Very concerning and a very poor choice for a country that doesn’t have the virus nearly under control yet.
The governor of Washington State just announced that face coverings will be mandatory statewide, beginning Friday, in indoor public spaces and where social distancing is not possible.
Covid related - is this real??

Students can apply for grant money if parents were furloughed, etc.
FINALLY face coverings required in WA state. Let’s see if it can be enforced. Too many people going without near where I live.
If only all states would do this. We traveled from Seattle to the Midwest, by car, for a family emergency and it was like Covid didn’t exist.
Starting to see photos of today’s Trump gathering in a large church. It appears to be almost full, with very few wearing masks and packed into the seats with no social distancing whatsoever.
What could go wrong?
I wish this were national. Glad your state is doing this.
Maryland’s governor has allowed jurisdictions in Maryland to follow their own opening schedule as long as it’s not more lax than his. My part of Maryland went to phase 2 a week and a half ago with further openings last Friday.
Not all of Maryland is high density or urban. In our rural areas we are not seeing nearly the cases as they have in the DC/Baltimore area counties. One county, Garrett, has only had 10 total cases (7 of those in a nursing home),0 deaths and no new cases in at least 2 months.
I would hope that within the next several weeks, if we don’t see a great uptick in our positivity rate and hospitalizations, that the state could go to phase 3 and then those jurisdictions that aren’t quite ready can make their own decisions.
Our way of allowing jurisdictions to choose their path has worked very well so far. I see no reason to not continue with it.
What do you predict will be the outcome of this? I mean, I think you and I both predict there will be increases in cases because of this, but do you think that people will start realizing things like this are not a smart idea after all, or will we test less and people won’t know the spread is happening.
I have one relative who rejects all news sources except one pretty extreme (non-mainstream in any way) source. She is in Florida, doesn’t think masks help, and thinks things are ‘over’. She doesn’t realize there is a spike happening because her news source is that one source. She thinks all others are liars out to destroy the president. So, even the spike they have in her state isn’t making any change in her thinking or actions. I wonder if the results of this will impact how people think about doing things like this??
I have heard nothing about 14 billion dollars being approved for this.
That would be an insane amount of money for a program like this. I’m sorry, I’m calling BS.
Edit: ok, maybe not insane amount but substantial.
This was done in part to not single out the counties where the new cases are spiking hard. Outdoor public spaces are included, too (which is a really bad move). I guess we will be going on fewer walks this month, but glad that we have an almost fully equipped home gym and a nice backyard.
ETA: I will wait for the formal order to make the final conclusion. The media reports about “outdoor” spaces is all over the place.
I’m wondering if it is a scam. Thanks.
‘Fauci has no regrets about not telling Americans to wear masks sooner
Fauci said during the hearing that he does not regret the timing of when he told Americans to wear masks, explaining how the situation was different when concerns over shortages of personal protective equipment, or PPE, were more acute.
“I don’t regret that – because let me explain to you what happened. At that time, there was a paucity of equipment that our health care providers needed – who put themselves daily in harm’s way of taking care of people who are ill. We did not want to divert masks and PPE away from them, to be used by the people,” he said.
"Now that we have enough, we recommend … " Fauci began answering before he was cut off for the next question.’

I live in WA, and I religiously wear my very cool Husky-themed mask into every indoor space and on patios of restaurants until the food is there. You know, I keep my germs to myself while riskIng being attacked by a Cougar! But for the life of me I absolutely cannot understand what good this would do when people walk on trails or sit on the beach (which are also “public outdoor spaces”)… it will simply lead to resentment and rebellion.
@BunsenBurner You do not need to wear a face covering in WA outdoors if you can stay more than 6 feet away from other people.
I hope not, @MomofWildChild. I am looking at a few breaking news articles that make it sound not a peek outside without a mask.
Phew. Saw the official Twitter feed from the Governor. I knew he would not put out such nonsense- he is a reasonable guy. “Outdoors where you can’t maintain 6 ft. physical distancing.”

And now there’s this; not surprising but disappointing nonetheless. EXCLUSIVE: Feds About To Bail On Supporting COVID Testing Sites In Texas And Other States - TPM – Talking Points Memo
Because if we don’t test we won’t have any CV19. See how easily the problem is solved!
I’m sorry, if I’m walking on a trail I’m not wearing a mask. If someone has to pass by me at 3 feet for an instant I am not worried. I don’t go out of my way to get near people but if someone breezes by me at a little closer then I’m not going to get upset. If they think standing and having a conversation with me at a close distance is appropriate then we will have a different conversation.
I have been going to a farmers market near me, outdoors. There’s plenty of room yhere. I do try to distance myself appropriately but hey, sometimes people walk by closer. I think it’s ridiculous to wear a mask there except when interacting with vendors up close and personal. I understand others have different views.

Nothing. Did you not hear the church installed some virus killing gizmo that purifies the air and kills CV?
Answering an inquiry from several pages back: Longest I’ve worn a mask was 9 hours non stop except to replace it half way. Used for airtravel including gate and wait time. Home made with extra coffee filter between cotton layers. A tad awkward at first, but fine after awhile. I knew it would likely bother my ears, so used the fitted kind with straps I could adjust with a bead instead of tying.
I’m sure knowing this was a one day event made it easier. Plus it was all in conditioned spaces. If I need to visit a store for less than 30-60 minutes, I’ll typically use those with ear elastic, since they’re easier to take on and off.
