Coronavirus thread for June

Yes, @emilybee, we will have additional cases, every day, for years, or until there is an effective vaccine or we achieve herd immunity. We know that. We can access the latest statistics on a variety of accurate websites, so you do not need to provide hourly updates here.

Those stats are one of the main reasons I keep reading along.

Statistics and new research and intelligent evaluations …
in one place.

ps Encourage leaders you know to send a donation into Doctors Without Borders. That group does so much good in this world in places many people wouldn’t want to set foot. Those who volunteer for it have my utmost respect. The best I can do is help fund them.

pps If you don’t want to fund them for whatever reason, feel free to donate somewhere to help someone today if finances allow. People need to help people to make progress against the wrongs of the world.

Plenty of people were behaving like the pandemic was over well before the protests started. Look at all the questionable activity and lack of social distancing, lack of mask wearing, etc. over Memorial Day weekend. To lay blame due to protests and riots seems like a bit of revisionist history to me. Many states were too quick to reopen long beforehand. Even the TX governor admitted yesterday he was wrong to allow bars to reopen as he did.

Is it really that difficult for you to skip over posts you don’t want to read? You can also use the ignore feature. Don’t ruin it for everyone else due to your preferences.

I like that I can get headlines on here without having to spend a ton of time looking for them myself. I can choose to read or not read what I want.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: OK, time to rein it in a little, thanks.

I didn’t realize so many used this thread as a source of reliable data; feel free to post away, as I withdraw my objection then.

@privatebanker My point on the Pence curve is that to stand up there and say we flattened the curve is disingenuous. It was flattened weeks ago but currently it is rising. He did not make that distinction and is getting deserved blowback on that.
You’re right- Trump is not infecting anyone by not wearing a mask, but by wearing one or encouraging wearing masks he can prevent others from infecting others. Wearing masks at his rallies would undoubtedly prevent infections. Advising citizens to wear masks could change minds among those who feel they are not vulnerable. How about a public service announcement with influencers wearing mask and practicing hand hygiene. That could get some of the younger folks who are currently not complying to comply.

I have many sources for reliable data. I typically (although not always) include the source of information I post here. I discount, as appropriate, posts that are opinions. It is relatively easy to tell the difference between facts and opinions, even on this site.

“ To lay blame due to protests and riots seems like a bit of revisionist history to me. “

To continuously deny the protests had anything to do with any outbreaks is just as naive. Either the virus is dangerous in large get togethers or it isn’t. I don’t really think the virus determines your “cause” or your “reason” for your get together before deciding to spread. Maybe we would all be in more agreement if we stopped trying to justify some large groups while then demonizing other large groups.

It appears thus far that the location (inside or outside) and the rate of mask wearing among participants in large gatherings have some effect on the likelihood of contracting COVID-19 at the large gathering. Higher spread activities seem to include the following: being at bars with friends or strangers; social gatherings with family and friends, if held inside; indoor religious services, especially if singing is involved. Lower spread activities seem to include the following: protests (no matter the reason: pro BLM, anti safer-at-home orders) at which many people wear masks. I hope additional information and data on higher and lower risk activities become available soon.

Just found out that one of my nephews, a Texas resident in his 40s, has tested positive for COVID-19. He contracted it from his business partner. His wife’s parents live with them, so there is some concern about them getting the virus, especially because the father-in-law is overweight and has diabetes.

Even as devastating as the 1918 flu was, the “vast majority” did not get it. I think the statistic I read was about 26-28% contracted it.

But they probably didn’t realize there were asymptomatic cases back then. There’s hope, eventually, for that part.

@rosered55 you may be right but maybe not. The protests coincided with the lifting of many restrictions. In many areas contact tracers were not allowed to ask if you attended a protest. So maybe someone said they were at a bar but did not also volunteer information that they also were involved in the protests. Or they had a social gathering with family and friends before attending a protest.
Are you thinking that these activities are mutually exclusive? How can one prove that someone got the virus at the bar or family gathering while totally discounting the protests with little to no way to contact trace.

Call me Pollyanna then. I don’t believe that the vast majority of 330 million people are going to get it, not with the way they are fast tracking numerous vaccines. At least a few of them are bound to be at least somewhat successful, even if one has to get a yearly or every other year booster.

I agree that the contact tracing in the United States is inadequate, although it seems better in some places than others. And as said above, people might go to protests and to bars; they might go to indoor political rallies and to bars; they might even go to church and to bars. They might tell the truth to contact tracers or they might lie. They might never be called by contact tracers.

Upholding and preserving the right to privacy and the rights to freely associate and express political views are presenting difficult challenges these days.

No, it seems that large outdoor gatherings where most people wore masks is very different to crowds indoors with no mask wearing, in terms of spreading the virus.

Neither the Texas or Florida Governors said the protests were the cause of the increase in cases, or even had an effect. They both specifically said overcrowded bars/restaurants have been the cause and earlier, iirc, Texas officials included private parties with no mask wearing and no social distancing was another cause. There was no mention at all of the protests.

Well that’s very scientific.
Because the governors didn’t mention protests ?

FWIW a friend’s son was diagnosed with Covid 19 as part of a pre surgery screen. Asymptomatic at testing and never developed symptoms. No state or county interest in contact tracing and the other members off family received pushback when they wanted to be tested because they didn’t have symptoms. They were tested and are negative but contact tracing is a state responsibility not federal. Governors may be preaching testing and tracing but it seems more like lip service. Not to mention who will pay for all the tracers? States are already howling about budget deficits.

No way any Governor can speak ill of the protests.
