Coronavirus thread for June

MODERATOR NOTE:
I specifically asked users not to call out others. I just edited/deleted several posts. I will have to close the thread next time.

From my earlier post: Any posts that specifically call out another user will be deleted, unless the post is designed to add information or context.

Meant to post this here, instead of another thread:

Vice President Pence spoke at a church service today at megachurch First Dallas Baptist. Reportedly, over half of the congregation wore masks. (Good job, Dallas churchgoers). The Vice President wore a mask, although he took it off when speaking. (Good job, Vice President.) Reportedly they limited attendance to promote social distance. (Good job, pastor of First Dallas Baptist.) But… there was a hundred voice choir. That sang. Without masks. And I believe the congregation sang along.

Nooooooooo. Do not sing! Do not sing together. Singing together, usually so joyful, is now so dangerous.

What does “call out another user” mean?

At the very least two things make it VERY different…the equipment and the meds. Very specialized to critically ill patients, Covid or not.

Florida governor attributes Covid-19 surge to socializing and a backlog in testing
From CNN’s Melissa Alonso

South Florida, especially the Miami–area, has reported the most new cases in the state and it’s mostly due to socializing, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a news briefing Sunday.

The uptick in positive cases has been driven “by a big increase” over the last three weeks in younger age groups, particularly those in the 18-to-44 age range, DeSantis said. Graduation parties and gatherings where people aren’t adhering to social distancing are responsible for several Covid-19 cases, DeSantis said.

A backlog of testing has also accounted for the current spike, DeSantis said.

Florida was in the 10% positivity range when testing ramped up in March and April, DeSantis said.

In April, that rate dropped and was stable in May and June, at around 3%. Positivity rate is about 12% now, DeSantis says.

Florida’s Broward County to close beaches over July 4 weekend
From CNN’s Melissa Alonso

Cities in Broward County will follow Miami Dade County’s example and close its beaches ahead of July 4 weekend, the city of Fort Lauderdale said in a tweet.

Beaches in Broward County will closed from July 3 through July 5, according to the tweet.

Several mayors from Broward’s coastal cities will hold a news conference today at 4:30 p.m ET to discuss the measure, according to the tweet.

South Florida mayors grapple with residents not following Covid-19 rules
From CNN’s Melissa Alonso

Miami Beach’s mayor has called for a special commission meeting on Monday to discuss mask usage compliance as Covid-19 cases continue to surge in Florida, according to a tweet from Mayor Dan Gelber.

“We were 1 of the first in the U.S. to require masks indoors & in many places outdoors. But it is clear that there has not been terrific compliance with this rule and other measures,” Gelber said in a tweet.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez has ordered all of the beaches in Miami-Dade County to close for the July 4 weekend but residents in South Florida continue to congregate despite pleas from officials to social distance.

In Pinecrest, an affluent Miami-Dade suburb, the “largest problem is private house parties,” Mayor Joseph Corradino said in a letter to the community this week.

House parties have become prevalent in recent weeks and “are the most dangerous things that impact our community,” Corradino said.

“The law does not enable us to enforce the rules we use on public spaces on private property. So, our current option is to appeal to the common sense and decency of our citizens. This danger comes directly from within,” the letter said.

Miami Beach code enforcement continues to enforce social distancing mandates from Miami-Dade County, Miami Beach spokesperson Melissa Berthier told CNN.

But, whether Miami Beach’s commission will discuss mandating face masks and imposing fines for violators like neighboring city of Miami, “it’s one theory,” Berthier said.

Louisiana reports 1,467 new Covid-19 cases
From CNN’s Melissa Alonso

Louisiana state officials reported 1,467 new Covid-19 cases over the weekend, according to Louisiana Department of Health.

“Of new positive cases reported today, 43% are people 29 and younger; a third are people 18-29,” said Christina Stephens, spokesperson for Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, in a tweet.

It’s not just about which disease it is, it’s the acuity. ICU patients require technology that non ICU nurses don’t work with-and it’s not just about the buttons, it’s what the technology is telling you about the patient. They are often on multiple drips that have to be titrated (adjusted) constantly. Nurses on the floor don’t work with those drugs or don’t work with them in the same manner. Non ICU nurses don’t work with vents-this is complicated stuff, you don’t just pick this up in one afternoon. I could go on and on.

As an ICU nurse, going to a floor with multiple patients would have been a huge undertaking. Balancing that many patients is something that floor nurses get very good at. An ICU nurse would have a very hard time adjusting to this manner of nursing. Time management would be a huge problem for an ICU nurse tasked with taking care of 7 or more patients.

As I said, nursing is very specialized, just as medicine is. You wouldn’t want a plastic surgeon performing your open heart valve replacement. If you are in ICU you want an experienced ICU nurse. If you are on an ortho floor, you definitely don’t want the ICU nurse. She wouldn’t know what the hell she was doing. There can be some crossover in nursing of course, but in the highly specialized areas, you want the best in that specialty.

Citing the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered bars closed in seven counties including Los Angeles County.

The other counties: Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, San Joaquin and Tulare.

Vice President Mike Pence encourages young people to get tested and people to wear masks
From CNN’s Nicky Robertson and Kevin Bohn

Vice President Mike Pence has encouraged young Americans to get a coronavirus test if they have concerns.

During his briefing with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Pence discussed how they can “accelerate results of testing.” He said he would take the feedback to the White House Coronavirus Task Force and the administration’s private partners.

President Trump has repeatedly downplayed the need for increased testing. At his Tulsa, Oklahoma, rally last week he suggested that he had asked for testing to be slowed down.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, told reporters that Texas health officials are seeing an increase in hospitalization rates among 20- to 40-year-olds, which she said indicated there is a large percentage in this age group who are positive but were asymptomatic.

Pence also encouraged Americans to wear masks, but again deferred to local ordinances for mask requirements.

“If your local officials in consultation with the state are directing you to wear a mask, we encourage everyone to wear a mask in the affected areas and where you can’t maintain social distancing, wearing a mask is just a good idea and it will, we know, from experience, will slow the spread of the coronavirus,” Pence said at a briefing at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas on Sunday.
Later in the briefing, Birx said, “I’m really appealing to every Texan to wear a mask.” Pence and Birx both stressed that younger Americans need to take steps to protect older Americans.

This is a moment where you really have – we have to put our arms around and protect the most vulnerable among us and particularly seniors with underlying health conditions are precisely those for whom the worst outcomes occur,” Pence said.
Pence wore a mask earlier Sunday while visiting a church but has not always worn masks in public events.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-28/gavin-newsom-orders-bars-closed-in-7-california-counties-due-to-coronavirus-spread

The article says that the state has closed bars in Los Angeles County and six other counties including the very hard hit Imperial County.

My reaction was, what? Bars were open in Southern California? No wonder they’ve been having all that transmission. The article also says that eight other counties, including Santa Clara County, were asked (rather than ordered) to close bars. That should be easy for Santa Clara County, as our bars haven’t been open since mid-March. We don’t even have restaurants open inside, let alone bars.

People inside in bars drinking seems like a bad idea at this point. Pretty much anywhere. And likely worse with young people. Typically total opposite of social distancing.

I found out yesterday (and posted above) that my oldest nephew has tested positive for COVID-19. He lives in Texas. I found out a little while ago that his sister, who lives in a southeastern state and is a new mom, has tested positive. Both were tested after coworkers tested positive. Try to stay safe, everyone!

My daughter just got back from backpacking, and on the way home she stopped at a small local hot dog restaurant in the Colorado foothills. There was a big sign outside: “We do not wear masks. If you have a problem with that, go somewhere else.” Ironically, she said about half the patrons wore masks. She and her friend opted not to eat there, even though stopping there for a hot dog has been a bit of a 20-year family tradition.

I would be so sad if this thread were closed down!!

I suspect perhaps some people might not realize if they were problematic. I don’t know if the mods have the bandwidth to give a warning/let people know they crossed the line (and they may be doing that for all I know). Just a thought.

Here are the few details I know about where or from whom my relatives contracted COVID-19. One of them works in a small business and was tested after business partner tested positive. Other works in a VA hospital and was tested after a coworker tested positive.

There is a family in Southern California with the father who died from the virus and 28 family members with positive tests. They are not sure where they got it but they say it wasn’t parties.

Sorry to hear about your niece and nephew @rosered55

Hope they have a quick and complete recovery,

So sorry @rosered55.

@rosered55, did the VA hospital where your relative worked have covid patients in it? Did your relative who was (probably) infected by a business partner practice social distancing/wear masks when with this person?

I don’t want to demonize anyone, but I sure would like to have a better understanding of what kinds of activities cause transmission. (Besides singing; don’t sing with other people and don’t be around people who are singing. And besides going to bars.)

I’m sure that the protests caused some transmission; how could they not? But it’s interesting that we haven’t heard reports of superspreading events at protests, in cases where the protestors were outside protesting and didn’t do anything else like getting arrested. Maybe such reports will be forthcoming. Sometimes it takes a while for this information to be discovered and publicized.
