Coronavirus thread for June

Bath and Body works has hand sanitizer too. So if you want an annoyingly small bottle of “champagne toast” scented hand sanitizer - go for it!

Seriously, I am grateful to them. They have had it in stock on and off even during the worst times. I take those tiny bottles and refill larger ones, plus the tiny bottle is good for your pocket while shopping.

I love BBW or as my sister calls it, “the stinky store”

Whole Foods had scent free sanitizer today 8 oz bottles.

I had a credit card that I only used at three places, all of which are retailers that should be trustworthy and have at least decent security. But it still got fraudulent charges on it. Seems like the only way would be crack or inside job at one of those three, or the issuing bank, or Visa/MC.

Basically, any credit card, or debit card with Visa/MC capability, should be expected to get fraudulent charges every year or few. Because debit card fraud causes your money (instead of the bank’s money) to be missing, it is best not to have Visa/MC on debit cards (banks will issue ATM-only or ATM/PIN-only debit cards, but you typically have to ask).

I’ve had to get 3 new credit cards in less than 18 months, all due to fraudulent activity.

Glad to hear supplies are returning. I got a “reminder” email from Staples saying it was time to re-purchase the toilet paper I bought. LOL ! What I order ere day (the only quantity I could get from them at the time) will last me years!

2 of our credit cards were compromised this year- both were cards we hardly use. One was a card where DH and I have different numbers on the same account (our Costco Visas). His was compromised, mine was not. I got a call asking if he’d just purchased gasoline in one of the western states. Um, NO. The other was his discover card. Someone tested it on apple pay and google pay and bought an app for their phone. We shut the card down immediately.

And only on CC will someone disagree about being agreeable, LOL.

The weather is gorgeous today. Almost makes one forget we are in the middle of a pandemic.

My area moved to the next phase on Friday, so many stores in my town opened for business. Based on comments left on Facebook, it was like the floodgates opened. People couldn’t wait to get out and shop. The one restaurant, which is only doing outdoor seating, was booked solid as soon as they opened up for reservations last Tuesday.

My friend owns a bookstore in town, and she hasn’t opened yet. Just received an email from her. She said based on her observations, people think wearing masks and social distancing is optional, so she’s in no hurry to open.

Call me crazy…I am going to stock up this summer before the next wave - masks, sanitizers, wipes, TPs.

Observations from today’s outings:

Went to mass this morning with D20. It was our 2nd time in 3 weeks going, and it feels good to be back. Lots of changes. Everyone must sign up ahead of time on an Event Brite, and seating is limited. If they get to the stated capacity, no one else can enter. Every other pew is taped off, and parishioners are seated in their family groups in staggered sets. Imagine a checkerboard with people instead of checkers, and in a semi-circle. Masks are required throughout mass. The priest reminds everyone to keep the mask over their nose and mouth. There is a protocol for communion that he explained prior to mass starting, and all procedures are also outlined in the Event Brite description, on FaceBook, on their website, and in the email we received. We are encouraged to bring hand sanitizer to use before and after communion. Singing is discouraged, but our music ministers are amazing and a joy to listen to. Some of the parts of mass that we used to sing are now spoken. One of the weekend masses has been eliminated to allow extra time to clean surfaces between masses. All in all, we feel very safe there and have no hesitation about going back.

Then this afternoon, I took my 12yo to his weekly golf league. No masks, no sani, but seriously, it’s super easy to social distance. The flag stays in the hole and no one is allowed to touch it. I can’t think of anything either of us did touch other than the items we brought with us. We walked the course, but I saw the workers spraying down the golf carts that others were using after the 9th hole. Again, no concerns at all. Rather surreal, actually. It felt like a normal day on the course.

Big protest march held in our area yesterday. Will be curious to see what happens virus-wise from it. From the pictures and video a friend posted, there were a lot of people, all doing really well with social distancing, at least until the end when a few speakers were giving speeches. At that point the crowd was a bit closer together. Most participants wore masks. Some reports say 1000 people, other say 6K. I need to check again. It was very peaceful and calm from what my friend posted. It was organized by 3 teenagers.

I’m getting to the point with masks that I am with seat belts. I don’t feel comfortable if I am not wearing one. (Around people regarding the masks).

Very interesting article

You can get a refund but often the bank wants to cancel and reissue the card. Then you have to change every single vendor that has an automatic payment or that has that card on file for when you pay online. Recently I disputed a charge and Paypal just kept saying the item was received (4 days before I ordered it) so I disputed it with my credit card. They wanted to cancel and reissue. I have a couple of autopays on that card (Netflix is one). Because it was paypal they okayed just disputing the charge, and then paypal allowed the dispute anyway.

I’ve already started. Plus I’m stockpiling canned goods and frozen meat.

With experiences shared here about CC, it is clear that it doesn’t matter what you do or don’t do, it’s all about luck.

I am very carefree about my CC, i have done things that most of you would frown upon - I send picture of my CC to friends, kids, cleaning lady, friend in Italy (b/c she wanted to buy something on US amazon it it won’t take her CC), to use as they see fit. I left CC numbers/expiry date and code to local bagel store so they can charge whenever i order for pick up or delivery. I have never had unauthorized charges, never, ever, by people i know nor people I don’t.

My husband isn’t like that but he knows what i do and he isn’t concerned. He said the CC company will always reverse the unauthorized charges, I lost my CC a few times and I hated it when had to get a new one. Sometimes days go by and i hope would turn up, still no unauthorized charges. All the automatic thingy stops working when you change new CC, which is annoying.

I never use debit card, i don’t even carry it with me most of the time. I don’t even remember the PIN number. When we go on trips I have to be reminded to bring my debit card and the PIN.

I’m stocking up too.

My town does not allow you to pump your own gas, so problem solved for me.

We ate (outside) today at a restaurant for the first time since March. I admit I’m a little freaked out, and wondering if we should have.
But it felt so good to be out doing normal things. It wasn’t “planned” that we would eat out, but we were on a bike ride, and we passed by a place that looked like they had things relatively under control, so we decided to go for it.
