Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

Very interesting @“Cardinal Fang”

There is a very large Chinatown and Koreatown in Flushing - it’s right next to both the National Tennis Center and Citi Field (previously Shea Stadium.) Corona is adjacent
to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park (where the Worlds Fair was) just on the other side of the NTC and the park from Flushing.

A snippet from a Politico article today re: Illinois…

Illinois is working to imitate Massachusetts’ contact tracing collaborative, and the state has hired a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employee who was an expert at the agency’s outbreak intelligence service.

“We think that we can have a massive contact tracing up in the next few weeks,” Pritzker said. “In order to reopen businesses, in order for people to feel confident, we have to make sure we’re constantly growing those efforts.”

Hey, hey, hey, @MomofWildChild please no personal attacks. There are so many useful points of view on this thread. If someone’s posts irritate you, you can put them on ignore – voila, no irritation. One person’s irritating post is another’s gospel truth. There is no one and only one right perspective.

We do want some balance of opinions and views here, don’t we?

Balance of opinions and views is one thing, personally calling out someone and mocking them is another.

I believe I am permitted to disagree and the poster’s viewpoints have been posted many, many times. I opined on what was clearly posted previously. I didn’t name call, which I’ve been chastised for in the past. Some of us are tired of the COVID-shaming by not just posters here but those on other social media. I believe my post was entirely appropriate even if you disagree with it.

I think there is room for opposing views. I like to hear both sides. I appreciate that there are two sides and that as an American I’m able to hear them without retribution. (Just watched North Korea on National Geographic last night) ?

I talked to my daughter today. She has been furloughed for 4 weeks now, she has not received any unemployment money yet! I’m happy that her expenses are low and that she is a saver. I asked if she needed any money but she continues to insist that she’s fine. As she is furloughed and expects to be called back to her job, she is not counted in the unemployment figures.

I wonder how much the resistance to wear masks stems from the fact that so many “experts”, including Dr. Fauci, initially preached Don’t wear masks. Masks don’t protect you.

And, even now, there’s plenty of people saying that wearing a mask is better at keeping the virus IN than in keeping it OUT. So, some people hear If I’m not sick, no need to wear a mask., completely ignoring the possibility that they may be an asymptomatic carrier.

Are you attacking me, now? Sounds like it to me!

In my little area of the world, the neighborhood has been up in arms because we have turned into Party Central after dark (coastal San Diego). Hundreds of complaints, pictures and videos sent to the police and city. We counted 800 to 900 cars/ hour coming South into the neighborhood. The main problem is they have closed off the parking lots which have the public trash cans. People are partying in their cars, on top of their cars, drag racing, cruising with their sub woofers and in groups on the Cliffs. But they are leaving trash, urine and poop everywhere!!

So finally, City Council threatened to just close down the street/ park and the police started showing up about 10pm and going up and down with bull horns disbanding the groups. They cannot legally do anything about people sitting in cars or ‘cruising’. But I think we are finally back towards normal. They must have found a new place to congregate.

If those of you who enjoy squabbling want this thread shut down, you will succeed. Respect does not including calling out other posters by name or picking fights. It you’re that offended by another poster, ignore them or take it to PM.

How’s the smell from the rotting red tide/bioluminescence? Hope it stays calmer.

For a bright side of all this, I am back to helping out cat adoptions at our shelter. We have a rule that only one adopter/family at a time. We cannot force them to wear masks but many do. I wear mine when we have adopters coming in. If there is a cleaner in the room, we ask if they want to remain or leave. No more than 10 people allowed in the shelter at once. Today 2 people showed up for a 10am appointment, as there was a miscommunication. One had to wait. To close an adoption it is done contactless. the adopter puts in their credit card information themselves, and all paperwork is emailed.
BUT for the good news!! some of our more difficult cats, shy cats, long term residents, senior cats, are getting adopted!!! (of course there is a waiting list for the kittens as well). Keeping fingers crossed they all found their final homes. We also adopt dogs. I am afraid that once people go back to work, some will get returned.
NOW for the not so good news… we are also seeing cats being “returned” that were adopted years ago because the owners no longer have a place to live. We are working to find these cats new homes as soon as we can. One came back and went out the same day. The owner was looking for anyone to help until they go back on their feet, but could not find anyone, and had to bring back.

oh and today was a very nice day. We did a family walk. Most people were not wearing masks when walking and it was not always easy being 6ft apart since it was crowded. I think being outdoors people tend not to wear the masks. I did read somewhere that outdoor transmission is not as big a concern. I do see in stores and other indoor places people are wearing their masks.

Glad to hear this. We signed up to foster but never got called. I can’t adopt permanently due to allergies, but would have tolerated them and welcomed a companion for a few months for DD in SIP. Some shelters around here are saying the need may be greater later because they aren’t currently able to get thorough required health inspections on all their foster animals as vets are only working on an emergency basis. So many animals had to remain in the shelter.

Glad to hear the furry friends are finding homes. While we are prepared to give them a wonderful temporary home, nothing beats a forever home.

Of course, what will really cause this thread to be shut down, is if those posters who get their noses out of joint about someone else’s post use this thread to chastise, admonish or otherwise complain about those posts. You find someone’s post to be “offensive”, send them a PM, ignore them, block them, whatever. But to carry on publicly about it accomplishes nothing other than to foment confrontation. Everyone on this thread is supposed to be an adult. Enough of the finger pointing and complaining about the tenor of someone’s post. Deal with it like adults.

Question for those of you who are temporarily working from home and have pets: How do you think your dog or cat will react when you start leaving the house more?

I predict that my dog will not be happy if I need to start working at the office again. But she’s 13 1/2 years old, so I might be able to stretch the working from home to last until the end of her life.

Perspective from my son’s ambulance:

“It’s not the potential Covid cases we worry about, we can prepare for those and have post-call decontamination protocols. It’s the thirty-year-old male overdose patient that wakes up angry, rips the NARCAN IV out of his arm, then flails blood all over the place.”

My neighbors are having a pool party. 5 cars pulled up. I don’t want to be a snitch. I’m not even sure the police would get involved but businesses that open in defiance of the rules get fined and get their utilities shut off. Just saying.

Just heard from my lad who likely had it in western NC. He got the bill from his attempt to get a free test. It’s in the $2000 range. He’s going to call tomorrow and see if they will reduce it at all.

I’m still furious that they took him in for a chest x-ray, etc, BO was 92 at the time, and never gave him a test to let him know for sure what he had - just told him he likely had it after the xray, what to watch out for, etc. He even called ahead of time telling them what he was experiencing and asking if they had tests - was told yes.

No “free” test, instead he was given other expensive tests, no official diagnosis other than lower respiratory infection, and an unofficial diagnosis of “you likely have it, here’s a note to get you off work, here’s what to expect” and similar.

Seems to me to be a combo of wanting to keep numbers lower and their income higher.

On top of that, he still - several weeks later - hasn’t had his lungs recover. He tells me if he does nothing it seems to be getting better, but as soon as he does something - like clearing weeds for an hour outside - he can’t keep going. Plus, he works online (talking). He’s been trying to keep up doing that for his days and found out multiple hours still affect him.

We’ve heard from others who used to be runners - race runners - that they can no longer run at all.

Will this ever get better or is what he’s like now his new normal? Upper 20s with absolutely no pre-existing conditions for him.

And did he even ever have it? He now owes 2+k and doesn’t have that official answer. That’s just the hospital bill. I’m sure the Dr bill is coming, plus who knows what else.

Other folks can go out and catch this if they want to. The rest of us Creeklanders still plan to hide - though med school lad goes back in a week with a very healthy respect for it and trying to avoid it. It may be impossible for him.
