I would enjoy such a thread. I have been talking to a friend who told me that obesity and something else together is really the lynchpin for high risk, based on studies she is reading, not simply having a BMI over 30. More like BMI of 35 and 75 years old or BMI of 30 and asthma. I want to search out some studies but it just feels like the knowledge is changing too quickly to keep up with it.
For those of us in states with good numbers at this time - the most important thing to do now is not let up on wearing masks and social distancing. Do not let your guard down, or our numbers will go back up.
My husband and I have been losing weight since March. We’ve always eaten in a healthy way, but he used to get a fair amount of pizza and other unhealthy things at lab seminars and the like. We took long walks nearly every day in March and April and still try to get decent walks in now as well as using the basement gym faithfully.
I check regularly with worldometers. Maryland ranks 11th in deaths per capita (they calculate per million).
The order is: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, DC, Louisiana, Michigan, Illinois, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Indiana, etc.
Louisiana, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are missing from your list too.
I absolutely like to your how great Maryland is doing. Yep, we’ve had a rough go and now we’re enjoying some relief.
Many states in the northeast were hit hard and are now fairing very well.
In my opinion almost all states will go through a similar process. Don’t worry, your states numbers will climb and then they will fall again. I think it’s now a process that’s pretty much going to happen.
I’m sorry if my posting positive numbers is a problem. I see so much gloom and doom on here that I like to try to give some hope and balance.
Yes, Maryland had high numbers and now we are doing great and so are many other states. Maybe more should share the positive numbers from their states.
I don’t think you’re ever going to get widespread compliance with wearing masks, unless you have a higher level of scientific evidence to support the recommendation.
I was shocked to see FL’s number today. That’s what NY looked like back in Mar/April. What’s sad is that it didn’t have to be.
I have been busier than ever, all of my projects got accelerated (data related). D1 in banking has been busier than before because most of her clients are trying to raise money. D2 is interning at a law firm that happens to be expanding its business now. We were just saying we are busier now than before the pandemic.
Wisconsin: I went to a grocery store for the first time in three weeks. At least half the customers and all the employees I saw were wearing masks (as was I). No wipes or whole wheat flour, but other items I look for whenever I go to the store were available.
@MarylandJOE I also want to say that I don’t have a problem with your positive numbers, and I know that some areas are doing much better than where I am. I’m glad for y’all. But I also am a believer that if you torture a number long enough it will confess to anything, and I am suspect of politicians putting lipstick on this pig. Yes, we’ve flattened the curve … I don’t think they get that flattening the curve at its highest point is not optimal! lol
@milgymfam this morning I was thinking how helpful it would be to have some kind of algorithm where you could plug in your factors – age, BMI, number of autoimmune disorders and other health issues – and get a risk score. There’s a site that does that for law school admissions! lol
I have no idea of this. My son just called his job has been eliminated. One of the many things he needs to do is transfer his 401k and his Roth IRA, maybe brokerages are being helped by unemployment and transferring accounts?
Son will be ok, he and his wife are very frugal. They budgeted on one income. He was blindsided about this. He’s the only one who does and knows the job he does. Good luck to the company about that. But his industry has been decimated by the pandemic. He’s an engineer with lots of experience so hoping for a reasonably quick turnaround.
I just ordered whole wheat flour from Bob’s Red Mill. So you might want to give that a try. Ordered it last week and it shipped today.,Ordered yeast, too. I’m going to try my hand at baking bread - just for something new to do.,
I think that you are the only person I have ever heard give “lack of scientific evidence” as a reason for not wearing a mask. What I have heard frequently, instead, is that it infringes on their personal rights. Also, most of these maskless folks do not have a lot of faith in science in general.
In my post here this morning, I posted about a physician that says there are studies that debunk the efficacy of wearing a mask. And that wearing a mask can be more harmful than not.
So there must be outlets that are reporting that there is a “lack of scientific evidence”. I’m not hearing that on the news I’m reading or watching. But I do wonder where it is being said because I am hearing this in my area.
