Kind of like, “You lost me at hello.”
Has anyone noticed that this thread is tagged with “Florida International University”? Hopefully that school doesn’t have Florida’s all new cases. The COVID college thread also had this issue. Is this an IT problem?
On some thread somewhere, one of the mods said CC knows there is a problem with the tags, and they are working on it.
Sigh…I wonder how long it will take for our hospitals to be overrun again with CV-19 patients? days, weeks?
I don’t see our leadership capable of slowly down this out of control train. Too many competing interests.
I have come to the realization that the vast majority of us will get this virus at some point over the next 6 months. It’s going to be devastating…and nothing like we have seen in over a century.
“… When your food or drink is ready, the chef or bartender who prepared your item will bring it directly to you so that only one person handles your items…”
I don’t know what kind of restaurant this is, but it would be highly unusual that only one person in the kitchen is handling all the food items on your plate.
Also highly unusual that anyone “on the line” (person preparing your food) could leave the line to run a plate to the dining room, not to mention being presentable enough (not a giant ball of sweat) to be in the FOH.
It sure sounds nice though!
Cynically yours, Midwest67
I am in a town dependent on summer tourism, in MA. There are large signs downtown saying “Wear a Mask.” It’s town policy, but not enforced. Now that it’s summer, I notice both day visitors and, presumably, those staying longer, NOT wearing masks. Residents have been so compliant. I am now taking walks at 7am or 8pm to avoid people.
I have come to the same realization.
I also don’t see the press or most people realizing just how bad the economic fallout will be. So much is interconnected! Just on the college front: if the pandemic rages out of control schools will be devastated financially (whether they open in person or not). Most of the merit scholarships so many have come to depend on for their college strategy will be gone. Much of financial aid will be gone. Many many more will need financial aid. Etc etc etc.
There definitely will be winners, companies and families that survive and thrive. But so many are going under/suffering.
As I say on my posts – I always hope I’m wrong! But where we are now to me means this pandemic cannot be controlled. If it cannot be controlled, people are not going to be eating out, or going to schools in person or going to the movies etc etc. And then all the knock on effects happen.
This is a worldwide crisis the likes of which have not been seen in at least 100 years.
Sorry for the early morning downer.
ETA: if a therapeutic can be discovered quickly so that COVID19 becomes a mild illness for everybody that changes everything. So that’s where my hope lies.
After watching BBC’s news story about the virus in Yemen on TV I have nothing to complain about. Absolutely nothing. Also planning a donation today to MSF (Doctors Without Borders).
(this appears to be their website link - if so - a warning that it’s sad to see, esp since it’s 2020 and I’d like to think we could take care of everyone in the planet at least for the basics by now):
You know it’s bad when businesses are begging for guidance and regulations.

It’s almost like Gov. Abbott paid absolutely no attention to anything public health officials have been saying for months about how the virus spreads and how quickly it spreads.
“Facing a surge of new coronavirus cases, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expressed regret for allowing bars to reopen so early, saying Friday that he did not realize how fast the virus would spread.”
“If I could go back and redo anything, it probably would have been to slow down the opening of bars, now seeing the aftermath of how quickly the coronavirus spreads in the bar setting,” Abbott said in an evening interview with KVIA in El Paso.”

CNN. Sigh.
VP Pence is actually right. 500000 tests a day. Clinical trials well under way. Ppe improvements. Ongoing scientific work on the virus itself. Mistakes in nursing home protections recognized. Schools carefully evaluating plans. Areas that were under siege are not anymore. Localized decision making without federal interference based on the realities on the ground in a huge and geographically diverse nation.
If progress is only defined as eradication or magical viral wands. Yes, no progress has been made.
It’s a virus that’s been really known to us for six months.
Please stop with the politcal agenda. It’s not that interesting. The science is worth discussing for sure. Important regional decisions. Absolutely.
We get it. The thread hates the administration. 130 days and we get a new one.
I wonder if the virus is still with us in January and the same issues with a decimated economy are here next year this thread will be consistent with the messaging and blame. I doubt it and it would t be fair then either.
If there’s a thread open at the time. I hope the quote function still works.
The largest problem with so many in leadership is they aren’t being good examples of what would be helpful for helping get rid of the virus. By setting bad examples, they’re encouraging others to follow. With oodles of followers, what could have been a better situation isn’t.
Medical advances are great. Medical advances with a pulled together country would be infinitely better than what we have.
Pandemics will come and go in waves for years. They will re-emerge in countries and cities all over the globe periodically and unpredictably, and the vulnerable will suffer most. Most doctors I know acknowledged this in February. While we can and should take rigorous steps to attempt to mitigate the outbreak, we will also learn to live with this.
The economic damage has already been done, so I expect a sustained depression. The economic survival of colleges will be a small blip with tens of millions unemployed, as has already happened.
With friends like this…
‘Co-founder of ReOpen Maryland says he has tested positive for coronavirus’
“A Maryland man who organized rallies to pressure Gov. Larry Hogan (R) to lift the state’s stay-home order says he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus and does not plan to provide names of people with whom he had contact to public health officials for contact tracing.
Tim Walters, a co-founder of ReOpen Maryland, said on social media this week that he has had a dry cough for months but it recently worsened. He then began to experience an excruciating headache, a fever and the inability to focus with one of his eyes, which led to vertigo.
Walters, 53, a diabetic who has had mini-strokes, said he went to a hospital emergency room Monday and was diagnosed with the virus.
“Here I am months after not wearing a mask at rallies, churches and so on, and so it’s funny how capricious this thing is,” he said in a Facebook video.”
@privatebanker you are right that some progress has been made. But Pence also said we have flattened the curve, which was true a month ago but certainly not true now. Agree that areas that were under siege early on are no longer under siege. But new areas are surging because they opened too soon and/or didn’t put enough protocols in place. It’s not a political thing really because if you look at 2 of the states that have a done a really good job, managing through, NY & MA one is led by a Democrat and one a Republican. Same is true for states having issues right now if you look at CA & TX.
But I also think on a national level (and I’m willing to give them credit for vaccine progress and ventilator production, and rock star Fauci’s messaging), that the current administration is not doing enough to model good behavior and address current surges head on.
Leadership is distributed among us all. Not one. We are not a monarchy. We are free. We are also adults.
Most people are being incredibly disciplined.
Trump doesn’t wear a mask in public. Ok. Stupid.
Next. And does it really impact anyone. Really.
It’s a diversion and a bit of scapegoating. It’s not really relevant. It just takes up so much oxygen. Because it’s politically expedient.
If he puts in a mask 24 7 the virus will disappear, the country will come together as one and we will stop bashing the president. I just don’t think that’s intellectually honest by us.
I am only speaking to this thread now focused on the virus and what is happening and how it’s impacting lives and the economy.
Bash away elsewhere. I really don’t care who’s in charge.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Another record.

@privatebanker I’m sure you logged on this morning expecting to read how everyone thought Pence did a great job with his report yesterday and reassured the country. Nope- not on this site! Wear the masks, don’t go to crowded bars, don’t be fat.
While the protests have not yet been shown to have resulted in a spike in cases, what did happen is that the protests and riots marked the end of many people accepting that social distancing and mask wearing was important. That is very, very unfortunate. But- if thousands of people could go to a funeral of someone they didn’t know, it simply set a new benchmark- and not a good one.
As far as the economy- despite what you read here, it isn’t all bad. The company that employees me added 5000 jobs from March to May and the stock is at a record high. Oh- and set up several funds both to help with virus-related needs and to support diversity efforts. Big, bad corporate America. Businesses, if possible, have to be agile and meet the needs to the customers. For many, it can be done.
Leadership includes, but isn’t limited to, politicians or any particular political party. By definition, it’s those people follow. They set the tone. They encourage their followers to be like them.
@wisteria100 my only point is the consensus is that we must have 100 percent perfection before any progress can be mentioned?
That’s not the world I want to live in. It can’t be endless downward spiral. It’s not good for the soul. A little balance is appropriate.
The guy said great progress has been made. I think that is true. Has a cure or perfection been achieved no. There is hard work and hard times ahead.
I didn’t see him claiming victory over the virus. But that’s the intent being postured.
We did flatten the curve. Now we have to do it again. And we probably will with pres whoever. Unless they have magical powers is all.
