Coronavirus thread for June

For those of you bemoaning a lack of wipes, you just have to keep at it on Amazon. Every few days I see that they have them. Put in “disinfecting wipes” instead of a particular brand, and eventually they become available. I just saw some on Amazon. Of course, by the time my post is posted and someone reading this goes to the website, it well may be gone, but just try every day, a couple of times a day if necessary.

Doing this, I have a good supply now and don’t need to look for them for a long time.

@emilybee, can you provide a link for the 15 testing sites in NYC especially for protesters? I’d like to give the info to some family members. Thanks!

I found wipes at Walmart this week. First time since early March.

I did an entire spreadsheet to figure this out. About two thirds of the new cases are in Maricopa County (Phoenix) or Pima County (Tucson). As a percentage of the population, the three counties that contain the Navajo Nation, Apache, Coconino and Navajo, are most affected, but in terms of raw numbers the increase is happening in the counties with big cities in them.

Well I’m hoping there isn’t a relapse but I don’t see how there won’t be. Just too many people out day after day, so I’m expecting it to go up everywhere, including NY and especially NYC.

I don’t have one - just the info that was in my paper and I’m 150 miles north of the city. None of the articles I looked in city papers gave specifics on where the sites are, either.

Maybe look on a NYC.gov site.

Thanks, @emilybee! I will do so.

Just thought I"d chime in here about masks in our Chicago suburb and surrounding suburbs. People don’t wear them if they can distance - so if they are walking or running or playing tennis. Don’t wear them if they are sitting on blankets with their friends or golfing. They definitely wear them in all stores I’ve been in. It would be downright odd to be in a store without a mask. This includes picking up something from a restaurant if you have to go in to pay. I’ve done this a number of times and everyone I’ve seen (both customer and workers) have masks on.

We had our third protest here yesterday with about 200 people. Every single one had a mask on for the whole two hours we were together - while we marched through town and while we listened to speakers for an hour afterwards.

I’m also seeing hand sanitizer in stores again.

You would get a full refund if there is any unauthorized charges on your card. You should not use your debt card for charges. I use my credit cards online and over the phone. I’ve had few fraudulent charges over the years and never had any problem in getting a full refund.

I drove from NY to Missouri a couple of days ago. Masks were in pretty universal use in all the states we went through but were used almost not at all in Missouri. Traffic seemed light, again till we hit St. Louis.

Encouraging messages were flashed in most states, but not in Illinois and Missouri. I really think there are wildly different experiences of the pandemic, which (obviously) informs people’s beliefs and behavior.

New Yorkers can get tested at any urgent cares, like CityMd. Some Walgreens are also doing testing.

Yesterday I took my mom to a major Chinese grocery store in NJ. It was cleaner and less crowded than grocery stores like Shoprite. All vegetables and fruits were individually wrapped in plastic. They wiped down the conveyor belt after every customer. Every customer wore a mask (correctly too). My mom said she is going to shop there in the future instead of going to Shoprite in the future.

One local Home Depot (Bellevue, WA) had Zep brand alcohol spray (66%) in typical spray bottles (like window cleaner sized) Pretty much every store here has hand sanitizer for sale.

I received two 8oz bottles of generic hand sanitizer on my Peapod order the other day. That’s the first time any has even showed as in stock since mid-March.

We only made one stop on our way home today - in VA at a small gas station on a state highway. There were only four pumps, but all four were full. Only one person wasn’t using a mask. Some leaving the store had masks on too. I was impressed.

As far as traffic was concerned, it would be in our parameters for normal had Covid not been an issue, but there were no backups northbound and just a couple of areas where we were a little under the speed limit. Southbound had a backup in a typical area.

Off the highway back in PA we saw a fair number of outdoor events, parties, and relatively full outdoor dining in restaurants that had them. No personal desire to participate in any of those. Those who do can see what happens with the virus. Soon I’ll be checking numbers from zipcodes around here to see if there have been changes.

I have never worn a mask or seen one worn at a gas pump.

I don’t wear a mask when pumping gas either. The gas pumps are way far apart! I do wipe the pump thing off…our station provides wipes to do so.

Almost all women and most men wear masks in stores in the St. Louis area. Or did, before the protests. Not sure what to expect now.

I am cooking burgers on the grill tonight and realized we had no cheese. In our house, that is just unforgivable, so I went to Whole Foods to get some and some pickles. Most (not all) were wearing masks. I almost never see anyone wearing gloves (except the cashier who rang me up was wearing them). I don’t wear them either, just use sanitizer when I get back into the car and wipe my door handles and anything else I’ve touched before using sanitizer. I usually wipe down my groceries. For some reason I forgot to do that this time, probably because I had so few items.

I often agree with many of your points as well, @milee30! But you are off here a bit. The trait characteristic of agreeableness includes altruism, empathy and generally pro-social behavior. Here is a pop definition and you will see that what you describe regarding your wearing a mask is textbook agreeableness: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/agreeableness

(You can look up the academic literature on the generally accepted “big five” trait characteristics, of which agreeableness is just one, but that pop blurb is good enough in my opinion.)
