US Surgeon General: Face coverings bring more freedom, not less

The US Surgeon General on Sunday pushed back on the idea that face coverings infringe on freedoms – and said they’re important to slow the spread of coronavirus and reopen the economy.
“Some feel face coverings infringe on their freedom of choice — but if more wear them, we’ll have MORE freedom to go out,” Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said in a tweet today.
He said face coverings lead to less asymptomatic spread of the virus, which leads to more places opening sooner.
“Exercise and promote your freedom by choosing to wear a face covering!” Adams said in the tweet, which also included a photo of him in a mask.
What this is about: Public health officials have emphasized the importance of face coverings amid the country’s reopening, given that people without symptoms could unknowingly transmit Covid-19. The coverings are primarily to prevent people with the virus from infecting others.
Earlier guidance from US officials didn’t recommend widespread masking, but in April, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended face coverings for the general public in places where social distancing is difficult to maintain, like grocery stores.
At the time, CDC cited growing evidence that people could spread coronavirus without feeling sick.

GOP official says there is no plan for social distancing at Trump rally

Trump campaign and Tulsa GOP officials say more than 300,000 people have expressed interest in attending President Trump’s rally in Tulsa. Since the rally site, the Bank of Oklahoma Center, only holds around 20,000 people, there are currently discussions about whether they will add a second event, the campaign and one official said.
As for the potential of massive crowds gathering in a city that is in the middle of a coronavirus spike, there are currently no plans to practice social distancing at the rally according to one GOP official.
The campaign has not responded to numerous requests for comment regarding what precautions it will take at the rally because of Covid-19.
The campaign and local organizers plan on the event being held in a packed arena. The GOP official told CNN that there were ongoing discussions among organizers and the campaign as to what precautions, if any, will be put place, including possible temperature scans for supporters before they’re allowed inside the arena. This official said a temperature check is consistent with what many businesses in the state are doing as they reopen. With the caveat that the plans are not finalized, the official told CNN that as of now masks would be optional, and noted that the President himself doesn’t like wearing a mask and it’s up to individuals to decide.
Sen. James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday he was planning on attending the rally. When Jake asked Lankford if he was going to wear a mask, he responded that he had not decided yet.

The venue President Trump is slated to hold his first rally at since states began reopening has canceled or postponed all other events until at least the end of July due to COVID-19 concerns according to its website.
The BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. has a web page listing the 17 events cancelled or postponed “out of an abundance of caution.”
Some events originally scheduled for this summer have been rescheduled to more than a year later.
The Associated Press first reported on the BOK Center’s event scheduling moves.

So, ppl are locking on to SC, AZ, and FL with increased cases. The difference? FL does not have increased positivity (3.9% now and 2 weeks ago) . SC 3.9->27.5 and AZ 8.1->15.9. Translation. SC and AZ trending very poorly, FL not so much. Not great, but not so poorly.
@rosered55 , I mostly agree with the Dave Blake tweet, but Florida’s percent positivity has been a little high for my liking over the last five days. Percent of Positive Results has averaged 7.12% and Percent Positivity for New Cases has averaged 5.32% for the last five days. I find this uptick to be a concern, but I do agree that the Florida numbers are not great, but not dire.

I agree that SC and AZ are looking much more dire than Florida.
I’m surprised that these two numbers are so different. This is saying that once you test positive, they keep testing you frequently, maybe to see when you turn negative again, so that a substantial fraction (roughly 2/7 in this case) of positives are people who were already known to be positive.
But if that’s true for Florida, it’s true for other states too, and if you want to compare Florida to other states, then the 7.12% number is the one to use.

Went to the shore today, rented kayaks and spent the afternoon paddling. On our way home we stopped at a market for some pre-dinner appies. Was the first place where both masks and gloves were required. They provided the gloves so all was fine. Surprised but happy to oblige.
It kind of floors me that “we” (even here on CC) can not imagine how kids will get back to school and how it could possibly be safe for all involved - not to mention the multitude of problems of how we will house, teach, prepare, plan, motivate those students and make their parents comfortable with the plan…YET in many towns, cities and states ADULTS have thrown COVID to the wind and are engaging in activities that do NOT include social distancing, using PPE, etc.
Where are our priorities? Maybe adults can WFH, but online schooling for primary school children is not going to work. It’s not going to work for working parents. ADULT actions are putting children’s learning at huge risk.
So do you think if they had late March/April in the R chart we would see it move from over 1 to ~ .8?

Meaning, so many people need to work! Retail & hospitality come immediately to mind.
For example, our entire combined household income depends on people being willing to not only order carry out & delivery from a restaurant, but come in & eat in person.
I was paying a seafood vendor this week, and was very happy the woman in AR who handles our account was back at work after being laid off. Yay!

I don’t disagree about people getting to work. The economy and all that goes with it.
People can work and get needed supplies, get a restaurant meal - and if they want this, they can abide by the rules that led many states to lowering COVID.

Pick your top 3 or 5 things that need to happen in society. Please tell me that educating children in a way that is most conducive to developmental milestones, learning differences and socio emotional growth is one of them.
It can be helpful not to consider whole states. I have relatives in Collier County FL and there the numbers are looking grim. They are older relatives, so would be in a high risk group for both age and other health conditions.

Ditto for other states. The virus doesn’t really care about a man-made border.
Numbers for my state of Maryland looking better again today. Positivity rate fell another 0.05%. Hospitalizations down another 48 to just 751. About half the number of usual positive cases confirmed today. All good news.
State feeling more open every day. Hopefully we can keep these positive trends going. Either way it seems we are not yet seeing any negative effects from opening starting a month ago.
