Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

I agree with you. Kids at school with health issues sometimes need to take special precautions. However, I assume the OP knows if their kids are in this situation.

I asked our future host in Germany about reactions from the virus there since she’s the first stop on our potential upcoming trip. Here’s what she wrote:

"With corona people around here are unsure how to deal with. Official information is best provided by the RKI, our public health institute (https://www.rki.de/EN/Home/homepage_node.html). The last two weeks shelves in supermarkets had to be refilled fast as people were buying food in case they would be ordered to not leave their house for 2 weeks. Sanitizers and protective masks are sold like never before… But otherwise people go along their usual business, go to work, school etc. They have canceled all major international trade fairs and some of the big music concerts. There has been a bigger breakout of the virus in a city 75 km away from us as one person infected returning from Italy attended a carnival party with around 400 people. Over there schools etc. are closed.

Last week I got a cold with coughing and fever and at work everybody got very interested. But otherwise most people here think that they can not stop normal life for this uncertainty. That’s what they say. One the other side, I read articles of restaurants in our city of having 25% less visitors. Travel sector is not doing to well and economy is slowing down due to expected shortage in logistic chains from china etc

At work, we can decide whether we want to work at home office or at the office. We are not allowed to do business trips to Asia and Italy and they have put sanitizing stations every other corner… But people are still using public transport (as I do as well) as usual."

To me it seems there’s not much different going on with the “average person” in Germany than there is where I live. Both of us are wondering if we’ll get to go or if we’ll have to plan the trip for later. We’re leaving it “on” for now and will decide in April unless one of our gov’ts decides for us.

At church this morning attendance was probably 75% of normal. I have to wonder how much of that was the clock change and how much was illness related. I only heard one sneeze during the whole service. It’s usually relatively common. Hopefully those who are sick with anything are staying home. We have a lot of older and elderly folks at church.

My local grocery delivery has a 3-day wait for time slots right now. I think meeting demand would be the biggest hurdle if things get widespread. It’s far from totally empty at the stores, however.

That’s a good point. Deliveries will get worse if more people are quarantined. I’d better go out and get some soup. After following the thread, I feel like I am coming down with something. I never get a cold much less a flu. Could it be COVID-19?

I will give you another one to LOL, paper money.

If you put pure alcohol on certain things, it can dissolve the dyes in them (book covers can be damaged in that way). If you spray aqueous alcohol on book pages, the pages will get wet and wrinkle upon drying.

Yup- I am already doing more online shopping. This could get dangerous if I am cooped up!

I have always ordered grocery online in NYC. I could usually get next day delivery. Today with my order the first available time is on Wed.
I think more people are avoiding crowded places, especially older people.

My school is making plans on how to teach from home if necessary. Costco and local supermarkets are out of water and hand sanitizer, and there is a 2 limit purchase per person for toilet paper.

As for me personally…I have done nothing out of the ordinary.

I just got back from the (crowded) grocery store. There weren’t any paper towels, or hand sanitizers, but the rest of the store was well stocked. I was buying ingredients to make Minestrone for Dummies sometime this week…when the temps get cooler again.

It’s supposed to be 65 here tomorrow. I’m planning on opening all my windows!

Oh, another thing I’m doing is taking the stairs instead of the elevator more often, especially during peak times. I live in an apartment building with lots of elderly people who don’t have that option. More room for them, glute workout for me.

My mom’s CCRC just posted a notice that they are restricting entry to two entrances (there were many more).

Visitors are restricted to family only and mandatory temp checks for everyone effective Monday.

I am glad—our hospitals were doing similar in February most days. The hospital also offered masks for visitors and people were responsible about using them.

My mom’s assisted living in Central NJ is currently in week 4 of quarantine. Large outbreak of Influenza A - entire building had their flu shots previously so this strain must not have been targeted. Its scary and upsetting for us but must be more so for the elderly. My mom is 89 and has some dementia. She doesn’t have a phone due to her confusion with technology. I am hoping the quarantine gets lifted this week.

For those trying to convince family members not to take a cruise, maybe this will help:

State Department warns against travel by cruise ship

"The U.S. State Department has advised all Americans, especially those with underlying health conditions, to avoid travel by cruise ship. The announcement comes after 21 passengers and crew members aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship, owned by Carnival’s Princess Cruises, tested positive for COVID-19. Passengers will disembark Monday at the port of Oakland, California officials said in a statement, and all passengers will face a 14-day quarantine on a variety of military bases. California officials added that the nearly 1,000 crew members on the ship will be quarantined on the ship, and not allowed to disembark. " (CNBC)

So in suburb of Detroit. Oak Park /Berkeley area No hand sanitizer or Zinc tablets but everything everything else.

Staying with my 90 mother and saw my sisters and nephew today. No one hugged or kissed. Joked about it.

On the brighter side… Tomorrow going to Zeimans bakery for Hamantash… Yum…?

@Knowsstuff another suburb of Detroit here. Same issues. My mom went to go grab cough suppressant for Mr from cvs and there was only one left.

Fwiw Kroger seems to have some sometimes. You can check their website and do curbside pickup even lol. They’re rationing.

@romanigypsyeyes How is Mr R doing? Did they diagnose anything?

I was at a family Bat Mitzvah last night and there was practically no one practicing recommended controls. Kissing and hugging all night long. I was one of the only ones saying no. it was a large bat mitzvah and in Fairfield County (neighboring county to Westchester County NY ) and where everyone knows about the outbreak stemming from Bat Mitzvah in New Rochelle.

I was pleasantly surprised when we checked into our hotel (a Hilton Garden Inn.) and they had two large bottles of Purcell at the front desk and a station in lobby with wipes.

I assume these are recent additions.

Our front page of the local newspaper showed a 1000 plus funeral for a police office killed in the live of duty that was held at the Hawaiian school he had attended. No one is wearing masks or any virus protective gear in photos. Shows photos of the police lining both sides of major roadway in respect.

Are those 1000 plus people elderly or do they have compromised lung issues? @himom?

Betting folks with those issues stayed home.

@maya54 Nothing yet. He got in there about 45 minutes ago. Urgent care is PACKED and several people have left. Then someone had a seizure (I think) out front of the restaurant next door and the doctors ran out to assist that person. So I’m home now waiting for word to go get him. Luckily we live less than 10 minutes from the clinic.
