Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

@doschicos not many, but some. And people posting every five minutes is anxiety inducing even though I understand the premise is to just keep people up to date.

I agree @homerdog. I personally like a bit of humor but @doschicos thread is really a minute to minute update and I appreciate the work that goes into that.

Now to my meet up and not shaking hands. ?

@doschicos Want you to know I appreciate the work you are putting into that thread. For some, it’s important I’m sure.

@homerdog I know you said it as a joke. But that was kinda true. There weren’t too many people on the plane and at the airport. Just in case tho, I had my Clorox wipe to wipe down my seat and seat belt. I am still wait for the air fare to go down. It hasn’t happened yet.

Just getting caught up, but for people who are talking about licking - or, I can barely even type this it’s soooo gross - spitting!?! - on their fingers to get bags in a grocery store separated… hopefully you are joking. It’s disgusting enough when there’s not a pandemic, but right now, it’s just irresponsible to lick or spit on your hands and touch things that other people will touch. Please don’t lick your fingers and touch money, bags, library book pages, whatever. Gak.

Some humor. Seattle Freeze to the rescue!

FWIW, I had already ripped the bag off the roll and was trying to open the bag I had ripped off so I could put my chicken inside it. I didn’t lick my finger and then touch the roll. I don’t make a habit of doing this but I could not get the bag open after several attempts. And don’t worry, no one was touching my money or any of my purchases - I use the Sam’s Club app to check out and pay for my purchases.

Do you make a habit of washing your hands after eating a meal with your hands at a public restaurant? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do that at a fast food restaurant. But yet, then they touch the door with the hands they were just using to eat their French fries.

Doesn’t make it any better that you already ripped the bag off. That bag goes into the cart which we all use, goes onto the belt we all put our groceries on, gets touched by that poor, unwitting cashier…

Not only that, but now your saliva is on your hands, which you’re using to steer the cart, touch produce and touch the touchscreen to pay, so you’ve now smeared your spit on all these common things which again the rest of us use.

It’s gross. Stop, please.

I don’t lick my fingers when I eat - that’s not just gross, it’s rude. Again, if you’re doing this in public, please stop. The rest of us don’t want to touch all the things you’ve just spit on.

Oh geez. I’m with you @4kids4us . I don’t see a problem. We can make ourselves crazy (which is currently happening) if we stop to think about all the stuff we do and touch all day long.

To be honest, there are many of us who don’t care. Germs are all around us. In most instances, the more we fight off, the better our immune system is. Some germs are even beneficial.

If we insist folks don’t eat with their fingers then we eliminate many chicken dishes, BBQ dishes, sandwiches, burgers, sides, appetizers, etc, etc, etc. A few places supply wet wipes when the food is super greasy, but most times it’s just napkins. Even for those who wash their hands when they’re done, they still need to open the door to get to the restroom, etc.

Then there are the other countries, some of which don’t have silverware aside from perhaps spoons for soup. There can even be group plates where everyone eats from the same plate.

For those it does bother, I imagine it’s best staying home?

If one is in an area with Covid or a bit of the flu going around it’s probably better to be more diligent, but I know I was at school today helping kids with basic common colds, so I suspect - as usual - I have a bit more in my system today than I’d ever get from someone licking a bag that only they used.

I will be using a Cold Eeze tonight - tends to be usual for me when in the close proximity of someone with a bad cold - meaning it happens often on work nights. It may or may not work, but I very rarely get colds so I’m not stopping.

“Dance Marathon at Northwestern was cancelled. Like what?? Those kids are in class together, in the dorms together, eating together, partying together…why cancel an event that kids have worked tirelessly planning?”
I agree, @homerdog , that it seems illogical to cancel one particular event when classes are still going on and they’re all in the dorms and eating together. And presumably this is not an event that would be attracted people from all over the world to mix and mingle their germs from far off places.
I am concerned that all these cancellations are just going to make everything else (especially the economy) worse but we are still all going to be exposed to the virus anyway.

People are just so gross!.. that’s why I surround myself with cats… they are the cleanest animals, constantly washing themselves. Oh wait. Cats lick their butts. Ewwww… back to people.

I fly to LA tomorrow and back on Friday. And we just booked a trip to Seattle in April. And (as fellow parents, I have to say I LOVE this), my 3 kids booked a trip to Jamaica together in April and invited dh and me. Quite the role-reversal – I believe they have all grown up! Dh can’t go but I am so that’s 6 flights (8, actually, since I have to change planes to get to Montego Bay) in the next 7 weeks or so. No, not really changing much here.

OK, one thing. I’ve never paid attention to how often I touch my face. Now that it’s been brought up, I’m noticing I do quite a bit. So, I’m trying to tune in more and reduce it because, well, it seems like we shouldn’t be touching our face all the time for a whole host of reasons.

Yeah, really.

@milee30 i didn’t touch any touch screen. Nor did I touch any produce, or anything else. I went in, got my cart, went to pick up a package of chicken wings b/c it was my son’s birthday and that’s what he wanted. Before picking it up, I ripped off a plastic bag, couldn’t open it, so quick dabbed my forefinger to my tongue and opened the bag THAT NO ONE ELSE touched after me. I then picked up a multipack of paper towels, scanned my two items with the app, showed my phone at the exit, which the worker scanned without ever touching my phone and left.

But if people are that worried about germs, they might consider hibernating at home during flu season, etc. Or maybe all the time. I can’t recall if it was this thread or another, but I recall reading a man noticing how few men wash their hands after using the men’s room.

I don’t lick my fingers when eating out, but do you really think people eating fresh fries and other finger foods with their fingers aren’t getting germs from their mouth onto their hands? And then go to pick up straws out of the dispenser, or more ketchup from the communal condiment area?

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to worry about such things. Instead I do my best. But you know, I wasnt able to buy any hand sanitizer b/c panic has set in and there isn’t any to be found anywhere, locally or online, so I was unable to sanitize my finger. I had to decide what was more important - raw chicken possibly leaking in my cart and car, or the off chance that my forefinger might accidentally touch the cart. The same finger that touched the car key in my car that the guy at the emissions station touched with his germy hands after touching who knows how many other car keys before mine?

I paid I full last year for a trip with my husband to Italy this july for his 60th bday. I have until the end of April to get much of my money backfired I cancel. I haven’t decided what I will do, but sad we are All having to worry about stuff like this.

I live in Seattle the things I have observed have been quite varied. My daughter is going to attend the state wide DECA competition for three days beginning tomorrow. There will be 4,000 students from around the state together at a hotel in the suburbs where the outbreak has been. The leader told me that they will be discussing with kids that they should forgo shaking hands and they will change a few things so that kids are in smaller groups when waiting for events. But the school district has canceled all out of state trips for the rest of the year, including trips that had already been paid for and booked. The district has also indicated that if there is a confirmed case at any school, they will close the school.

Here many of the grocery stores shelves are quite bare, people are being told to work remotely if possible and those over 60 stay home as well. I’m not to concerned for myself or kids and much as I am about potentially spreading to others if I were to get it. They estimate it had been spreading in the area for 6 weeks before it was detected, meaning many people didn’t realize they had it. This is probably the most worrisome detail, I think, regarding efforts to contain the spread.

I’m worried because I already have very low lung function, H is nearly 80, mom (whom we help care for) is 90 and lives in a CCRC, both my
my kids and H have sone chronic health issues and asthma. Other than that, I suspect for most people, it’s not that big a deal.

I‘m very concerned about the upcoming funeral for my dad where maybe 1000+ may attend, many of whom may be older.

Despite diligent efforts, I’m having trouble obtaining hand sanitizer for the funeral. I placed an order that supposedly was in progress and just now got a notice it was canceled, due to lack of supply.

We are also attending a wedding in April. No idea if they’re doing anything in particular about COVID-19. Many MDs will be attending.

When very ill dad was in the hospitalizado Feb, only my sister who was recovering from an infection wore a mask.

I see what you did there, Rich. Well played!

My D who hates cats just informed me that they give everyone who’s around them a parasite that makes them like the cats. Which she is appalled by. The science of that is still out. But I just thought I’d add this here for you.

So on the “El” train in Chicago now. Don’t think anyone cares personally… Lol… At the meeting no Purell but cool AR /VR tech and how it’s used in training… Lol…

No off to eat at a restaurant… It’s the best Thai in the city and they have like 10 levels of hotness. That should kill the bug… ?.

I am taking a Zinc louzenger before I left and when I get home. Not sure it will do anything but it’s Cherry so not so bad ?.
