She said that argument got nowhere with him. She doesn’t think Dad is physically up to going. We’re just hoping he doesn’t tell Mom she should.
It reminds me of little kids - “You can’t tell me what I can’t do!”
My mother was all excited that her church (catholic) is reopening. The archbishop said to check with individual churches so I went online for her. No masses this weekend. Next weekend they have one on Saturday (usually 2) and I think 4 on Sunday. You have to reserve a spot for your family, and they are only having 10 families in the church and 4-5 more in the cry room. I think there are 10,000 families (or maybe 10,000 people) who belong to this church. So that means about 100x5 masses per weekend can go to church.
Honestly, why bother at that point. They could easily zigzag the rows and have 3x that many without anyone sitting within 20 feet of each other.
With respect, as long as adults have no dependants counting on them and have made it clear that no medical interventions are authorized, then how people choose to spend their twilight days should be up to them. I would rather die of COVID fully enjoying my life and loved ones than eek out a few extra months in a nursing home.
@emilybee, yes, my sister told them that. Fortunately, she and I are on the same page on all of this. I told her I will talk to Dad if she thinks it will help.
Of course adults can do what they want. However, I’ve found (from personal experience) that adults, including very old ones, sometimes say “I want no medical intervention” or “I want to die at home” and then, when a health crisis occurs, they ask for medical treatment and want to be transported to a hospital.
