I don’t get why masks were not recommended earlier on by Fauci. The government could have saved the PPE equipment for health care people while still suggesting the average citizen use a cloth mask, for instance. I guess I’m missing something with his response.
People were buying up masks. I think that was a concern of the CDC, etc. But they also should have pushed mask use by people. they hadn’t thought of people making their own masks so recommended against them entirely it seems.
Since it was a month ago, has it kept the numbers down? Is everyone complying? Is their resistance? Just wondering if you’re local, or anyone else is, what you’re seeing.
In terms of people buying up masks, I guess we did see even on this site a couple of people when all this started that seemed to be buying up as many masks as they could get their hands on, well beyond what they could use themselves. But, without restrictions in place initially, people with money could and possibly did snap up lots of masks.
It is too bad though that people were not advised earlier about masks and social distancing. It didn’t seem that it needed to be an either/or thing with masks. Masks should have gone to essential workers first, but the rest of us could have helped the initial spread by figuring out how to make/ buy other types of masks as well.
Horrible numbers today for Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. For California at least, very possibly the big numbers of new cases are from the protests.
Horrible numbers of new cases in Santa Clara County (CA) as well. After we’d been having daily numbers in the 30s and 40s, our last few days have been 60, 89, 59, 121. Again, protests are a possibility for the cause. So far hospitalizations are still very low, but hospitalizations were low in Texas and Arizona until they weren’t.
I wish we’d have better contact tracing, and better public information about what the contact tracers find. Are these new cases coming from protestors or their families, or are they a result of Mothers Day parties, Memorial Day festivities, and graduation parties, or something else? It would be good to know. And unlike whether masks work, which is difficult, this is easy, given enough funding. You just do it.
My s’s are there, not me. And from what I hear, yes, there is pretty good compliance. And it does look like the 7 day rolling average of new cases (green graph) is declining. https://data.sfgov.org/stories/s/dak2-gvuj
Well, since I live in SF, I’ll bite. There is really no problem with mask compliance in SF. The requirement of staying 30 feet apart when walking outside with no mask is IMHO aspirational in a city, but I would say 75% of the people out walking have masks on, even when staying 30 feet apart. I try really hard to stay 30 feet away, so I can avoid wearing a mask. I hate wearing a mask!
California has seen a resurgence, but not San Francisco. Our numbers are consistently very low, and of course, I hope it remains that way.
Hair salons/barbershops/nail salons are not yet open and inside dining is still not allowed. But retail with a mask and social distancing is now allowed.
I visit San Francisco. People wear masks. Almost all people wear masks. However, the 30 foot rule - meh. Not so much. Walking down a neighborhood shopping street about 100% mask compliance. Walking from that shopping area to the house down neighboring residential streets I saw - no masks, people pulling up masks if we got in proximity and people (self included) just stepping off the sidewalk and passing each other with 6+ feet to spare. Dog park - no masks. Hiking trail, masks around body parts not related to nose or mouth.
“I’m starting to understand what PTSD looks like. It looks like this,” says a nurse in El Centro Medical Center, CA, in hard-hit Imperial County CA. She sounds exhausted. Her hospital is full, over-full, and they’re transferring covid patients as far away as Stanford and Berkeley (that’s 600 miles!).
My town requires masks, and you cannot enter stores, restaurants, PO without a mask on. No 30 foot rule though. We haven’t had a case in a month. There were originally 84 cases in our relatively small town, half of them in a nursing home and congregate housing.
I really didn’t believe or trusted by what the government was putting out about masks back in Feb/Mar and that’s why I “hoarded” a lot of masks very early on. I was wearing a mask way before it was fashionable. My cousins in Taiwan were telling me that they were allotted 3 masks a week, given out by their citizen ID. They were required to wear them. They were prohibited from sending them out of the country or resell them. I thought hmm, maybe they were onto something.
Speaking of of hoarding, I bought a lot of frozen fruits - berries and mangos. I am getting a lot of fresh fruit now and was wondering what I could do with all that frozen fruits…they are great with sparking wine.
I wonder if the infection effects of the protests will actually be addressed. If there was no spread from outside activities I’d like to know. Then I could easily, safely and with no qualms host a 30 member family get together on the half acre we have available. If the large protest gatherings did not result in infections I could go back to hiking with 20 people.
If there was infection, I’d like to know. What I don’t know is if CA is willing to delve into the data and let us know. Or if the ‘wrong’ answer is just not tenable and hence won’t be discussed.
I stay out of cities as much as possible. And luckily, it is almost 90% possible. Cities are not the suburbs, the suburbs are not rural. Unless we are able to track the infection data based on information that matters with details that matter it comes down numbers that are rather unuseful
Both of my s’s live in SF. I am perfectly happy if the city goes to what may seem extreme to keep their residents safe. Its pretty clear that in many other cities people don’t seem to be following the 6 foot/wear a mask policy, and the rates are rising dramatically. So if SF is being wise, even if a bit extreme and possibly even potentially padding the necessary distance, even if residents only wear masks if they are, say, 15-20’ apart, I am really OK with that. I recall the video of how far particles can spread from a sneeze, and IIRC it was something like 18’ or more, and if the COVID numbers are staying low in SF, their 30’ rule seems to be having a good result.
I see very high compliance from people of all ages and genders - even of drivers, so I didn’t take mine off after I left the store, as a kind of solidarity while I was driving as well (even though I can’t imagine that in a car with windows closed, or mostly closed, and no one near, that it would matter).
I do understand the cross-contamination question, but I have gloves, wipes, and sanitizer in the car if needed, plus the bag for the mask, so I could have solved that problem. I admit I was “virtue signalling” for that drive home if that’s what we call it.
Our MA numbers are improving a lot from what I can tell. I’m mostly happy with the governor’s approach of very small steps so far. We’ll see if I’m comfortable with what the school districts and/or department of education recommend.
That “Withfrank” site referenced above sounds like a scam, basically. Apparently, they fill out your FAFSA for you. It’s not a new aid program. I assume they you pay for the privilege.
Edit: it’s free, apparently. It is a FAFSA sign-up site, though, based on the idea that FAFSA is difficult for some families.
But no, it’s not an aid program.
Edit again: they also sell monthly memberships. I dunno, still sounds pretty scammy.
