This would explain why he has to tell everyone how smart he is and how stupid they are.
He sounds just like the couple of folks I know IRL with “stuck on me” syndrome. Want to know about anything? (Hurricane paths? Gov’t? Education? Nutrition? Whatever?) They have the answer. It’s the only right answer. Experts are dumb. If only “they” could rule the world. They have to keep telling people this because apparently we’re so dumb we forget.
I don’t know why any of these folks have followers TBH, but to each their own. Our family rolls our eyes and usually chuckles making some jokes about whatever the topic is at the time. Or, if we’re short on time we’ll tell each other about the encounter with “same stuff, different day.”
The delusion that we can control everything that happens to us in 2020 is not helpful. Hopefully, we can take some actions that may delay or temporarily impede the spread of a disease. But they may or may not work, the virus may mutate, and/or the costs may be unsustainable for the period required. We are not omnipotent, no matter how much we like to believe otherwise.
Our son video called from Seattle for Father’s Day and reported on his haircut that he got Saturday. The shop only allowed in one customer at a time for half hour appointments by reservation, dry hair only, both barber and customer wearing masks and fresh gowns, and I think barber was gloved. Son (who is very cautious) was pleased with the protocol - and the haircut. Son (who is also very frugal) was also pleased with the independent shop experience vs his normal Sports Clips. So a silver lining to this cloud is that he may stay with this new barber.
In general, both Seattle and San Diego are relatively mask observant.
I would like a quick survey-as I have mentioned previously, I wear masks for the short sojourn I make to indoor shops. I have never had to wear one for 8 hours, though the retail clerks I talk with have. So how many here have been wearing masks for 8 hours a day, health care workers aside ( since frankly that is a long standing job requirement and I assume one you knew going into the field). ? Anyone? Or are we all just part of the set with an hour here or there of mask wearing?
I fully agree with you. Out of curiosity, has anyone seen updated economic numbers out of Europe? I think it’s too soon to know South and Latin America’s numbers.
Regardless, where the virus goes, economic issues follow. It’s human nature. Some folks don’t care, but many do. I seem to recall reading for this virus it’s the wealthier spending less. Economically that’s a big deal.
We know so much more now, including how to open some (many?) things safely. Most outdoor things are fine with social distancing (masks if needed). Most shopping things are fine with masks, social distancing, and hand washing. Yet there are just too many who MUST be free and by doing so, well, anyone can look at the numbers. (sigh) The numbers themselves will drive many to cut back - and there goes the economy.
It perplexes me too that some people insist on opening up the economy, and don’t want any mask mandates.
I’m not walking into a retail store without a mask on. And if I walk in and most people aren’t wearing masks, I’ll walk right out again. There’s stuff I need that I’d like to go shopping for, and mask wearing is what will make that possible. That, and the little vial of hand sanitizer that I keep in my purse.
I certainly don’t need a mask in my own house or out on our farm. I always wear one in public, but with shopping once every week or three (pending what we’re doing with FIL) it isn’t much.
I asked med school lad about wearing masks for a longer period of time and he told me it’s odd at first, but then you get used to it. I suspect that’s true for any job, not just his.
Dh is a teacher, and I told him yesterday that he can quit at the last minute if he feels like the plan they put in place is insufficient. Of course, he doesn’t want to do that to his teammates. He did say that if he gets the chance to do full-time remote teaching that he’ll jump at it.
If I work a carry out shift, I take frequent breaks from wearing my neck gaiter over my mouth & nose.
The manager I usually work with will take his mask off frequently, or wear it over his mouth only, sometimes chin only.
H reports the BOH at the restaurant has a lot of trouble being 100% mask compliant in the heat of the kitchen during the rush. He sees the masks over the mouth only, or chin only.
They are short a line cook, a position difficult to fill pre-pandemic, and no one is in the mood to be too strict. Gentle reminders, but no one is getting written up or sent home.
My daughter has to wear mask all day long, 8 hours a day. But when she sits down in front of a computer which she gets to do a few hours a day as part of her job, she pulls the mask below her nose, which most people do when no one is around and they need some much needed fresh air. It’s not comfortable but she gets used to it.
Apparently my friend who works in the lab is doing the same thing, wearing mask all day but here and there people take a little break from full cover when they are alone.
What these type of flawed articles fail to recognize is a) the economy was never “shutdown” and essential businesses were open the whole time, b) the government infused money into the economy to “weather the storm” for non-essential businesses and their employees that were effected by the pandemic, and c) if the virus was left to run its course, unchecked, there would have been mass hysteria as millions would have been very sick and dead in a few short months. How smoothly do you think the economy would have run in that type of environment?
Lastly, I’m not going to rely on a bitcoin-loving, libertarian, anti-government advocate to influence my opinion that we were all “stupid” for attempting to control and contain the spread of CV-19.
A coworker who is getting married in August posted photos on Facebook last night of her party weekend with about 15 other women. I’m guessing at least one bar was visited and possibly more. I’m also guessing that masks were not worn. I worry for my colleague and her friends.
I wouldn’t guess anything. In most states, groups that size are ‘allowed’. That’s why I don’t have facebook, and am not sure why anyone is posting anything like that - they are just asking to be judged… A coworker no less. If someone tests positive in that group, then the coworker will get blamed for bringing it into work - if they did or not. Posting this stuff on FB is just asking for trouble.
the longest I have worn my mask is during a 3 hour shift of doing cat adoptions, where there was no break. My neighbor does electronic installations (big Tv’s etc) and he wears the mask all day long while in homes and businesses. He says by the end of the day his ears really hurt.
So, now we are stuck with rising case numbers In large swaths if the country, coupled with lax compliance on things we know have a positive effect on controlling the virus. The numbers will only continue to get worse now. There is no hope of them getting better without drastic measures IOW, lock downs. But since it’s in the states where both wearing masks is shunned and shutting down equally shunned, it is going to be a catastrophe of epic proportions.
@suzyQ7 , all of us are working from home, so I’m not concerned about myself. But I don’t want my coworker or her friends to get sick or to pass the disease to anyone else (such as my coworker’s health-compromised mother, currently in remission from cancer; or another coworker, who is aunt to the bride-to-be and mother of one of the party attendees).
I understand that you don’t want anyone ill- but you don’t know the whole picture. Perhaps they are not seeing their imuno-compromised family for the next 2 weeks, or are getting tested. I’m sure your coworker cares about her family, so has thought this through. Anyway, my point is that at this point, people are making their own decisions, but by publicizing it they are both normalizing it and also setting themselves up for criticism. This is part of the reason we are so incredibly polarized now - everyone just puts everything out there for others to give opinions on. Then the opinions are challenged, then there are fights online, and so on. I’ve seen it up close - you don’t know how many people I know who have lost friends and family relationships on FB. This was a platform which was supposed to bring people together. Not.
