@thumper1 — I agree with you and always have on this, but my brother and other family members will insist that this shows no problem with large funerals.
I volunteer at a large Cat shelter on the weekends. WE rely on hand sanitizer as one goes from room to room to visit with the cats. Currently we have it, but I worry that we wont be able to get it in the future . hopefully none of the volunteers are stealing it.
Mr r update: negative for flu. Doc said just a virus that needs to run its course.
No testing for covid and no real screening questions either. Just gave him a cough suppressant and said to stay home until 24 hours after fever.
I don’t think he has it but it still doesn’t inspire confidence.
My husband has a group of four Nevada grad students in Vietnam. They were supposed to start their physician assistant internships tomorrow. They had clearance from the US embassy and the university hospital in which they were to intern – but now the university has barred these students due to “the chaos with the corona virus” in America!
As a free and open society, highly visited and extremely mobile population it is going to be more challenging. I’ll take it in the long run personally. We do need a vaccine and the 4mm test kits to get out there ASAP.
Also banning cruise ships (give the us based lines a line of credit or short term tax break or something to protect USA employees and industry) and more countries from entry and visitation abroad too.
Went to the store this morning. Here in the Milwaukee area you can’t get hand sanitizer and I noticed the zinc pills were running low. Cold/flu medications in stock but lower stock than normal. I noticed the shelves of baby/children medication were almost empty. Feel badly for families who little ones get sick these days since it seems hard to get OTC meds for them in many places.
Other than that I think maybe some shelves were a little more bare than others (toilet paper, cheap pasta, etc) but nothing shocking.
We have enough toliet paper, medication, paper towels, and cleaning supplies if we end up needing to stay in for a couple of weeks. We bought some extra non-perishables today but haven’t gone overboard.
My D says after the initial minor panic after a staff member at her school was diagnosed last week things have calmed down. Not sure she or her friends are changing their habits much except for (hopefully) washing their hands more. She flies home next Friday and we instructed her to wipe down anything around her seat that she might touch and assured her she would not be the only person doing do. Also told her if the person sitting next to her is coughing or seems sick to ask to move. Our last piece of advice was to bring home any school work she’ll need it they end up moving classes online and she’s home longer than planned.
I don’t know. I was the only one doing it last week when I flew. I felt a bit awkward.
@romanigypsyeyes… Nope. Went to Meyers and a few others but it’s my son’s birthday tomorrow and when I take him to lunch before heading back he will get some Sanders bumpy cake !!!
Plenty of folks were doing this on our recent flights to HI and CO. The ones who were not doing any wiping simply did not have the supplies. We shared ours with our coach seatmate.
I didn’t have a seat mate. The plane was empty. I got my own row.
My mom wipes down seats and trays before she sits down. Has for years. I’ve never noticed if anyone looks at her funny for being the only one to do it. Even if they did and she noticed, she wouldn’t care.
H usually balks when I remind him to wash his hands. Not this week. We babysat our grandchild and I noticed that he not only washed his hands multiple times but also used hand sanitizer before handling bottles and pacifiers. He hasn’t been this careful since one of our kids first experienced a compromised immune system due to chemotherapy over a decade ago.
The other grandpa travels extensively for work. He’s visiting the grandbaby this weekend, which worries me a bit.
I ran errands early this morning and didn’t see any shortages. Some joker made a crack about the (one) package of TP in my cart. I just gave him a puzzled look and he sheepishly smiled before moving on. The second store I went to had no wipes by their carts, but I keep a carton in my car year round so wasn’t too bothered.
H and I are over 60. He’s diabetic and we both have hypertension along with several other issues. We’re not concerned for ourselves but are a bit worried about some medically fragile relatives as well as several who work in health care. So far, no cases have been confirmed in any of the cities where they live.
Don’t feel awkward, anyone with two brain cells understands. If anything, they’re just wishing they had wipes, too. I started doing the seat/belt/tray wiping years ago when my boys were little. We traveled often and like all little kids, they touched everything. So I started bringing wipes and wiping the whole area each time we flew and it did coincide with a reduction in the number of times one of us got sick when we flew. If anything, people who noticed commented on what a good idea it is. People get it, especially now.
Scams to watch out for

I have one adult child at Stanford and one in New York City. They said they won’t visit me (in the Midwest) because even though they’re not likely to get sick, they might spread the virus to “old people” like me. They’re right, but I do feel a little sad about this. Otherwise, I’m not worried about myself.
DH and I went to an open house this afternoon, and the realtor didn’t understand why we didn’t want to shake hands with him.
We’ve got some hand sanitizer, but couldn’t find more or any wipes. We do have disinfectant spray to use at home.
They suspect transmissions happened through paper forms passengers filled out in Diamond cruise.
@Iglooo who is “they”? And can you please cite your source for your statement about how long COVID-19 stays alive on paper?
I’m going to an event at the mall tonight where local restaurants prepare food and you walk around and get small plates and drinks. It’s a United Way thing and is usually very well attended (i.e. crowded). It will be interesting to see if people decide not to go (prepaid tickets) and what precautions there might be. Our area only has one confirmed case so far and the guy didn’t even infect his own family.
All of our local base schools are closing through Wednesday to sanitize. That’s quite the disruption for a military base.
I went to a meeting with about 20 other professionals today. We were discussing how to help clients with panic, anxiety, OCD and discussed making appropriate precautions for those who do come into the office, and discussed HIPAA compliant alternative options (telesessions, etc). One person, who tends to be an “outlier” in several ways, proceeded to minimize the need for taking any extra precautions and said he was going to continue to shake hands, etc. and said there was was no need for sanitizer in the waiting room (never mind putting patients at ease). He then proceeded to describe some things of very questionable ethics and potential fraudulent billing. The room was silent. Everyone was aghast.
