One of the problems with cruises and other things is the people often plan and pay up to 2 years prior, so have a lot invested in going so it takes a whole lot to get them NOT to go. They don’t want to lose the $$$$ they’ve put into it.
Major cruise lines have already stopped new cruises from starting, but some cruises were underway at the time and must still find a place to disembark passengers.
The last time I went to the grocery store, @Knowsstuff, I noticed the huge display of Spotted Cow.
@JustaMom5465 I can’t say I know someone personally who tested positive because there are not enough kits and she seems to be deemed a lower priority - My daughter has had sore throat, fever, dry cough, and nausea. Odds are good she has it. Her work wants her to stay home for 2 weeks.
She works with tourists from around the globe and likely caught it from one of them.
But not enough tests means the young and doing ok at home crowd won’t get tested where she is.
The one closest to us (Walter Anderson) is open.
Someone has tested positive from the University I work at, and at least four people from my town. So, not personal, yet, but pretty darn close.
Welp, the university department for whom I work has instructed us to “begin shutting down” our research…which means (for me) stopping all lab work and storing chemicals and intermediates for the long-term. When asked, I was told to assume we would be shut down for 6-8 weeks… at least…
Local food co-op is instituting early shopping for over 60 or at risk customers. Also curbside pickup only for those over 60 or at risk. You phone the store, place your order, they phone you back, talk about your order, take credit card number over the phone and hold your order up to 24 hours, you get there, phone the store, they bring it out. Cludgy and old-school but responsive.
Our local Whole Foods was well stocked this morning. They are instituting senior only shopping times, cut back on staff, and reduced their hours so they can better clean. There was a staff member cleaning down carts before and after customer contact. There is a limit of how much you can buy of things like bread, eggs, milk, juice, and TP. One of the checkout clerks told me they are also staggering when they put out their daily shipment to discourage hoarding. It was the first day in over a week that I was able to find every single item on my shopping list.
Our Ohio Governor just ordered all beauty salons, nail, tattoo places closed.
My coworker posted the following on Facebook:
“I did NOT know I had nerves that deep in my nose!” - My son, on getting his Covid-19 test.
3-5 days for results - likely Sunday or Monday.
Also on Facebook, from a friend of the coworker (above):
My daughter had a lady come in to her salon for a haircut/style. [D] was almost done when the woman told her that she had just been diagnosed and was on her way home to quarantine herself!! Her name was just announced as the first confirmed case of the virus in LaCrosse! Guess who will be quarantined for the foreseeable future! What the hell is wrong with people?
Admittedly a degree of separation, but my Seattle area ED doc kid has diagnosed quite a few cases. So I know someone who knows people who tested positive.
I went to grocery store for first time in over a week. It is surreal to see aisles and aisles of empty shelves. Meat department completely empty except for rib eye steaks. Have no idea why rib eye steaks are the only thing left unless they had a big side of beef in the back they just cut up??
Have never seen this in my lifetime. Probably similar to the rationing situation during World War II
Palm Springs just went into mandatory lockdown similar to San Francisco. A Rancho Mirage nursing home became a hot bed of virus.
I thought this was well written and quite useful. Our parents are deceased, but they would have fallen into the only listening to peers category. We are in our 60s and luckily following the suggestions. It helps that we live in a rural area and can easily get out in nature and still be alone.
My husband is so sweet. My cleaning lady came (just 1) and she told me everyone else has cancelled her and she was crying. He overheard it from upstairs and he texted me from his office “ask her how much a month for her rent”. Then he signed a check for 3 months and told me to give it to her.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the restaurant supply chain (e.g. Sysco, US Foods, etc.) is well stocked, possibly with food that may go bad, due to greatly reduced orders from restaurants who have closed or are seeing much reduced business.
https://www.ers.usda.gov/webdocs/publications/90228/eib-196.pdf says that FAFH (food away from home) made up about a third of calorie consumption in the US. If most of that is suddenly shifted toward food prepared at home, that will significantly imbalance the restaurant versus grocery store supply chains, even without excessive consumer hoarding.
In our state (WA) - no. Not sure about Home Depot or other hardware stores.
Locally, a lot of restaurants donated their raw materials food to the food banks.
