Closing down this thread would mean a quick death of CC. Admin Jon is responsible for clicks on this site. Without this thread, I’m pretty sure many parents won’t be here as much. There are no real students to help, because we the parents dont know what will happen in the future so it is hard to offer advice.
I dont care that people are bickering or have different POV. Block them if you disagree, same as change the channel.
Observation: Talked to a family member today who lives and works in two communities in the heart of midcoast Maine that is extremely popular with summer tourists. Driving down the coast from work to home around 3PM, the majority of cars passed had out of state plates, many loaded down with kayaks, bikes, and other vacation gear, so good for the economy I guess.
He stopped at the local hardware store on the way home and was the only one out of all customers and employees wearing a mask.
Currently, Covid cases are fairly light. Let’s hope they stay that way with increased visitors in the area.
On the good news front, rent prices in NYC and SF have dropped a bit due to COVID relocations. Since I will be in the market for apartments in both next year, that is a good sign. Still very expensive, but going in the right direction
I have a serious Covid 19 related question so please don’t shut down the thread yet (please don’t shut it down at all, actually). I work at a place that got something like the thing in the link to disinfect Covid from the air and surfaces. I don’t see how this could possibly work but maybe someone more science minded or with a chemistry background could tell me if I’m wrong.
From their site, ‘GenEon uses this technology to allow users to produce an electrically charged mixture of water and proprietary minerals known as Electrolyzed Water on demand. Our one-step, multipurpose products offer safe and sustainable cleaning, sanitizing, and degreasing solutions…in accordance with AOAC protocol and GLP procedures confirm that GenEon’s solution kills 99.999% of common germs in less than 60 seconds. This includes Listeria, MRSA, Staph, VRE, Pseudomonas, Norovirus, H1N1, Salmonella, and E.coli O157:H7 bacteria.’ (not convincing to me so far).
This is their explanation of how it works and what I hope someone who knows more science than I do can tell me if it is possibly true. ‘Our products are made using nothing more than water, natural minerals, and electricity. It’s electrochemical activation (ECA). Simply put, one of the natural minerals that GenEon uses as a catalyst is salt, which is a compound comprised of sodium and chloride. During this process, sodium ions are positively charged and chloride ions are negatively charged. Our onsite generators expose these ions to a low electrical charge. The positive side of the charge electrochemically converts the chloride ion (Cl) to hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which is a powerful sanitizer, and the negative side of the charge electrochemically converts the sodium ion (Na) into sodium hydroxide (NaOH), which is a cleaning compound often found in soaps and detergents. Unlike many other OSG systems, our system is a Blended Stream System that uses both versions in the same solution. The hypochlorous solution is represented as Free Available Chlorine (FAC) that has 80-200 times the sanitizing power of chlorine bleach. Since it is produced at a near neutral pH, it won’t bleach out furniture or clothes.’
Again, does not sound convincing to me. I worry the place I work will rely on this and not on effective measures to prevent the virus to spread.
Are Florida and Texas still adding positive virus test results with positive antibody test results? I find this very dismaying. Why confuse the issue? It’s bad that AZ does this too but at least you can tease the numbers apart apparently. Sigh…
I follow a local statistician on Twitter and he’s putting out charts every day and he’s very frustrated. Apparently, the curve of the infection matters just as much as how high the numbers are. Some curves are getting worse, but how can we tell for sure?
Other graphs stopped in late April/early May. This one is current, and does show that it appears, thankfully, in recent days COVID has dropped to the 3rd leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer. Sort of feels like a mixed blessing…
People in my corner of the NYC suburbs are desperate to reconnect. There were two dance recitals and a backyard music jam. Most people wore masks, though some are laughably inadequate. Most people kept their distance. I feel terrible when I step back as friends step closer to talk. Really I can hear you just fine!
As to the thread, I have a pretty high tolerance for snark. I like to hear people I violently disagree with in small doses. This thread is just about the right dose!
I expect all states numbers will get worse, it is just a question of when. As states open, there will be more mobility and more contagion, since we are not near herd immunity nor close to a vaccine. When the NYC subway resumes 8 million riders per day, there will be spikes there too, whether that is in October 2020 or January 2021 or June 2021. The virus does not just go away on its own.
I think some people just unintentionally forget. After a lifetime of not having to worry about the physical distancing, it’s easy to get lost in the moment and revert to old patterns . A gentle or humorous reminder isn’t out of place, IMO.
I was walking the other day and saw a woman I haven’t seen in years. We were friendly but not friends. We didn’t know it was her from a distance and obviously moved to the other side of the street to avoid her. She recognized us and made a b-line for me. I moved back and she continued. She was going to hug me!!! I had to put my hand out and say, “We are staying back from others. I’m immune deficient.” She didn’t have a mask. we normally don’t wear them when walking as we almost never see anyone and never stop to talk. She wanted to talk! She kept coming close and closer. It was so uncomfortable. We cut the talk short and walked home. She’s a nurse! She is concerned with the virus but was still going to hug me. And I don’t think she particularly likes me so much as was happy to see people, you know? Like me so much, call me sometime in the past 8 years!! (she has not) Don’t hug me during a pandemic!! Anway, maybe you are right, doschicos, that it was just her forgetting things. Who knows.
I had lunch with D and SIL again this past Sunday. My daughter went in for a hug before she forgot. No. Can’t do that. We had a chuckle about it because it is an automatic response.
I just think it’s interesting that, when anyone posts something that might be positive news like the Eli Lilly therapeutic, posters either ignore it or pick holes in it. It’s like no one wants to be optimistic. I’m afraid that, if we get any good news, it will be dismissed as untrue somehow.
This isn’t a political issue. There shouldn’t be sides. Weirdly enough, I’m pretty darn liberal but I find I can’t even watch my favorite commentators on tv anymore because they seem to just want to show the one 18 year old who ended up in the hospital. We don’t need anecdotes that scare people now. We need a real testing plan and people who know how to analyze the data. And then we all need to have faith in what they tell us. This is such a giant mess.
Why do all of my doctor friends actually feel better about all of this as time goes on but most people here are so gloom and doom? They said they’ve got PPE. Testing is getting better. The virus is here and we have to live with it until there are better therapies and/or a vaccine. None of them think that the vast majority need to SIP. And they all think K-12 and college kids should absolutely go back even though they admit none of those students will follow the rules 100 percent. It’s worth the risk for most of us in order to save our mental health and the economy.
I vote for keeping the thread open. I can skip the snark and practice “take what I like and leave the rest”.
I see people in my circle loosening up but still taking precautions with wearing masks when in a group and social distancing. I don’t know many who are dining in but more are getting together with small groups of friends. My His back playing beach volleyball with the same group of guys. The nets aren’t up but one of the guys brings his own. The city summer volleyball camp for kids starts at the end of the month. I think I’ve heard it will require the same kids on each court with the same coach for the entire week. Also no end of the week tournaments. My H also much to my dismay had lunch out with his parents. They really wanted to and he does what they want. Tables on an outside patio spaced out, one paper menu per table.
Teeth cleaning- hygienist meets you in the parking lot, takes temperature and has you answer some questions. Hand sanitizer and masks to enter. Mouth wash rinse. The hygienist has plenty of protective gear on. They had the windows open in the room to get air flowing. They aren’t using the ultrasound. Plexiglass at the reception desk. I felt comfortable with the whole thing.
Gyms are allowed to open as of Friday. Have not heard yet when mine is planning on opening.
This graph seems to be missing the real leading causes of global deaths. TB and HIV, sadly, are still here and kill 2-4 million a year globally (if not more). Close to a quarter of the world’s population has been/is infected with Mtb. Due to Covid, the funding for programs directed TB education and treatment has dried out. Just wait for the next wave… it will be infectious diseases neglected due to Covid.
I’m not on this thread all the time so maybe I’m missing a lot of the snark, but I haven’t seen enough to warrant closing the thread. If it’s bothering people, they could avoid the thread.

I am reposting this because The quote box messes up and because there still are interesting/helpful posts in this thread if one ignores the irrelevant side comments that seem to serve little purpose other than to inflame, pseudo moderate Or hijack the conversation.
Texas reports 2,504 new cases of COVID-19 across the state. For the third straight day in a row, Texas reported a record number of hospitalizations at 2,153.
